For those looking to use the Rodecaster Duo/Pro for their gaming livestream setup, this video runs through how to set up routing on the Rodecaster Duo, set up channels for a single PC setup, and input those sources into OBS with independent physical sliders for Mic, Noises, Music & Games/System.
I am by no means an expert with this device, this is just how I have been able to set it up and how I have been able to get it to work for my own purposes. Whilst this is a single PC livestream setup, it can be adapted to work for dual PC. If you have any questions, feel free to ask them in comments and I will do my best to help where I can!

Great job dissecting it and figuring out everything that a noob might needs to know. starting at the beginning and following the road with all of the pot holes that happened. Gives a more realistic set up process then all of these people making reviews but not understanding that there's lots of people that have never dealt with routing before. and might need a step by step understanding.

For mix minus, I realised most people without some sort of audio background just stuggle with the "mix" notion. Once they get it clear, they tend to handle it fine. A mix is just all your inputs (audio source) all together.Then you use your Mix to output it somewhere. So the "outputs" page is this: I select the output at the top, and I select what I want to go there at the bottom (the mix) . The reason for Mix Minus is because some "inputs" are also "outputs", so you want to tell the mixer, for this output I selected, take everything in, but ITSELF. This is enough in most scenarios, to prevent your listeners to hear themselves (echo). Custom is relevant when you want to use more complexe setup with two chats/applications and you don't want to get everyone in the sauce

OBS Tip: Create a scene for all your audio sources and just nest that scene into all your other scenes. Saves you the work of adding them to each scene and avoids the risk of OBS breaking.

I spent a few days talking with Rode Tech Support and connecting with their Community manager. The main difference, and the thought process you need to adjust, is this is a true mixer, whereas the GoXLR, Wave XLR and Presonus io24 etc, are interfaces with mixing capability. There's a fundemental difference in they way they are designed to work. With what most streamers are used to, you set audio up in OBS to use desktop audio and desktop audio 2 for the outputs available in your Windows audio channels, and the Mic into the Mic/Aux input. There is complete separation between the input and output in Windows, and you use OBS to mix into your 6 available channels. With the Rodcaster pro II/Duo, all mixing is designed on a different principle to work as a standard mixer, where all mixing takes place on the device, and you use a single input into OBS...your Duo Main Stereo/Multicast into the Mic/Aux in OBS and you disable Desktop Audio and Desktop Audio 2. All mixing, submixes, etc, takes place on the device with that single input coming into your computer and into OBS. If you set it up the way you would a GoXLR, you end up with looping audio across channels between the Main and the Chat going into your Mic in OBS due to the way the sound is going from the computer, to the Duo (where it is mixed) and then is sent back to the computer. If you use the desktop 1 and 2 outputs in OBS it just loops the sound back again. There is a way, just with custom routing, to disable all the individual outputs for each of the USB 1, Chat and USB 2 which allows you to use OBS the way you're used to, but this will remove most of the mixing capability of the Duo, and you will use OBS for your mixing (and you can still assign the sliders to whatever you want and control your sound with them). To use the device as designed, and have the full mixing capaobilites on board it, You just have to think about it in a different way...like a sound person, not a streaming person. Everything comes in to a single channel, and if you want multitrack recording in OBS, you will need to use the Rode ASIO driver and the Asio for OBS plug in for multi channel recording in the 6 channels in OBS so you can work with them when editing in post. This will keep all processing on the Duo, and you will route to your OBS channels using Asio Inputs rather than the Desktop Audio. Small note: According to Rode, their Asio driver will need exclusive access to the USB1 Main device, so if it happens to be in use in a different program, it won't be able to run or take access for itself. If you select DuoChat or USB2 Secondary as the Windows system output, it should allow the main output to be available for the ASIO driver. Hope this helps, and I totally agree, they really need to document the streaming settings MUCH better, because it's extrememly confusing when you are used to the GoXLR or something similar. Feel free to message me, as I've been playing with this alot and am starting to get a really good grasp of separating out everything, and how to use proper routing. Feel free to hit me up if you have any questions or would like to compare notes.

@cleosaurus
@cleosaurus 8 месяцев назад
Thanks for your comment! And yes, they definitely need to document this better. That was the whole reason I made this video, because I found something that worked and hoped it would help others that were struggling, even if it's not the intended way. I don't think it helps that we have a load of larger channels recommending the Rodecaster as a good alternative to the GoXLR, but then not giving any information on how to actually set it up. I bought the Duo due to a few recommendations on videos that I'd seen, and then was utterly confused when I couldn't even get it to do basic things that were incredibly simple to do on the GoXLR (not that it isn't capable of those things, just that it was next to impossible to figure out how to get it working). When I get some spare time, I may fiddle about with the ASIO driver and such more. However, I'm under the understanding that Rode are currently working on Virtual Channels for the Rodecasters, so they will be able to be set up more like the GoXLR. They've got a couple of firmware updates to release in the meantime, but they're saying it's a high priority. Meanwhile, my setup is working well as it is so I don't want to poke the bear so-to-speak. 😂

@@cleosaurus Thankfully my use case is fairly simple for now, so the duo does what i need it to.. but it takes a while to get your head around how the mixing works. Looking forward to updates for the product. Seems like they are committed to getting this right, even though it is taking them awhile.
@cbdemented
@cbdemented 8 месяцев назад
@@cleosaurus There are supposed to be more virutal channels coming, but they will not, apparently, be in the next Firware update as was thought. They've released the beta for it and it does not include them. The ASIO is it's own set of fun, and I haven't quite gotten it to work the way it should. The Rode ASIO driver requires exclusivity, which means you can't run a DAW and OBS at the same time, and because you have to use Chat as the default, I can't route applications to Main, which seems to defeat the purpose of multitrack recording. Have been playing with it in both OBS and Reaper, but not with much success. Going to go another round with Rode Tech Support on it this week and see if it's just the crap driver I think it is, or I'm just doing something incorrectly. I'll let you know.
@cleosaurus
@cleosaurus 8 месяцев назад
@@cbdemented Yeah, they said there will be a couple of firmware updates in between to lay the groundwork for it. They have a thread about it in the Rode Discord. I'm just hoping that it actually brings solutions and doesn't just create a whole load of new problems.

Hi! So this is going to be a thing you need to set up in OBS. Assuming you have the Duo set up in the same way as I have in the video, go to the Audio Mixer section on the main OBS screen (next to your sources, where you'd add your audio inputs and such), you'll see some cogs at the bottom which will take you to 'Advanced Audio Properties'. Click this and it will bring up a table with all of your sources and to the right-hand side, you'll see 'tracks'. Anything audio-related can then be set to a specific track. So for example, I personally have Game, Music & Mic all on Track 1 (a mega mix if you will), then Mic on Track 2, Game on Track 3, Music on Track 4. So in my editing programme, I can choose to use Track 1 without worrying about making sure everything is in sync, or I can use the individual tracks to have more customisation when editing. I hope that makes sense, it's a bit difficult to explain it without showing my screen. Let me know if you're unsure of anything but this is basically how I have mine set up and I can just delete tracks from my recordings when I go into the editing software.

@cleosaurus
@cleosaurus 9 месяцев назад
Hi! I'm so glad that you found the video helpful! When you say that it won't capture any audio in OBS, do you mean that you can't even see the audio picking up in the OBS audio mixer or is it showing there but just not showing up in your recording? If it's just the recording, then I would recommend seeing if playing the video in another software enables you to hear sound. Just to check it isn't a software based problem. If it isn't showing in OBS at all, it's a bit difficult to say. Is it just the gameplay audio you aren't getting (so mic, music, etc is okay) or is it all of them not working properly?

Thank you very much Jess. I found this video, because I had the same issues as you - coming from TC-Helicon with the GoXLR (mini) and switching to the Rodecaster Pro / Duo. Have you tried the new Rode software Unify? It looks it does exactly what the GoXLR did. I tried it today and configured my Spotify with the "Music" channel of Unify and it worked fluently. What I am still missing is the physical slider but still from a software side it should be possible. ;-) Thanks again for your video - helped a lot
@cleosaurus
@cleosaurus 8 месяцев назад
Hi! I'm glad that you found the video useful! I did install Unify, but I didn't really play around with it as the big thing for me is the physical sliders. As I have my OBS and game on the same PC, having to click out to mess around with a slider wasn't really ideal. :) Just so you know, Rode are working on having virtual channels like the GoXLR. They've said it's a development priority for them, but there will be one or two firmware upgrades in between to lay the groundwork. Then you should be able to use your physical sliders with multiple channels (music, game, etc). :) It's just a bit of a waiting game at this point.

@cleosaurus
@cleosaurus 8 месяцев назад
I'm glad the video helped you! I believe output should be Chat too, as you want your Discord audio to go out through that channel so you can control the sound levels via the Chat slider. Otherwise you'll be using the Main or Secondary channel, which means you'll have to mute your game/music audio to mute your Chat audio, if that makes sense. So you'd want your Discord on its own channel (chat for input and output), much like how I have my Music fully on its own channel with both Input and Output as Secondary. Hope that makes sense!

Do you not get double game and spotify audio doing this. Sorry I am just curious cause I don't see how this would split the two audio tracks separately without playing in unison on OBS. Great video btw
@cleosaurus
@cleosaurus 9 месяцев назад
Hi! So no, you don't get double audio. By setting it so that Spotify plays on the Secondary USB channel instead of the 1st, it separates them. It's all in that Windows setting where I changed the output for Spotify. If Spotify is playing through the secondary, it won't play through the first channel. Think of it like the Audio Input Devices section in OBS, where you have the separate sliders and you can mute your input devices. A channel behaves like an input device, so it's like I've plugged in a device that is purely for Spotify, and then another device for my game/system audio. I hope that makes sense? They can't play through two channels at the same time. You can then go into OBS and set these audio devices up to play on certain tracks, so they'll be recorded in a way that will then enable you to separate out your music from your gameplay and your mic in whatever editing software you're using.

if you mute music on stream, are still hearing the music on your earphone? or muted stream & earphone? bcs GoXLR have feature, they can mute only for streaming app, but u still can hear the music
@cleosaurus
@cleosaurus 9 месяцев назад
Hi! Sorry for the slow reply, I had to actually test it just to double check as it isn't a functionality that I personally use. But yes, next to the 'mute' button underneath the slider, there is a 'listen' button. I just tested it in OBS and, provided your headphones are plugged into one of the '1' headphone slots (which they should be if you are the only person using the Rodecaster), you can use this 'listen' function to hear music whilst having it muted to every other output, including OBS. Also, just to add, there is no double audio when you have the listen function enabled. So if you use this frequently, you can just leave the listen button on and then just use the mute button as and when you need to mute it for stream. I hope this helps!

@crafttobaffto Yeah, I use the NT1 preset, but I also use a filter in OBS to help with some of the lower level background noise. I can't remember the name of it off the top of my head unfortunately. Also, I do have sound absorption panels in my office space, though I can't remember if I had them at the time I recorded the video. But that may be another reason you're noticing a quality difference.

Hi! I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Are you getting the feedback when recording or just when you are listening/monitoring? If it's not coming through when recording and the noise sounds electrical, it could be that you need a ground loop for your earphones/headphones, as I get electrical interference when I'm listening to monitoring if I don't have the ground loop. If it is a really loud, high pitched feedback, it could also be related to any speakers you have plugged in causing interference.

Unfortunately I don't have a concrete answer as I don't use chat, so I can't say exactly how to set it up. However, it will all be in the routing. I'd recommend checking the video I have in the description. The guy who did this setup has a dual PC setup, but I believe he sets chat up on there and hopefully it's the sort of thing you're after. Sorry I can't be of more help. The GoXLR was a great option, but now that it won't be getting support anymore, there's the risk that something will go wrong with an update and it will no longer work. I have a GoXLR and it's definitely easier to set up, but hopefully thats something Rode will be looking into for the future.

Okay Jess! Update. The mic Monitoring issue taken care of, the game audio issue taken care of, but now I have a new problem. My USB 2 that controls my music. For some reason when it plays, it almost blows out peoples ears because i turned up the music but its like “blowing out the speakers” kind of loud. Are there any tips to better manage the audio to where you can play it but it not be so loud, because on my end the fader is about half way up, but every-time I’ve tried to turn it up in OBS it stays in the green and pops in the yellow every now and then. I essentially cant play music because its so loud to the viewers. It also is louder than my microphone. Also the knob on the right controls how loud i hear stuff in my headset correct?. I play hip hop, rap, rnb, pop, chill music. Ive essentially had to not use it because my viewers complain of how loud it is. As well as my soundboard. Any tips are appreciated. Its also hard for me to tell whether or not how loud my game volume is for stream. Some people said it would be too low, or too high. Any help or guidance is appreciated!.
@cleosaurus
@cleosaurus 8 месяцев назад
So you want to make sure that your music volume isn't going into the orange at all. It should be sat firmly in the green. If you are playing the music whilst you are actually chatting/playing, then you probably want it to be about in the middle of the green bar in OBS. I actually have my slider set to full, and then I went into Spotify and adjusted the volume in there until I could see it was comfortably in the green for any tracks I want to play. That way, I know that when the slider is at full, it's just the right amount for intro/outro music. If I need to talk over the music for any reason, I just lower the slider to about 3/4 or half way. Sound slider is set to halfway for me too. Game volume should be in the middle of the green bar too, generally, but you might need to adjust settings in-game if you find, for example, that the music overpowers the voicelines or sound effects are too quiet compared to the music, etc. Your microphone should be firmly in the orange, and you'll want to keep that consistent. I configured my mic on the Rodecaster so that the gain on there meant my voice was in the green (actually on the device). And then went into OBS and lowered the slider in there until my voice was consistently in the orange. I have the physical slider on the Rodecaster set to full for that as well, as you generally don't want to be messing around with your mic volume from stream to stream, it should be pretty consistent. A lot of it is going to be fiddling around and seeing what works for you. If you have people in chat, ask them if the music or your mic is too loud and then adjust your physical sliders accordingly for that stream. Then, when you aren't streaming, adjust things on OBS or in-game (I change my in-game audio volumes so that it is again consistent from stream to stream, rather than worrying about where my slider was in the last session) until you see them at similar levels in OBS to what your viewers want to hear. You'll find a sweet spot and then be able to recognise it the more you stream. I hope that all makes sense.

For some reason routing anything to the usb channels does not work. I can hear what I set up in windows sound settings, but routing sound effect in usb 1 for example does not work... as in obs doesn't capture it.
@cleosaurus
@cleosaurus 8 месяцев назад
Have you tried to see if any other software outside of OBS captures it? There should be a default recording software on your PC that you can check to see if anything gets recorded from that. If it does, then I would say that the communication between the Rodecaster and OBS is where the issue lies. When this issue occurred, I found doing the reset on the Rodecaster as I did in the video was really the only thing to sort it. Otherwise, without seeing your setup, it's a bit difficult to diagnose why it might not be picking up the USB channels.
@NotPareidolia

It's a bit difficult to say without seeing how you've set it up, to be honest. The only time I generally had that issue was when the communication between OBS and the Rodecaster got confused, which usually resulted in me doing the reset and following the steps in the video again. But it may be worth just double-checking that you have the correct audio sources selected in OBS and seeing if you can record the audio with the sliders changing volume successfully in any other recording software.

@cleosaurus
@cleosaurus 3 месяца назад
If your mic is clipping, I imagine it's not set up quite right on the Rodecaster. I don't use Unify as its not really meant to be used with the Duo or the Pro, so I can't really speak for the settings you have on there. My mic is set to 33db on the Rodecaster and then I lower the volume in OBS to about midway and that works for me, but it may vary depending on your microphone. I imagine you have the right dB set up in Unify but maybe not actually on the Rodecaster, so when the audio is going into OBS raw from the Rodecaster, it's just not got the right settings. I may be completely off base though. If that's not the case, then I'm honestly not sure as it's not an issue I ran into at all.

@cleosaurus
@cleosaurus 4 месяца назад
Unify was made for the Rode Streamer X. You can use it with the Rodecaster to some degree, but the virtual channels can only be used in the software, not with the physical sliders. The whole reason I wanted physical sliders is so that I don't have to click out of the software I'm recording and also not to have a whole other window open when I'm streaming. So Unify will work for some people, but it's really not made for the Duo or Pro and can't be configured in their Rode Central app. Having Virtual Channels that can be programmed to the physical sliders is the big thing a lot of people are waiting for.

@Editedbyzenzo Yeah, it's because the software is made more with the Streamer X in mind and not the Rodecasters. @cleosaurus
@cleosaurus 8 месяцев назад
Interesting, my soundboard is linked to the Main channel, and it has its own slider. Provided the sound slider is up and the Main channel slider volume is up as well, I can hear it through my headphones/OBS. I'm not sure why you wouldn't be able to hear it. And with regards to mic monitoring, I actively use that so I'm not sure on the exact settings so this may not be correct as it's from memory, but when you go to the routing options, there should be a headphone 1 option there. If you go into that, you'll see that you have your mic routed to go to your headphones. If you disable that, you'll no longer get the monitoring through your headphones, unless you use the green listen button (which is next to the mute button below the slider). Hope that helps!
@TracrrrTV
@TracrrrTV 8 месяцев назад
@@cleosaurus okay! I will check the issue for the mic monitoring tonight. Could it be the game settings itself? I play a lot of COD. I was tweaking with the settings the day before I watched your video. They could hear the soundboard but it was quieter to them. I would assume i need my USB 1(system audio/game audio) set to high as well as the soundboard. I then messed with the in game settings of the input and output. The input is duochat which picks up my mic, but if i set it to duo main stereo, my mic no longer works.
@cleosaurus
@cleosaurus 8 месяцев назад
Ohh, I think I was mis-understanding what you were trying to do with the soundboard. So you want the people that you're playing with to be able to hear the sounds? If that's the case, then you will need to route it through the Chat virtual channel. Remember that Sounds does have its own slider, so you can have Chat set to full volume, but the Sounds can still be quiet if its own slider has not been adjusted. I have my Sounds physical slider set to about the middle as that seems to work for my stream. Your in-game audio settings should be set to Input - Chat and Output - Main (or whichever channel you want your game audio to come out from). This is because you want the people in your game to only hear what you have routed to Chat (Mic & Sounds), whilst you want the Output that gets sent to OBS and your headphones to be on your Main channel (or Secondary, depending on how you have your setup, but it would be on Main if you have it like mine - so game audio, system sounds, etc). You don't want to set it to Chat as the output as you'll end up duplicating your microphone audio in OBS. If you want the Sounds to also be heard on stream/recording, then you will also want to route Sounds to your Main channel. This will mean that the people on stream will be able to hear the sound, as well as people in game. Because you won't be using Chat as an Audio source in OBS, that should mean that you won't get double audio. I haven't been able to test this as I don't have Chat setup for my own machine (I'm anti-social and only play single player stuff usually), so please be aware that this might not work 100%. It's a little bit of guesswork on my part. I hope this helps in some way!

@@Shivil Hmm, there's a couple of things that I can think of at least that may cause that, such as the green button below the microphone slider. If that's enabled, that may cause you to hear double (though I'm not at my desktop so I can't test to see if that's the case). There is a feedback setting so that you can purposefully hear yourself back, but that shouldn't cause you to hear your voice twice over.
