For those hoping for closure between Roger and Dave, it's happened 3 times already. They did Live8 in 05, which I cried through the entire set. I was good with just that. Then they did a small benefit in 2010 with the HOPING foundation for Palestinians and as a thank you to Roger Dave did Comfortably Numb with Roger in his final Wall arena show in London in 2011. Nick was evan there banging the tambourine for Outside the Wall! Given that ,i would think anything is possible but if that's all we get that's waaaay more than I ever expected. I'll take it as a win. It's not unlike a marriage when in a band for so long. The more you know about someone and the closer you are to them makes for deeper resentments when you've had enough. They are elderly men now. Whether they reconcile or not does nothing to change what they have created both together and apart. And please, please, PLEASE everyone stop bickering over who did this or that and just enjoy the music!

Personally, I think it's great how it worked out with TFC. If Gilmour had been more involved* it probably wouldn't have been the raw and visceral masterpiece it is. Sometimes the best art comes out of difficult circumstances. *By that I mean more involved in musical direction or production. Those of us who love TFC know that it contains some of Gilmour's best guitar work, so he did contribute...albeit through gritted teeth.

Although I also like The Final Cut, I understand why David was dissatisfied with it. Half of the album are basically leftovers from The Wall - and knowing how high standards PF set with their material, the question why would they use leftovers is completely understandable. On top of that, it's known that Waters was practically impossible to work with, completely considering himself as the absolute leader of the band. Yes, David probably didn't contribute enough with the material, but with Wright gone from the band at that time, you can see the direction where the band was going. I like Final Cut, but it's true that it's not on the same level as the Wall, Animals, WYWH and TDSOTM.

I think a source of tension was that David didn't have a lot of writing credits, not as many as Roger. So Roger could quit the band and still have a source of income to sustain him doing whatever he wanted to do. David needed a band, touring and albums much more than Roger did. JMHO. Yet the GILMOUR led Pink Floyd had one of the largest grossing tours in music history, at that time, whilst Waters was playing "down the road" to a few howling dogs. Waters wrote songs and was a barely competent bass player but the person who sang them & played "the guitar for the gods" is Gilmour. Presley never wrote a song and who remembers who did write them? If it was a choice to see the Gilmour Floyd or Waters the fans have already spoken by a long way. Every time I listen to "Comfortably Numb" from " Is there anybody out there" album and hear the cheers when Gilmour starts singing the chorus and playing the solos I know who they came to listen to. As for post-Floyd Waters albums..ho-hum!!!!

Meddle (1971), Obscured By Clouds (1972), and The Final Cut (1983) while not quite at the level of the big four were still solid offerings. I at one point had all the Pink Floyd albums but there was a noticeable uptick in overall Floyd album quality starting with Meddle -and a major drop off overall starting with Momentary Lapse. "'WHAT'S HIS NAME" is one of the greatest guitarists ever, without whom, the SOUND of Pink Floyd would never have reached the heights it did, along with the keyboards of Rick Wright. As Nick Mason has commented "Roger never really appreciated the musicians", much of which came from Gilmour/Wright until dictator Roger emerged. As for 'The final cut" Gilmour was right.."rejects from The Wall" and without the keyboards Waters now regrets.
@MaterLacrymarum

@thefuturefactory56

@@MaterLacrymarum Yep, "Animals" surely was a worthy "build" on DSOTM & WYWH..NOT!!!! Of course it was THE MUSIC of Gilmour/Wright on both ECHOES & SHINE ON that "we'd never have had" without them, as well. When it came to The Wall, an album I mostly like, the Waters dictatorship ,with his threats to take the project away unless Gilmour/Mason agreed to fire Wright only added fire to the flames of a crumbling band. However the crowning glory on that album is the GILMOUR music and some of the greatest guitar solos in music history on Comfortably Numb. As for Final Cut and Waters solo work...they have disappeared into nowhere land. The PINK FLOYD of 1971/72 to 1979 are the sum of all parts and none of them have come close to that era, post 1979. Now Waters is just a Putin excuser and an embarrassment.
@MaterLacrymarum
@MaterLacrymarum 11 месяцев назад
You can like what you want. Wright was a mess. To quote him: Both myself and Dave… had little to offer, through laziness or whatever,” Wright admitted in a 2000 interview with Classic Rock." He wasn't contributing., and the rest is history. Animals is a better album than Wish You Were Here. But others don't agree, and that's fine. It doesn't prove anything, it just expresses a personal preference. Was it worthy - 100% yes. The Wall is, justifiably, one of the greatest albums of all time. Again, you may not think so. Gilmour contributed, and he did a great job. The Floyd break up wasn't about anyone's ability. Besides, they'd been together since 1969 or so - what's surprising is that the kept together as long as they did. As for Waters solo work, you are so deluded. They haven't disappeared. What are you talking about? You must mean that you don't like, own, or play them - who cares? You're not the arbiter of good or bad, you just like what you like, and dislike what you don't. Stop projecting it on to others. I play any of Waters solo albums over Wish You Were Here, but that's just me. Your opinion is just you. For me, The Final Cut may well the best Floyd album. You hate it - nothing wrong with that. I'll tell you what I do dislike - Momentary Lapse of Reason, and Division Bell. Horrible dirge. Because when it comes down to it, Gilmour isn't a great song writer. He's a great guitarist, but not writer. His solo albums are horrible. On an Island is impossibly poor. Rattle That Lock is marginally better, but that's not saying much. You may love them, and that's fair enough. And finally you come to the real reason Waters bugs you - the politics. Are you a yank? Grow up. @@thefuturefactory56

The Final Cut... it was the lowest-selling Pink Floyd studio album worldwide since their sixth album, Meddle (1971). Very few go to one of his concerts hanging out to here his solo work, they mostly come back to life when the familiar sound of songs from DSOTM, WYWH and THE WALL start. When it comes to "growing up" those that condone the invasion by the Russian Nazis and excuse it as being caused by provocation by NATO ( despite the invasion of Crimea in 2014) need plenty of it, even when they are old men. Gilmour has admitted himself that he'd become lazy and wasn't contributing much. You think that Waters should have just sat on his backside and done nothing and hope that Gilmour would maybe, given a few years, come up with something? As for Wright, it wasn't a unilateral decision by Waters that he had to leave the band, and be retained as a salaried musician. Gilmour agreed. Wright himself agreed. And after Waters left Gilmour did not bring back Wright as an equal member of the band, for AMLOR he remained a salaried musician.

@@felays3171 The Final Cut is the last Pink Floyd album to feature founding member Roger Waters, who departed from the band in 1985. It is also the only Pink Floyd album not to feature founding member and keyboardist Richard Wright, who had left the band under pressure from Waters after the Wall sessions. The recording was plagued by conflict; the guitarist, David Gilmour, felt many of the tracks were not worthy of inclusion, but Waters accused him of failing to contribute material himself. The contributions from the drummer, Nick Mason, were limited mostly to sound effects. Waters planned the album as a soundtrack for the 1982 film adaptation of The Wall. With the onset of the Falklands War, he rewrote it as a concept album exploring what he considered the betrayal of his father, who died serving in the Second World War. Waters provided lead vocals for all but one track, and he is credited for all songwriting. Now if that don’t make it a solo album I don’t know what does
@creepingbrain

@@CricketEngland From DSOTM onwards all the ideas were those of Waters. Virtually all the music was composed by Waters. And all the lyrics were written by Waters. So if a true Pink Floyd album is only one where all members were equally involved, then none of those albums from DSOTM onwards were Pink Floyd albums. I do agree that TFC should be considered more of a Waters solo album than a Pink Floyd album, but it still has more of a claim to be Pink Floyd than AMLOR or TDB.

Roger. Mr. Waters. You're in my Top Five musical artists of rock/modern music (rock n' roll, et al.). I hope you take that as the compliment it is meant to be and please allow me to thank you for your lifetime of work, which I've been listening to since I was 13 years old, now 49. 'The Wall' and 'The Final Cut' were particularly healing for me in my teens, having lost my mother to cancer at 13. They remain among my favorite albums of all time, as do several others of yours, particularly those with your old bandmates. I do have one question, even though i realize it won't make the video. Um, WTF are you doing, Roger?! Seriously. Stop it. You still have time to stay among the most beloved musical artists of all time - or you can become another Mike Love, and I expect you know what I mean. Someone known more for their uncontrollable ego, vengefulness, and lack of grace than for the great artist you always unquestionably will be. But do you want to be remembered as a great but deeply problematic artist, or as just a great artist, or possibly even as a gracious great artist? Someone who with their fame, fortune, time and privilege spent their time doing good things, not petty things. Leave it alone, Roger. If you stop fucking with it, your legacy is secure. With all love and measureless gratitude, thanks again. As for Ukraine, maybe you could debate Sean Penn on the subject. That I would watch. Cheers.

I'm a huge fan of Roger Waters (and every other member of Pink Floyd), but I don't understand why Roger is so keen to denigrate the sublime pre Dark Side of the Moon period, which I find totally underestimated. Albums like Atom Heart Mother, More, Meddle and Obcured by Clouds are absolute marvels in my book. Live at Pompei is extraordinary! (I also love the Syd Barrett era). Of course, DSOTM, WYWH, Animals and The Wall are magnificent concept albums, monuments in the history of popular music, extremely accomplished both musically and lyrically but they are also more serious, tougher. I love them but they don't have the same charm as their predecessors. Or let's say it's a very different charm. Personally, I disagreed with Roger when he says everybody with any sense should consider the DSOTM-->Final Cut period to be the band's golden age. For me, on a strictly musical level (I'm not talking about production or lyrics/concept), I find the previous period more moving. Excuse my English, I'm French... (which doesn't mean that I don't pay attention to the quality of English lyrics in general and to the ones of Pink Floyd in particular; I especially love the lyrics of DSOTM, but to me, when it comes to music, music comes first). By the way, regarding the post Final cut period, my favorite album is Roger Water's Amused to Death (the lyrics are deep, even if I might not get all the subtleties, and the music is awesome). I don't like Momentary lapse of reason which I find overproduced, cheesy (can I say that?) and kind of empty in a way (do you see what I mean?). I prefered Division Bell and The endless river. I found them interesting and touching (even if there's still something missing... Roger? Obviously...).

The Final Cut has its moments, but I don't find myself ever wanting to go back and listen to it. It's sad to think of what could have been had egos remained in check and Floyd continued on in its best incarnation. Waters and Gilmore each contributed something unique. That said, I've always felt that Roger cost himself more creatively than he cost the other band members. For all his intelligence and lyrical abilities, he couldn't write the actual music. I've never heard a Roger Waters song on any of his solo albums that I've wanted to hear twice.

That there was a falling out over the Final Cut isn't in question. That the cover art is used to settle some scores isn't either, although the obvious case was on the back of the sleeve. And guess what - none of it matters. It's a Pink Floyd album. Look up ANY discography. It's Pink Floyd. It's just that some fans like to pretend otherwise, because: reasons. It's silly. Are you suggesting that any album recorded while a band was at war with itself, where a member pushed through it to get the work done, isn't actually an album for that band? So, fore example, Never Say Die isn't a Black Sabbath album? You're crazy. Next you8'll be telling me Momentary Lapse of Reason is a Floyd album, because Gilmour was happier. @@babarmoghal8199
