@@dorianshadesofgray2981 Ukraine is the US's front line of defense of democracy. NATO is the first line of UNITED STATES' defense against historically-imperialist Russia. LEARN THE HISTORY instead of swallowing Trump's anti-Americanism as if it were substantive. It is NOT FACTUAL.
The Germans living under the Weimar Republic were drowning in out-of-control inflation and sending huge parts of their income to pay reparations for WWI. They were desperate people who were willing to cling to absurd ideas, (as desperate people do). The average American enjoys an income that is significantly higher than most of the developed world. We enjoy the most diverse economy that has ever existed, the world's currency, the best universities... (list goes on). But the media have convinced the average American that they have it rough, that they are the ones suffering and that the only thing standing between them and the happiness that they deserve is the political opposition. They don't know true desperation, but they make choices as if they do.
If you had paid attention in history class, you would already have known that answer. The Weimar Republic was a failed state after WWI. People were burning pallets of money to keep warm because the wood was worth a lot more than the money was. In the midst of this chaos, a small group promised to make things better. Their leader managed to blackmail the dying elected President of the republic into appointing him Chancellor, and from that bully pulpit he was able to convince a lot of people that everything would be fine if it weren't for one particular group of people, and that by sanctioning, locking up, and ultimately eliminating these people, the government would thrive.
Same here in Germany & Europe and maybe even worse all over the world. Hope/ love and little prayers and learning learning learning the same all over. Much love and best wishes and ps. we believe in you!@@myedoxx
I don't agree with Romney's republican policies and certainly he's just another politician looking out for wealthy interests above nearly all else, but there's no doubt he's a FAR more intelligent guy than a lot of the other republicans on the national stage.
You want more politicians from oven hands mitt? He will endorse Trump by the end of the race. I just wonder how many more boots he will keep licking to stay relevant.
Reminder that Mitt Romney v. Obama were the last rational/sane presidential debates this country has seen...and those happened 12 years ago. "Good evening Mr. President, I just wanted to congratulate you on such a happy occasion (wedding anniversary), and what a joy it is that you get to spend such a beautiful occasion...here with me! :)" -Romney to Obama, 2012
Were people actually annoyed by that? Pretty sure the message was well-intentioned, but it just came off super creepy by how he said it. Everyone I knew just though it was funny.
I remember feeling like it was evidence of his tone deafness. He said things like women (rather than parents) needed flexibility in the workplace so they could be home for when kids got home from school to make dinner. Obviously his right of center, Mormon background influences his worldview, and I did find myself taken aback by how antiquated he sounded when talking about women. But in retrospect, I mean, it's not even comparable to where we've landed in 2024. Makes me feel pretty darn niave to have gotten wrapped out in the outrage of 2012. @@pwslattery

There are far too many respected Republicans who are warning against re-electing Trump. The TV Ads will scroll the names of more 100 Republican officials who will be voting for anyone who can stop Trump. The Trumpists should wake up, but they really truly can't see; they are in a Cult with all the Cult behaviors, and reason cannot reach them. Trump is a Sociopath and his followers cannot comprehend the words of the psychologists who are warning us who he is. When a Cultist hears warnings all the warnings sound "incomprehensible" or like "confusion." This is a big red Flag: a brainwashed person can only hear opposing words as "confusing." I wonder if those who are against giving aid to Ukraine would argue that France shouldn't have provided aid to the American Revolutionaries. Aid that, many historians would argue, led to us winning and gave birth to the nation and our form of democracy they are now supposed to represent. Food for thought...
You’re not getting it. France giving aid may have helped America, but at the end of the day, it was their decision. Had they decided not to, it wouldn’t have been necessarily morally wrong
I had family on my maternal side that fought in the 1770s revolutionary. And I was related to the 52nd signer of the 1776 Declaration of Independence. Although he did not personally sign it himself, he sent his son to sign the Declaration.
different times, careful evoking history to argue ideological precedent. In the decades following the war against the British for Colonial Independence, the French were no closer allies than they were when there was stalemate for the frontier in the New World between France and Britain all throughout the 1700s. It should also be mentioned, we strengthened ties to Britain and all but retained them as our primary ally for trade.
France helping the Colonies during the Revolutionary War is a bit different than the US supporting Ukraine. The Colonies were not a sovereign state at the time, they were part of Britain. This would be more in tune if the two eastern provinces declared a war of independence against Ukraine. They did not, and in fact were negotiating an agreement with UKraine for more independence, without separation. France had no stake in the outcome. The Colonies would not become part of France. But they did want to breakup the power base that England held. The US also has no stake, we will not gain any territory if we help. But Russia has a huge stake. They will gain territory equal to some or all of Ukraine. This territory will solidify their annexation of the Crimea and give them a greater presence in the Black Sea. It will also open the door to attack Moldova and the Baltic States, restart their attack on Georgia, and perhaps even try for Poland. Second, France had no obligation to help the Colonies. In fact, if it helped us and we lost, Britain might turn its forces on France. But the US does have an obligation to help Ukraine. We have recognized Ukraine as a sovereign nation since 1991 and while Ukraine is not a NATO country yet, if it falls, there is a very good possibility that Russia will continue to try for other sovereign countries who ARE NATO members. Third, we are supposed to be the leader of the free world. Do we stand strong or do we become cowards and give up on democracy? Do we let China or Russia take over the leadership position, knowing that neither have a democratic government.

"Tyrants are often popular. A democracy is one where you have the will of the majority, but through rule of law the rights of the minority are protected. Otherwise it's a tyranny... an autocracy." Malcolm Turnbull, Prime Minister of Australia from 2015 to 2018, talking about former-President Donald Trump.
Mr. Romney hits the nail on the head! CHARACTER IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT! A leader is the strength of a society; and the citizens of a country must be very careful of the type of leaders who are put in leadership. A leader must be of sound character...exemplary behavior! The character of a leader determines the character of a society. Once lawlessness is practiced and accepted by our leaders, then it shapes the society and it becomes the norm. Once lawlessness takes over a society there's nothing left to build on. It will be demolition from there on!!! Even if a leader does poorly economically or otherwise during his tenure of leadership but has good character, a country can rebound because the foundation remains strong. Mr. Romney makes all the sense. He's a man of wisdom!
For All Trumpettes: notice how Mitt said positive things about Trump, but also provided very coherent, rational reasons he wouldnt vote for him. No slander. No childish insults. No baseless judgmentental outlook or takes. Your cult leader should take notes

From my perspective in the UK, why on earth isnt Mitt Romney standing for President. He seems like a thoroughly decent man with a very accurate understanding of the world today and the role the USA needs to play in it
It may be because he got demolished in the last attempt, not least because the left was decidedly more derisive and ridiculing with him then than they are now.
Well you could say similar things about Obama and Romney lost to him. Also Republicans hate Romney because he’s vocally anti-Trump. The crazy part in all of this is why so many people are so supportive of Trump.
R better than T is not much of an endorsement. When looking at candidates, it’s important to look at their characters and votes. Where did they stand, what did they do, who and what are they? Vote. Be an informed voter. As a senior citizen, I want to know if a candidate wants to butcher SS. Will the IRS be funded? Will Head Start be funded? Will safety be funded? ACA? Will women’s right over her own body be codified? And the character of the candidate matters.
