I loved the 101 and the 173 running days, seeing these relics out and about brings a smile to my face. Just be very careful with the families with out of control kids, some those leather seats split in seconds
As a young lad of 16, i gained employment in 1971 with London Transport. As an engineering garage trainee, i was sent to Poplar PR garage in Londons East end. I worked with older men who saw the introduction of the Routemaster bus in 1959. These new buses displaced the 'Trolleybus', and that meant the engineering staff had to get their heads around this new diesel vehicle. The older men who trained me were very thorough with regards their job. One man in particular Bill Nellis was a mind of information. Bill always got the difficult fault finding jobs, and on occasion was asked by other Engineering day foremen to help them solve a difficult Routemaster bus problem. As for RML 2760, it did run into Poplar a couple of times with mechanical trouble, and we sorted it out so that it could resume work on route 15. In 1985 Poplar garage closed its doors for the last time. The engineering and platform staff, were great people to work with, and hopefully very soon I'll take a trip to Leven Road and see if the old place is still standing. Thanks for your interesting film, it certainly brings back many happy memories. Kind regards to one and all.👍
nice to see traditional pure skills again. I noticed the driver's windscreen was a split-screen...was that still legal in 1968? I thought the law had changed. My home town of Swansea were big AEC customers (Regents, not RMs lol) and their half-cab screens were one-piece by 1968. The RM must be the most beloved vehicle ever designed and built in the history of the UK, certainly one that the most people have ever touched and enjoyed (few of us could afford Concorde)!
Sorry Roger, as preferring the RT class instead, as the RM’s were eventually trashed in London, ruined inside and out, they were good in their heyday at Brentwood in 1962 as Green Line RMC’s on the 721’s, although nice to see an RM/RML in original condition, even the Trolleybuses were a supremely better ride comfort-wise to the RM class.
