Jimi Hendrix was once asked “How does it feel to be the greatest guitarist in the world?” his alleged answer was “I don't know, go ask Rory Gallagher.”
in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Jimi Hendrix was asked, “How does it feel to be the greatest guitarist in the world?" He is believed to have answered, “I don’t know, go ask Rory Gallagher ” I think it was not just a compliment
@@ML-uh2nk That quote has never been verified unfortunately as there is no real evidence of him ever saying it, it has actually become a bit of an urban myth. I've seen all varieties ranging from it being Clapton saying ask Prince or Jeff Beck etc. But there is no doubt that Rory was and is a guitarists guitarist and easily one of the best blues guitarists of all time
i SAW RORY AT LEAST 15 TIMES BOTH AS A SOLO ARTIST AND IN TASTE.....I have all of the so call " best " NEVER EVER did I see anyone better than him.......Even Jeff Beck
Tony Mcphee (the groundhogs) is hugely underated , without quite being in the same class as Rory.If there is a better guitarist than the g man I've yet to hear him/ her.
Absolutely amazing seeing live play live. Saw him at the Savoy in Limerick during the 70s, just out of this world. Taste/Rory Gallagher, Skid Row, Thin Lizzy…..how lucky I was to be a teenager in those wonderful days.
I only got to see Rory once, it was pretty much a religious experience for me, amazing talent, the tone, style, musicality is second to NONE! RIP Rory✌️💜💜
Remember watching this on tv in uk. Old grey whistle test, whispering bob, the only place you saw rory on tv in those days. Rory wrote some amazing songs. Never did, and still doesn't get the credit he deserves. Bless you rory, thanks for all the great music.
I saw Rory on October 16, 1987 Hammersmith Odeon The Playlist Continental Op Moonchild I Wonder Who Don't Start Me Talkin' I Ain't No Saint Shin Kicker Kickback City Loanshark Blues Off the Handle Failsafe Day Out on the Western Plains Walkin' Blues Pistol Slapper Blues Keep Your Hands Off Her Bad Penny Follow Me The Loop Seems to Me Tattood Lady Double Vision When My Baby She Left Me Shadow Play Lonely Mile Bullfrog Blues I'm Leavin'
Incredible track, I'd forgotten just what a great guitarist Rory was. His potential was there for all to see back in the days of Taste. He always had a very individual style. Back in the day he never stopped touring and must have been one of the hardest working musicians around. Thanks Rory, you are definitely missed.
My first Rory album was Irish Tour '74. When I heard this song, my jaw hit the floor. I've been talking funny ever since then. That was about 45 years ago. Still one of my favorites.
Saw Ruari at was then Hammy Odeon with my Irish mum way back in the early 80’s. He was brilliant as per usual. Player my favourite track Souped Up Ford. What a great slide guitarist he was on top of his other skills. Mum enjoyed it as well, whose usual fare would be more traditional like the Dubliners etc. vive Ruari! One of our wee countries great exports! ☘️👍🇮🇪
Me and my two best mates watching this effin genius at the old free trade Hall Manchester Stoned out of our heads on this tour please take me back there 🙏
Rory was a very great guitar player and also a very nice person. He lived for his music and that is exactly what i miss of most bands of today. R.I.P. Rory, we still mis you.
I still refer to one line in this song from time to time. If I'm ever chancing my luck or pushing something a bit too far I tell people I'm 'skidding on razorblades'. Thanks for that one Rory!
Saw him play this live at the Lyceum in London, it was a highlight of the night for me, he played an extended version, about 12 minutes or so, little did I recognise the pianist, who I went to school with in Plumstead. and played in the school choir piano, I was one of the singers. He brought the house down with this number, best gig I ever saw, the man was simply astonishing. Met him a couple of times, amore humble and down to earth person I have yet to meet.
WOW! Just WOW. I just found out about Rory Gallagher. Boy was I missing out during the 80's. What an amazing talent!! Had to check out the documentary. What a shame we lost him. His guitar must miss him!
He was bigger than you think.......... I lived those years, and attended every U.S. tour he made; Sold Out across the board. Never confuse conglomerate record sales with "success". He was on the top of the heap in his genre........ and still is; sharing the room with the other three caballeros..... Johnny Winter, Mike Bloomfield, and Roy Buchanan.
I only wish I didn’t wait this long to experience the worlds greatest blues and rock player! I was into the Heavy Metal scene at the time. What I waste of time and energy( I am a guitarist as well) and no longer listen to that crap!! Live on Rory!! You were certainly a gift to the world!!! Rest In Peace.
Rory was of a rare breed. He was a real man & stood strong for what he believed. He didn't get radio airplay here in US because he had been in the business since 15 yrs old & learned quickly how record industry manipulated bands & wanted no part of it. We still knew him, loved him, realized his genius & attended his shows. Back then most of promotion of bands & records was done over the radio. Then it took off from there. But believe me, if u ever saw him, & I did, nothing could ever make u forget him!
Definitly the best combo with rod de’ath &lou Martin 73-74 is a magic era and what a wonderfull guitarist he was... still miss you, thinking about you every Time i grab my fender RIP Rory
One of the absolute greatest ! I saw him in ‘75 and have seen Townshend, Page, Clapton, Santana, Slash, Perry and Beck on numerous occasions. No point in saying who’s best. They’re all different and thankfully so, but I’ve never met a more humble and lovely “guitar hero” ever. However it MUST be noted that such palm muting, Celtic rhythm and harmonics were unheard of back then. No mistake people…..an absolute LEGEND! Love you Rory!! 💚💚💚💚💚
Great guitars, great band, great song … how we all miss you Rory … you left us when we were all wishing for more great performances not forgetting your humble self where most times you placed your music above your own interests just to make people like us happy … RIP Rory … truly you’re the greatest guitarist many haven’t heard of … sadly sadly missed.
His music was so great and hearing his music now affects me like it did in the 1970's and the energy it had always made me feel good. His talent was great .
God, I miss that man! Lucky enough to have seen him live 5 times here in the States. Of all the lineups through the years, this is my favorite. I could write a paragraph on how much his music has meant to me since I first heard him way back in 74, nearly 50 years ago! RIP Rory, you are missed and loved by many.
As an old desert rat of a kid in high school north of Tucson, Arizona in the early-70's....one of my earliest vinyls was Rory. Can't remember it's name, but I wore it out. Then an old girlfriend got ahold of it......zip.......it was long gone. So....Rory came thru live at our new Community Center and I bought a ticket. Can't remember the other 2 bands with him. Anyhow, the guy who was to pick me up....my best buddy, who was always late for everything.....did it again, and came by really late. The 45 min. drive to the other side of Tucson to the concert I was biting my nails and screaming at him to haul ass. Long story shortened....I walked into the concert while Rory was doing his LAST tune. I saw him for about 2 mins......that was IT. Boy was I a pissed off ticket-holder. But what could I do? Nuttin. Nuttin' at all.
Ths guy right here really had it! i put him in may favorites right up there with both of the jimmy's, SRV and a few others. Its the feel and soul in the playing that gets me more than just raw technical ability. Its hard to get bored hearing him play. UNLIKE some of the proclaimed best out there.
iconic performance by Rory - he's just at one with his Strat . .. just pure unconcious com;petence ,. from @6.10 ' in just makes my hairs stand on end such a humble guy too and who knows when to step back and let his band shine on .
Fraudulently altered the birthdate on our learner's license to see Rory, Rod, Gerry & Lou. After the 1st song we stood up and clapped. Rory looked over, smiled and nodded a thank you to our table of 17 year olds in the front. Humble, genuine & a great, underappreciated musician.
Absolute legend!! So unfair that I didnt hear him during my childhood.... But an absolute gem of a discovery in my late 40s when I think I am having a personal renaissance!
Saw him twice in one weekend. Newcastle City Hall on the Friday, saw my team Sunderland win at Blackpool on the Saturday then Rory at Sunderland Empire on the Sunday. If the Good Lord had wanted to take me after that I think I would’ve gone.
Rory has been one of my favorite guitarists since I was 15; I'm 68 now. So glad I got to see him! One time Rush opened for him, another time Kiss opened for him. Wild shows!
Had the privelige to see Rory at the Royal Albert Hall . Even had a posh box and Rory blew us away with his wonderful skill and after numerous encores at the end of a brilliant evening he finished by saying he hoped we liked it !!! I love him and miss him dearly. He is the reason i love the irish . Xxx
Rory remains one of my favourites and this track in particular. When the credits rolled at the end of the video, I noticed Duncan Browne was one of this shows guests, I had never heard of Duncan but thought, if he is on OGWT he would be worth a look. Turns out he was great and if you’ve not heard him and like Nick Drake-esque singer songwriters then his performance from this particular OGWT it’s available here on RU-vid.
