I’m a watch enthusiast myself. I own the newest version of Omega’s SMP 300M on Black on steel bracelet. Love this watch. I’ve always wanted a Rolex Submarine to wear and enjoy in my watch rotation just like my Omega, but as we all know over the last few years prices in my opinion had gotten ridiculous. I call it irrational exuberance. I’m not the kind person who gets caught up in paying 30K for a 15k retail watch. I’m personally not going to play that game. I’m happy to hear that the air is coming out of the balloon and I don’t feel sorry for the watch flippers.

“The days of walking into a Rolex AD and buying a watch are over”. I don’t think so. I think supply is coming back online within a few months. It’s a matter of when interest rates will go up. The governments are on crack right now. They have messed up everything. Inflation is the fault of government policy. Rolex prices are inflated. Car prices are inflated. Home prices are inflated. Food prices are inflated. Everything is inflated. Thank you governments.

Until the market prices approach retail again, I think AD's will continue to hide stock in their safes. The display cases being empty are a tactical decision. While the stuff in the safe might not be Daytonas, Subs, GMTs, SkyDwellers, they do have stock. They're just pretending they're empty, so when you do get a call about a piece, you think you're super special. What was actual broad scarcity is now back to limited scarcity and broad artificial scarcity.

The concept of making the movement the rotor itself, the gears needed, the center pinion still the center pinion, etc, is simple from an engineering standpoint. Any engineer or tinkerer can picture it in their mind. The hard part is making it fit into that limited shape that is the rotor as opposed to the whole area. The machining and the intricate details of it all coming together. PITA. Really dig Cartier. The winding is the easy part. Think of it as the watch rotating about the movement if that helps.

Price “correction” is a hell of a lot difference than “collapsing”. Let’s face it, these Rolex inflated prices will eventually come right back up to where they were over time like they always have over the last few decades. Give it 5-10 years and todays prices will seem like a bargain.

As a watch lover since childhood so almost fifty years I personally will not shed one tear for any dealer or individual who loses money because they bought a watch as an investment. It is greed pure and simple and has made loving watches and enjoying them become tainted. New Rolex or Patek for me have gone down in my esteem simply down to the types who have been buying them. I simply would not want to be associated with that type. Shame as both are great watches but by association they have become tainted.

With that being said those aren’t all dealers and there are still some that do it out of pure passion and joy.

I remember in 2008, when the economy was collapsing, fuel prices spiked, and the first noticeable things in my area to get affected were boat sales. Nobody was buying new boats and a lot of people put them up for sale. I’m sure a lot of builders went out of business during that time.

Nothing quite like buying an unimpressive mass produced Rolex Oyster for $6000 and then an additional $70,000 for the privilege of a blue dial. Most Rolexes are probably overpriced even at MSRP based on the movement, build quality, fit and finish, and tech compared to a lot of the competition (GO, Omega, Cartier, GS,...the list is long). But if that Crown and blue hue really means a $70,000 premium to you, its your loot. Personally Id be as far away from the watch world right now considering the worldwide economy is on incredibly shaky ground with runaway inflation, spending, wars, and devaluation. There's gonna be a recession and its gonna hit hard and nows the worst time to be spending money on luxury goods. A lot of people are going to take a bath.

@@kleinbottled79 I think there's a perception that Rolexes are made from unicorn dust. The "we own the foundry" song can only play for so long however once you dive into the actual materials, details, tolerances, fit and finish, tech, certifications, and features and then realize its nothing really unique to Rolex and many other manufacturers are offering the same or better at much more competitive prices. If someone has to have the brand on their wrist to validate themselves, then no cost or justification is too high. For just about everyone else however, the watch world is tired of playing into Rolex's second-class citizen treatment and feeling like one has to be "invited" to own a Rolex and that its more of a privilege to be sold one than anything else. Its the same way Ferrari operates and it has turned so many potential buyers away because -- in Ferrari and Rolex's eyes -- "I'm not good enough to own the brand." Who wants to do business with a company w/that kind of attitude? There isnt a watch on the planet worth 5-10x MSRP or a 3yr wait or requiring the purchase of 5 watches you dont want and will never wear for the one watch you do want and will wear daily. Buyers are losing Rolex fanboy tastebuds and matriculating to competitors more than willing to sell them any watch they want this afternoon at MSRP or even a discount.

Collapsing is a clickbait title. Softening from their insane run up over the past 6-9 months is true. But until you can again get a new steel Daytona for $20k or a PP Nautilus for $45k or an AP 15500 for $26k they are not collapsing they are just normalizing.

People are grossly overpaying for three hand Date Just that have unremarkable movements that Rolex will eventually start mass producing. I wouldn't put Rolex in the same sentence as AP. The latter's output is miniscule and have no capability of making a million watches per year.

I don't think the Cartier Masse Mysterieuse you pictured has disks, it's just a movement in the rotor with normal hands. There is a watch with disks but that's the Rotonde de Cartier Heure Mystérieuse HPI00635.

Just talked to my friend about his sellin his "Kermit" rolex. He called the largest secondary Rolex Dealer in America, they told him that did not want anymore of those watches at any price. So he sold it to another dealer for $21,000 . This was 8 days ago. Makes you think they know something is up.

I don't know how you can categorize my opinion, but I believe that current production model watches shouldn't be sold on the aftermarket for higher than their brand new price from the brand/AD. It's only vintage watches, watches that have a limited amount of them around, that became history and came out well preserved, that should sell for a market price that could be crazy to the Moon. I think it makes sense on a collection perspective. Vintage watches of any given model or reference only exists in limited amount and they're not in production anymore.

On the Cartier mystery clock watch - they dedicate resources to this crazy watch not for the people who'll buy it, but for everyone else with a Cartier who has to explain that Cartier isn't just a jewelry brand. It's like Tesla leading with the Roadster to prove electric cars could be badass.

I'm a Cartier owner, a Tank Must XL 2021 actually, with a in house caliber 1847MC, and it's both, it is a classy jewelry brand and a killer piece of horology. Cartier has nothing to prove about their watchmaking skills, whatever the watch shop you enter with a Cartier on the wrist, you're immediately getting approval and interest.

If you purchased a Rolex sports watch at retail....there is no need to worry. They will NEVER go below retail. Try buying an excellent quality Hulk, Batman, Pepsi or Daytona for below retail. Call me when that happens. If I had a dollar for every time someone said the Rolex watch market is "crashing", I'd have a Patek Philippe in my collection.

How exactly does price movement of an asset correlate to the supply demand & how many are being made its not like these watch companys are going to magically find 10,000 new watch makers.

I think you guys need to be realistic about future prices of Luxury watches. Especially Rolex. Most Rolex watches are not rare like you said. Watching what is happening now with interest rates and its effect on the real estate markets and stock markets makes me believe that luxury watches could come down a lot more. Anyone who paid 2 or 3 times retail for their watch needs to be prepared for lower valuations. If you bought your watch with the idea that you would keep the watch long term this should not matter. Flippers need to be worried.
