The last 45 seconds says it all. Plus, the agent will ask for 3 estimates before any damage is even being assessed by the insurance company is a deterrent and passes the buck to an unsuspecting homeowner. The claim was filed- send an adjuster out. Period.... Sending 3 contractors out, and having them spend time and resources for the the insurance company’s benefit is absurd. Xactimate is a widely accepted program that determines fair market value for each general area of the country.

I had roof replaced. Had three estimates. Out of the three only one mentioned they would put vents in the roof. For some reason the model I have did not have a ridge or a side vent at all. So if I did not get those estimates. I probably would have no vents still. Also I was looking the materials they were going to use. It wasn't the price for me because either way I had the deductible.

It should be noted that insurance companies are exempt from Federal anit-trust laws via the McCarren-Furgeson Act of 1945 which allows them to exchange claims data and other information. The data collected is complied and shared on a C.L.U.E. report generated by LexisNexis which summarizes all losses and claims history of the insured to establish additional risk, if any, and to set policy prices.

You want to know why you get a high bid? You probably get a high bid because other damage that is not seen at the time of estimation may not be paid for... Therefore you just bid high in case something goes wrong. And, anybody who's ever done anything knows how well construction projects go.

Paul from MN.Great debate! Wish there was more. Yes, I always try to be kind. I have embarrased myself long ago and never changed anyones mind. Insurance companies are changing their language in the policys so they dont have to match shingles anymore being State Farm. Also they wont pay for shingle replacement around hail damaged vents. Insurance companies also buy reinsurance to cover their losses, they don't tell you that. So when they pay out after a major storm they make a claim and get their money back. Also in Florida there is a fund that the insurance companies can join where they can get their money back but in order to use that fund the insurance company has to lower your premiums and the insurance companies who all cry poor mouth refuse to join that fund. We are going through an insurance claim right now and the insurance company does not cover the cost of the roof and we have replacement cost coverage. When you add in investments to their bottom line they do not lose money even after a disaster.

There is also another elephant in the room and that is banks refuse to loan people money if their home has any hurricane damage so after you have to cover all these deductibles you can't even get a loan to make up the difference to fix your home. We are going through this right now in Florida, we have shingle damage, the insurance settlement is not enough with replacement cost coverage to recover the roof. So we have not only the deductible but also the low ball settlement so you may need to get a loan but because you have hurricane damage the banks automatically deny any loan. Our roof is the equivalent of nothing more than a re-shingle yet the banks are all blanket denying loans to homeowners with hurricane damage.
@mustangecoboosthpp3869
@mustangecoboosthpp3869 Год назад
The insurance company already includes the deductible into their settlement that they pay you. So the amount of your settlement already has the deductible removed from your claim check. Further the insurance companies all low ball your settlement knowing their settlement will not cover the loss.

Being a contractor of over 20 years the key thing is to call a contractor and have him come out and give you a bid but do not let him know it’s an insurance bid and you’ll get a fair and honest bid. Never tell them it is insurance. As soon as the contractor hears the word insurance all he sees is $ and pads the bid all he can. I would say 90% of the time or better the money the adjuster is going to give you to do your project will actually be more than what an honest bid will be. I have seen this way too many times
@asonofAbba2
@asonofAbba2 Год назад
I flat out tell clients that I make more on insurance claims. And I need to. On retail bid, I go out once to bid and that's it. Very little office overhead. For an insurance claim, I need to go out for the sales appointment, again to the adjustment, again to grab supplement photos on most jobs, we have 2-4 hours of additional overhead to manage the claim internally. Are you suggesting it's proper for me to make the same in either scenario? We need to make more on insurance jobs to justify all the extra time. While we make more, it usually isn't substantially more....usually it's just enough to justify the extra hassle.

@@asonofAbba2 I’ve been a contractor for over 20 years. And I have just as much time in the insurance claim as I do a regular job. A lot of the times they insurance company gives 20% I give 10% back to the customer for upgrades. Especially fire. They’ve already been through enough. It’s the right thing to do. And it’s got me a lot of work because of it. During the recession we were the only people that were never affected and were told were the only ones buying lumber during that time. So it has paid off for me in spades. The times when I made my most money were on commercial projects. And if it was just enough for you to justify the extra hassle than they must’ve been small jobs

Insurance companies slow claims down and bend the rules to their benefit. Something as big as calling hurricane damage flood damage to something as small as not paying for starter or code upgrades. There is more abuse on the insurance companies end of things. Looks like they are now trying to stop the appraisal process and have more leverage over the insured. Think about it! In all insurance contracts the hold the right to make changes and most of the changes to policy are not to benefit the insured period.

All this nonsense would stop if policies were written to include Fiduciary responsibility. Because the nonsense about "three bids" circumvents the fact that reconstruction is about the number of line items mandated in many states by the Building Code and not by a struggling contractor's lowest price to the benefit of the insurance company and the end-point expense to the policyholder. If the words duty and responsibility are thrown by insurance companies then fiduciary responsibility should be a part of all consumer policies.
@vblic
@vblic 2 года назад
But what if you don't want the materials the first is going to use. So you get another estimate. What if you don't like the way the person does business. You get another estimate. I think it's more about what the insured wants to get out of the roofer regardless of price. That makes sense.

Yet another example of why giant corporations are terrible for anywhere they exist and the population they claim to be there for. We should require all insurance companies to down size split up to only operate within 1 state each. The smaller these companies are the more people they employ, the more they care about the people they insure, and the more they care about the place they do business. The more national a company becomes the less charitable they are, the more indifferent to their customers/employees, and the more unethical and immoral actions they will engage in. This mindset should spread to more categories because in general the idea is the same the bigger thw companies the less they care about the things important to the customers who do business with them.

Insurance companies are under no obligation to pay whatever the insureds want. Nowhere in the insurance policy does it say, “we agree to pay what the insured and their contractor want”. The idea behind multiple bids is a confirmation of market price. How many homeowners go with 1 bid on non insurance jobs? Why shouldnt the insurance company get that same benefit?
@TAGGdinc
@TAGGdinc 2 года назад
Utterly false that insurance companies dont want to engage in litigation. Insurance companies especially national ones have an entire legal department that is retained through monthly salary to act on the companies behalf for any litigation that does come up and they get paid wether they are handling zero cases or 100 cases. This is why insurance companies dont give a damn about having to go to court since the lawyers who act on their behalf are getting paid regardless of handling few or many seperate cases. True increasingly all national companies are building up their legal departments and they are growing to an overwhelming size of every business in the country and world. I would also say that these legal departments are always able to fly under the radar escape any and all criticism meanwhile the more and more lawyers become involved in any business is to the detriment of that insustry and not the benefit. Lawyers effectively give companies the ability to refuse to hold up their end of the bargain unless forced in a court of law which only further increases the power of the lawyers in the country and further degrades the moral ethical standards of the country as a whole. Even smaller businesses are constantly fighting b.s lawsuits from bigger compqnies who want to control the behavior of that company in any way they want. Nowadays if you want to open or start a business you better have the money to also have a decent legal team or you will be eaten alive by the bigger fish who do have legal departments.

If it’s the State Farm video they mention. The contractor was completely patient and right. Should he have filmed it ? Absolutely. The lawyer (on the right) was wrong and also wrong saying the adjuster was bad. Nope. Wrong again . He was doing what he was trained (lack thereof) to do. Undertrained, underpaid and over stressed ( my opinion) at the expense of the policy holder, the contractor and the adjusters well-being. Based on what I saw in the video and my opinion (20 years in insurance) is State Farm being their own moral hazard by letting their profits grossly overlap their responsibility to their clients, community and their employees. I get it State Farm you have shareholders, but if you deny coverage based on moral risk then you’re no better than those you deny. Industry based on trust… hmmm… . Kind of hard to do when the when the company’s bylaws number one obligation is to the shareholders and not anyone else. Fact!
