Hello Dear Ronins!
HERE HOW TO CUT WITH A KATANA COURSE
ronin-hood-online-dojo.teacha...
Don't forget to like and subscribe!
this is the new review about the ronin dojo pro brand
and ronin dojo pro katana #19!
In "the paper test" section the comparaison between 1060 and 1095 carbon steel was between a violin and a harp (not a string (even harp and violin are string instruments).
This is a 1060 carbon steel shinken,
all the measurements and my impressions are in the review,
Measurements of roninkatana.com
Steel: Through hardened 1060 steel samurai sword
Saya: Hand cut and polished buffalo horn Kurikata, Koguchi and Kojiri.
Weight: 2.6 pounds = 1179 grams
POB: 4 1/2- 5 inches = 11,43 cm - 12,7 cm
Length in saya: 42 inches
Tsuka: 11 inches = 27,94 cm
Blade: 28 inches
Habaki to tip: 27 inches = 68,58 cm
Ito: Silk
Sageo: Synthetic silk
Fuchi: Backened iron
Kashira: Blackened iron
Menuki: Brass
Ronin Hood measurements:
nagasa: 69 cm
pob: 12,7 cm
weight: 1157g
motohaba: 3,15 cm
sakihaba: 2,3 cm
motokasane: 7,25 mm
sakikasane: 5,5 mm
sori: 1,8 cm
tsuka length: 28,4 cm
tsuka thickness: 2,65 - 3,3 cm
tsuka width: 3,3 - 3,9 cm
tsuba: 7,45 cm diameter
hi: nohi = no groove
steel: 1060 carbon steel
if you are a iai practitioner (in dojo) you can easyly find this product in US on the website of the brand
roninkatana.com/dojo-pro-kata...
They say ito it is made with silk but from my touch it looks synthetic...
I was not crazy about it, if you are a iai practitioner I recommend you to make your own opinion at your dojo with this product if you like it,
but in my opinion too heavy and the steel 1060 is not so amazing
and materials a little bit cheap, I prefer Hanwei business model (materials tissue (except the tsuka))
Please only use for dojo practice, these tools are not toys
and you can really hurt yourself or others with it
(without good handling, good posture, correct attention and correct physical preparation and most important advises of your sensei...)
Stay focused, mind sharp and body healthy
Sincerly Budo
RH

This is a terrific review, one of the better ones and a great contrast to the brick, log and water jug smashing variety. I learned a lot about what to look out for and was really looking to get one from the Dojo Pro series as well, thanks !!

Dear Ronin, thank you for your comment, yes it is a beautiful koshirae, black samegawa and gold menuki give a very clean and noble style in my opinion.

Nice taste. Thats the same one I picked up a couple years back cuz I loved the tsuba. Sadly, the tsuka came warped, ito was so loose the kashira was literally dangling off before I could make 10 cuts with her. Blade is nice though. Gonna get a replacement tsuka eventually.

Dear Ronin, Thank you for your comment, this is a sad story for your tsuka ito and kashira damaged at reception... I'm not crazy of their business model (dojo pro) materials and manufacturing indicate something that is not sturdy (shitodome not glued and tissue in the saya) and not well finished (close the same than first prices products from Yarinohanzo/Katanamart). In my opinion it is not a question of money, if you sell a product it has to work for years for it purpose. I hope you will get a replacement of product or refund (even it was bought a cup of years ago).

Over the last 10+ years I've owned around 40 Japanese swords and blades. Things ranging from $150 all the way up to several thousand on Antique and Japanese made swords. I've owned 2x Ronin dojo pros in that time. Both were some of the worst swords I've owned. The first one I thought was just a lemon, so I gave it away and ordered a second one. Very similar issues. Sure, the blade might be good, but the rest of the sword is trash. I just don't understand how my Musashi brand $150 katana was put together better than TWO $300+ Ronin's?

did the steel held up well does it have good edge retention or do you know how much hrc it has?
@RoninHood
@RoninHood 2 года назад
Hello dear ronin, thank you for your question, by edge retention I think you mean does 1060 carbon steel keep the sharpening on the edge a long time ? Yes 1060 is correct even I prefer 1095 or T10 because the cut feel easier to me when it goes into the omote material because of density and it should keep longer the sharpening than 1060 theoricaly. for hrc I don't know you can check on the website page of ronin dojo pro.

I have a question. Do you know if the seller has anything to do with the quality of the sword? For example if I order a John Lee katana from a seller that is famous and if I order the same katana from a not famous seller is there any difference?
@asoasotriadio
@asoasotriadio 3 года назад
I mean do all John Lee katanas for example have the same manufacturer or different sellers might have different manufacturers?
@RoninHood
@RoninHood 3 года назад
Dear Ronin, thank you for your comment and question. It is a really good question in my opinion. The seller can't improve the product (ex: histophile.com/katanas-samurai.com > John Lee) but can damage the product (couteaux-center.com > keep product in a bad area without fresh air or worst they are not new product or they put some mechanical cheap oil on shinken) or send it back to the factory if the product is not well done by the swordsmith (the check control quality made by a good seller protect the buyer (that justify their %) > histophile.com/katanas-samurai.com) before selling the product to the buyer. It is important to check the seller and the product before to have the correct product because one is the guaranty of the other in my opinion. I tried with hanwei product with couteaux center and it was a really bad experience: product damaged already used (koiguchi not fit at all with habaki, scratches on the blade, cheap car oil on the blade, not appropriate behave and communication from the seller (no phone) 4-7 days for mail answers). With coutellerie Tourangelle Hanwei product was perfectly shipped, good and clear communication by phone, new and fine product. Between Couteaux Center and Coutellerie Tourangelle I didn't receive the same "hanwei" quality, and that is sad. The seller has to care and be passionate by his job and propose good product that will be checked and preserved the best way until shipping to the buyer. I think it is better to pay more for a good seller and good product that receiving a deception in my opinion. (and bad seller (Couteaux Center) sell with expensive prices bad products sometimes...)

It is a good technical question. From what I know john lee brand is a german/chinese brand. I think every "john lee" sellers of europe buy to the "mother house brand" in germany that has her manufacturers in longquan or in china. Maybe different manufacturers but checked by the german brand company I guess. John Lee is an entry level, like katanamart/ronin dojo pro/hanwei/huawei/fudoshin/jko/ryan/munestoshi/musha/musashi products. Sellers in europe prefer cheaper brand (without good balance and hours of swordsmith work) because they can make more benefits. From all that cheap practical entry level shinken a few works good for tameshigiri because of balance. Balance is the numbers of hours to forge by the swordsmith, and for 300€ it is really difficult to find something with a correct weight distribution and with correct materials (steel, ray skin, wood, coton, silk etc). I think there are 5 types of entry level: 1/ Bad : musashi prac YNH 2/ not so great : ronin dojo pro 3/ acceptable : john lee hannya or practical hanwei special, hanwei XL 4/ good : I didn't try but maybe munetoshi could be there pronostic 5/ very good : I didn't try but maybe huawei could be there pronostic Tests with John Lee with a 1M75-1M80 good swordsman should be more objective than me in matter of size fit for appreciation of the sword balance.

cutting has nothing to do with steel sure it will dull faster but what matters is the polish need to be so smooth
@RoninHood
@RoninHood 2 года назад
hello dear ronin, from my experience 1060 cut less well than 1095 carbon steel. It is physics more density with stronger material so less resistance on omote cutting with a 1095 cs edge. For cutting 45-60-95 cs can cut as you can see in my different reviews but there is a difference on the cutting process and feeling with these 3 types of cs. Polish doesn’t have influence on the cut.
