Federer was error heavy in this final and also Nadal was young and made Federer come back to a 5th set. At the end of the day Nadal was leading 2-0 and should have 100% won that 4th set. A more experienced Nadal would have won that 4th set.

@shaundhumphreys
@shaundhumphreys 7 лет назад
Yep. This was nadal's 3rd attempt to beat federer at wimbledon. The first meeting federer won straightforward, 2nd five set win to federer. And 3rd five set win to nadal. Nadal doesn't come back from 2 sets down very often. When he beats federer he needs to get the 1st set, or the 2nd and 3rd after losing 1st set. Nadal was doing a borg, having got 4 french opens in a row, and trying to dominate on grass too. He kind of managed it. Not as well as borg though who I got five wimbledons in a row. Borg and nadal are so connected for me. I don't know why nadal stopped being good on grass.

There have been a number of much more compelling rivalries in the history of men's tennis than Federer vs. Nadal. Laver vs. Rosewall is one example. Another is Tilden vs. Cochet. One of the reason this stands above other meetings between these 2 was the 'build up', Nadal had just beaten him comprehensively at Roland Garros, and Fed then declared he was more comfortable on grass anyway, and was still the best. Roger would have lost in 3 straight sets if he had not had his great serve which helped him a lot in the tie-breaks, Rafa was playing unbelievably the whole match and he totally deserved the historic trophy.

The situation was too different compared to the 2008 final. The fact that he beat Roger, who was close to his peak, was the crowning glory of Rafa's glory. This is like beating Novak at the 2016 Australian Open. Many pointed to Novak's decline in the WB final at 2023, and Novak was too old for a great rivalry.

The final that had everything! Domination by underdog, comeback by the champ, match points saved, drama, lights and a hell lot of action! This was the benchmark for years to come! But that's the beauty of these 3 knights. The disappointment was surpassed in AO 2009, quality surpassed in AO 2012 and Wimbledon 2018 (semi), drama surpassed in Wimbledon 2019, clutch surpassed in AO 2017 final set(Roger)!

I didn't watch a lot of tennis matches in my life but from what I've seen this is really the best match. I remember it summer of 2008, I was 15 watching this match. Good times. Everyone thought Nadal is going to do much more than he actually did after this. Injuries prevented him from reaching his full potential.

@@FearsomeVoid He won 22 slams. What else could he do LOL
@FearsomeVoid
@FearsomeVoid 6 месяцев назад
@@speedymr Win more than 22, Đoković won 24 and it looks like he will win more. He could have won more GS than Đoković, having a better head to head record with Đoković, win more Masters. He never won Paris and Miami for example. He needed them for his Career Golden Masters. He never won the Swiss Indoors Basel and ATP finals either. Maybe Nadal could have achieved all that if not for injuries. And ofc he would have become a better player than he already was, like winning more on other surfaces than clay. Keep in mind he won GS on clay, grass and hard court in 2010 before injuries messed his knees up.

Amazing the way Rafa had it all in that 4th set tiebreak, Fed was lost and on the ropes at 2-5 down, before Rafa double-faulted and gave him hope again. Rafa lost everything, an then regrouped amazingly for the decider !

@pkoppart
@pkoppart 6 лет назад
don't forget, he was two sets to love up. The way he was going, one would have thought he would wrap up the match in 3 straight sets. So, the real come back was by Federer. The match became a classic because Fed fought his way back into the match and took it till the 5th set.
@tom0176devo
@tom0176devo 6 лет назад
Peru he should've really won in straight sets, but Federer fought his way back in both tiebreaks. But having lost so many opportunities to close it out, and Federer coming on top in the crucial points, Nadal could've easily lost confidence and lost hope, but he kept at it and kept believing. That's what amazes me. Federer's comeback was extraordinary, but for Nadal to the give the next two sets away, then trail, then have to regroup, then comeback and win is something else.
