Hi Christopher, I used to make these by hand with my Mum in the 70's when i was still in single digits. My Mum made up patterns for everything, but she mostly did it to make ends meet and also to raise money for the church or the childrens nursery for 3-4years olds, or for the hospital neo natal wards, things like that. We made real teddybears from old fur coats that were going out of fashion because of animal protection leagues and such like. She even made the swivel joints for the teddies so that their arms, legs and heads could move. You talking about your Granny makes me remember so many things that my Mum was so very, very talented at, thank you. She taught me lots of crafts from woodwork, leatherwork, metalwork, crochet, knitting, basketry, embroidery, lace work, the list goes on. She used to say why have a dog and bark yourself, but where everyone laughed at me and my various crafts that was always in my hands, i still think of a very special, talented lady who taught me so much. I'm not sure if it is passion or just determination, I embrace a challenge. I've been sewing for 50+ years, my mother owned a fabric shop. She could see a designer dress advertised in the Sunday paper and make an adaptation with patterns she had. I watched that through my young years. I love to see my efforts as the finished product.
Like you, I'm trying out various techniques. Some have worked & some have bombed. I went thru some of my sewing feet & pulled out a Brother "Edge Joining" foot. I tried it out & ta dah! If you're lucky enough to have this foot, give it a try, so much easier than using an open toe foot.
I made my first bowl last month. I have also made another bowl and coasters. It was so fun. I hadn't seen any videos on this until late last year. I love it. So much fun. I've got others planned very soon. Thank you.
