I was privileged to see Sir Roger in conversation at a film screening a few years ago. He was a perfect gentleman. He said as the Q&A session had gone on a long time, if anyone wanted to leave they should and not feel obliged to stay. A man got up and said 'sorry I have to catch a bus' and Sir Roger got down from the stage, thanked him for coming and shook his hand as he left!
MY James Bond, The Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker the two EPIC Bond movie's even better when as a nine year old seeing them in the cinema with my late Dad
As he confirmed, he was a great pal of David Niven, and when Niven was dying, looked after him many times on his visits. They were similar characters really, both old school English Gents, with immaculate manners, and universally lovedand admired. Compare them with some of the so-called film stars nowadays!
Always thought Sir Roger was the Cary Grant of his generation, but by the time he arrived @ MGM the great directors who made Grant the great star he was were gone & television was taking over. So Moore looked handsome in bad movies & was dumped, but took over the world on television as Simon Templar & then 007. Instead he & Grant worked together @ Faberge, both did speaking tours as well. But no classic film comedies or Hitchcocks for Sir Roger, times had changed. But Niven did play Raffles & then multiple Pink Panthers while producers wanted Grant for Dr. No, so Moore did carry their torches as The Saint & 007.
I just found out Roger died. I'm so sad, he was such a great guy, a real gentleman. He was handsome, funny, debonairem ,just an outstanding person. RIP Roger Moore.
Watching early b&w episodes of The Saint, close-up of him threatening a thug is truly terrifying! Plus Sir Roger was a big dude & you can see him doing his own stunts in his '30's.
Legend! An absolute legend. Charming, suave. The greatest interview guest anyone could have. Although Craig maybe the best Bond, I really do miss Moore.
Connery made Bond, but Moore kept the franchise alive by playing the comedy of a "secret agent" whose drink order is known by EVERY bartender on the planet!
Sir Roger worked with PETA to lobby against foie gras, took his kids to UNICEF frontlines in Africa to do charity work @ request of his friend & neighbour Audrey Hepburn, final scene of The Charitable Countess (last episode of 1st season of The Saint) is basically a PSA to support orphans (like JK is doing now for Ukraine). Remarkable dude who we so took for granted because of his enormous self-deprecating wit.
I dont think its really fair to compare the Bonds b/c they all approached the part differently. Connery was more of a tough guy Bond, he looked like he could knock a guy out. Roger Moore brought more sophistication and humor to the role. Personally, I prefer Connery and Daniel Craig, but I dont think any are really better than the others.
Different Bonds for different times, Lazenby had to make people forget original Connery & poor Dalton had to deal with AIDS era & studio changes, amazing his movies got made (apparently 1 didn't).
It's pronounced Roger not Woger, it's not Monty Python, Good think Wossy isn't a political journalist, he spend every 4 or 5 years banging on about the up coming erection.
