Welcome to Mysticism!
A new and abstract sound bank for the Roland System-8, proudly designed by Soundsauca. Diverging from the well trodden path of analog emulations and 80’s retro remakes, Mysticism takes your System-8 on a left field journey deep into Roland’s ACB synth engine. Utilising its refined oscillator algorithms, iridescent filters and effects, and immersing them into a mystical world of swirling sonic adventure!
The System-8 is already packed full of vintage Jupiter Juno & JX tones, and that’s where this sound bank’s possibilities only begin!
Individual demos are available here:
www.soundsauca.com/sounds/mys...
A rundown of the Roland System-8 and some of it's features:
www.soundsauca.com/roland-sys...
No external effects used. Limiter on the output due to resonant peaks etc - hope that's ok!
-----------------------------
- Sideband Sensation
Without a doubt the sideband filter types are my favourite System-8 feature. With it, colourful glassy fragments smear downwards in sounds like “Forest Glade”, whilst the distant undulation of the title preset - “Mysticism” softly absorbs your sonic senses. “Lost Sailors” conjures aquatic memories of times gone by, whereas “Space Tapestry” sews together newer sci-fi arpeggios.
- Formant Fondant
Another sweet feature with the System-8 is the formant filters, which enable vowel like textures to be imparted on the synths oscillators. I’m palpably (sad I know!) proud of the preset “Sith Lord” with it’s deep and sinister whispers that Emperor Palpatine might hold a light sabre to, and “Formant Fairies” which might fit nicely into some EDM genre or other. Whilst another highlight is “Ahh 1080”, but steady on man… leave that JV alone!
- Frequenting FM
FM on the System-8 is FM for the rest of us. It’s refreshing to be able to get many of the best FM timbres and process them through the S-8’s filters and FX. Beautiful EPs like “Much is Clear” and “Ellie Scolding” hold up next to deep ambiences such as “Ionospheres” and “Stella Sails”.
There’s more to discover, with a JD-990 sound or two creeping in! But I will shut up with my superlative laden prose and let you decide below with the audio demos.

Great and wonderful work you've done here! Truly incredible soundscapes. And yes, the Roland System 8 is a true synthesizer monster. I've loved Roland Sounds since the beginning. I have the Roland System-8 and many others love it and will certainly not give it up again. Thank you for these wonderful sounds, you can listen to them for hours!!! Sometimes I got goosebumps but also tears in my eyes :-) If I didn't have a System-8 yet, I would buy one now at the latest😀

I suspect you also programmed several patches for the Waldorf iridium and those videos convinced me to buy the iridium keyboard. Now I am checking out this system 8 video and I’m convinced I want a system 8. These companies owe you a percentage of each synth they sell. And your presentations of these sounds are by far the best I’ve seen. Too many fools trying to show off their hands instead of the sounds. Thank You! Tasty, juicy, understated, and fresh sounds that transport the listener. I will be buying this sound set for damn sure! I owned a system 8 back in 2017 and sold it to buy another synth. Clearly the system 8 has been augmented quite a bit in the last 6 years. It may be Roland’s best yet. I own a jd-xa and it’s going to get lonely after I get the system 8
@Soundsauca
@Soundsauca Год назад
Hi Brian. Thanks for your post. Actually I've never touched an Iridium! I'd love to but it's a bit pricey for me. "Companies" - I've had dealings with a few now. Some have been very open & friendly (the sort of open mindedness that can make things happen) & others that have taken an obvious dislike for me! I'm not averse to working with anyone, however I've decided to keep doing things as I do as I don't see it as purely sound design. It's also an auditory/visual presentation of a synth. I guess that makes me a "hobbyist" and not a "pro". I can live with that moniker! I've never fitted in and, having considered it a few times recently I've decided not to. That's not to say I don't/won't beta test/sound design for anyone, but getting onboard the corporate Choo Choo ain't gonna work for me. System-8 is a great synth for sure with some esoteric features that IMHO are often overlooked. With this bank I tried unearthing some of that. V-Synth is another you should check, some of the System-8 algorithms started life there, albeit more lo-fi.

Purchased and installed tonight, definitely some amazing sounds, really shows off some of the capabilities of the System-8. I do have one suggestion: it doesn't look like any of the patches map key velocity to anything. Particularly on the plucky or percussive sounds, you might want to at the very least map velocity to amplitude, to give the player some more control over expressivity. Perhaps on the pads you could map it to filter cutoff offsets.

Very nice patches! Its the style what I want in a synthesizer, pads, atmosphere, ambient, abstract, and so on that way. I was always a fan of Roland, most of my synths are Roland and they will always be... sound and price, a nice combination as Roland always did. Even my first synth I bought a very long time ago was an ARP Omni2 and a Korg MS20. Unfortunately i dont have both anymore, the ARP stll doesnt go out of my memory. Later I had a Jupiter 4 and a SH-09 and a SH 101... the Jupiter was great but limited, I sold it long time ago. In fact I am a guitar player, and I did spend all the money in pedals and effect racks etc, for guitar. I bought the latest Roland guitar synthesizer GR 55, but after one year using it I sold it... the cable and the pick up on my Strato were to much for my mobility. Was a great guitar synth, but I was sick of the cable, and honestly wasnt my thing talking about freedom to play the guitar. Years before I bought a D-50 was a famous synth that time... I still have it. The memory cards were expensive, and sometimes the battery was over, and data lost. I bought a JD-800 when it came out, the best synth I ever had... I think was the best synth Roland did... after the Jupiter 8. A tragedy happened some years after when a red brown liquid started to come out under the keys, and metal pieces falling from... its well know world wide this big mistake in the glue under the keys for those metal pieces to give some weight to them. the glue falling did enter in the contacts and some keys didnt work anymore. I was so sad about, I wrote an email to Roland, but no answer. Still can use it with MIDI. I bought some months after a JD990, and the expansion "Vintage Synths" for it... it is till now the main synth I use, and still alive...even the cards (I have 20 of them... more money for batteries, etc). For bass lines, when I need it, I use a Roland alpha Juno1, I love it... even I play bass guitar in my songs most. Curiosity; I have also a Yamaha CS1X... not bad. Well... sorry that I wrote too much lol... you know how musicians are. Hugs! I did follow you at Soudcloud and insta by the way! I also have a cat... cat lover are nice ppl! 😹

Wow! Love the enthusiasm here! No problem, you can write away! I get it! It's always nice to talk synth shop. I could talk for hours about it. I've heard of the JD-800 glue issue. Mate of mine has one with that problem. D-50 never owned but D-110 was my second synth (what a baptism of fire that was!). Still it taught me a lot and it still works:) Had a JP-6 I had to sell due to young family and needed money. Big mistake as they're now worth stupid money. Still I don't think they're worth the ridiculous sums they fetch. It's a nice synth but y'know! Anyway nice to speak. All the best:)
@PROJECTOAZULjjgg
@PROJECTOAZULjjgg Год назад
@@Soundsauca Thank you very much for the reply at Soundcloud, and for all atention! yeah a JP-6 costs a lot now but a JP-8 well... its like a used Ferrari at the moment, but if you think about a Yamaha CS80, its almost a Buggatti lol. The JD800 still have also an high price in second hand... We arent milionaires lol, if so I would buy me a MiniMoog D... but that dream is too far away. Once again, your JD990 patches are amazing good! I did spend lots of time doing my own patches to, most of my songs use it, its still my prefered Synth like the CS1X is also.

@Soundsauca
@Soundsauca Год назад
Indeed it does. I look at them as quite different propositions. Juno/Jupiter X are vast in their capabilities in every way. However there's no denying the System-8 aims for a more accurate rendition of certain classic synths. For typical classic synth stuff, Zen based instruments hold their own. With more esoteric stuff, S8 can pull ahead. Both are valid!

Hello @synth4ever thanks a lot for stopping by! These are all single patches and no external effects. I only have the cloud version. There's a few overlaps between 2 sounds but they're quite distinct - so no performance patches. It might be the sideband filters - they can often make it seem more is going on. I used the mod wheel on a few sounds and tweaked the filter etc on some as well. Hope that's still legit?! The graphics are me fiddling around. Some are filters and after effects, others just pictures. I did a little less of it this time as it roasts my laptop on rendering and takes so much time which would be better spent making sounds ;)

Startlingly beautiful patches. Indeed. Query: What is your opinion in comparing the ACB vs the Zencore engine?
@Soundsauca
@Soundsauca 3 года назад
If I had to choose one I would go Zen as it covers so so much. The emulations are pretty good but the synth engine to me is more interesting and is vast. If it's purely to emulate that "classic" Roland sound then ACB is probably the right choice. If you just want a synth to play and tweak, the S-8 is hard to beat. I've not spent that long with Zencore (although I know the JV/JD/XV line quite well) but Zencore is better in almost every way. The main reason I haven't is there's so much content out for ZC from Roland I see little point in adding to it at this stage. I might change my mind one day! Also the Zen VA engine appears to pluck bits from the V-Synth so that's a possible expansion too. Hope that helps!
@pentacle9783
@pentacle9783 3 года назад
@@Soundsauca Thanks for your in depth feedback. I think I will try the Zen Core as it does sound impressive as much as the ACB. Financial restrictions is guiding me to go with the former especially since I'm wanting to get my hands on the Newer Sp2400 Emu Sampler emulation box. I listened to the JD-800 Zen & was floored to hear how realistic its sounds are depicted considering I own an original. I just wished they wouldve added a "drift" algorithm function like in Modal's Cobalt8 to really get that unique sense of older analog circuits
@mac651000
@mac651000 2 года назад
@@pentacle9783 For what my opinion might be worth, the system 8 sounds better than the Jupiter X, which has AMB instead of ACB. The X's engine is the Zen Core, and it can do wonderful things. As a complete unit, it beats the system 8 in terms of sheer capability and function. However, if you just want sound, and nothing else really matters, the ACB on the 8 is just incredible. AMB works by replicating the tonal sounds of analogue. ACB works by replicating the process by which analogue sounds were/are made. That's why the System 8, despite being a digital synth, is indistinguishable from a true analogue synth in the vast majority of its sounds

System 8 or jd-xa?
@Soundsauca
@Soundsauca 3 года назад
It depends. In a nutshell the S8 is a 2 part 8 voice poly dedicated to vintage emulation. These emulations are first class. Along with this, the S8 engine has extras like FM, sideband filters etc. The JD-XA has a 4 voice analog engine coupled to a 64 voice supernatural synth similar to the one in the Integra7 module. It’s VA element is arguably a sophisticated sample based synth but with more Lfos & effects. The analog side I’m not so sure but I’d side with the S8. The JD is a better choice for bigger layers and textures, in my bank I hoped to illustrate that the S8 can also achieve exotic sounds unique to the synth. In terms of sound quality I think the S8 has the Jd beat. The Jd has a larger but on the whole more traditional sound sculpting abilities. S8 negatives - single lfo, less polyphony and FX. Tough decision... hopefully someone else chimes in with other opinions.

Based on this video I bought my Roland system 8. I read review after review criticizing it’s plastic build and green lights. I LOVE how very light it is and how it LIGHTS. I use it with my Maschine Plus and Akai force at gigs and it always gets attention. The lame argument about analog and digital gets more lame all the time and the system 8 should put that tired stuff to bed! It’s like the argument over Digital and Vinyl. Vinyl is LAME. It degrades into gases and once the needle does it’s course, all that warmth and clearing is GONE. System 8 is easy to carry, and relatively inexpensive. It’s a great synth and I’ve been using them since 1987

Totally agree Brian. The digital/analog debate is for the most part moot. I certainly wouldn't turn down a Moog One or something:)!! But I never feel wanting with the options I have. System-8 is a very good machine on any level. The engine is extremely versatile and can replicate a great number of "classics" whilst going far beyond their capabilities. Add into the mix reliability, gigability etc and it's a keeper for sure! Best, Michael.
