My friends and I were excited to see Deep Purple play at the old San Bernardino Swing Auditorium in 1973. The opening act was some new dude with a band named after him. Rory Gallagher from Ireland. Wow 🤩 We we’re blown away. We called for 3 encores and he inadvertently stole the show from DP and needless to say, my buddies and I became avid Rory fans. We had purchased quite a few of his albums. What an incredible talent he was.

Similar story. I was in (then) West Germany in ‘71 and a couple mates and I went out for some live music and beers in a small suburb of Stuttgart, at a little movie theater with a stage. I’d never heard of Rory. It was a intimate space with no more than 300 seats. Bought tickets at the door. These three guys came out and took the roof off. We were in shock. Amazingly, this video doesn’t truly convey the energy. Never before or since have I seen the likes to equal that musical experience.

This was a man who could make a guitar do anything he wanted it to. You realize that he's getting that wah-wah effect not from a pedal, but from his volume control on the guitar, right? I had the good fortune to see Rory perform in a tiny club in Philadelphia around 1979. Just a few years ago I also had the good fortune to visit his home city of Cork, and went into the public library, where a small but terrific music library has been set up in his honor. There was a sense of reverence about the place as people came in to borrow records, CDs, and DVDs about music. By the way, a very good documentary called Ghost Blues is a must-watch for any Rory Gallagher fans who haven't seen it. I never amounted to anything as a guitarist, but Rory Gallagher has been an inspiration to me for over 40 years. If I had to summarize why, I'd say it was his dedication to doing what was important to him as an artist and performer, rather than trying to cash in by riding along with pop trends.

@@danielpalmer5835 you mean 'swells' or 'violining' but yes, was going to make same point, basically people like him and gary moore, they were at both controls constantly, i play too and use them loads throughout a blues gig, its complex, like everything ffs lol, but... volume, also alters tone / cleaness of sound and level of distortion, tone makes more bass or treble, blues uses the changes in volume and thus tone a lot i guess, the actual, tone control, i touch twice, to make it bassier on two songs.. i could do the wah thing with it, i use vilioling a bit recently, with feed back and bends too.

Rory could have made 3 different songs out of most of his songs if he wanted to because of how many riffs each song held . If the record companies had their way they would have split his songs up into multiple singles. Rory wasn't into that stuff though. Take Mississippi Sheiks for example. There were so many different vibes and so many variables in that one number that,,, well,,, I digress.

Back in our younger days, in old London town when we were young our parents would send us to college gigs to see Rory Gallagher and his boys and get the education to last us a life time from this MASTER, been in his classroom was the very best thing that could happen, we came away knowing things which we have used all through our lives. When you have some spare time click on to RU-vid and watch this human hurricane in action, The Master Musician Rory Gallagher and his boys going to town at full speed, shin kick going crazy suffering from the bullfrog blues and shadow playing at full pelt. What other person would walk on hot coals then thank his audience a million. Rory Gallagher that's who. How fantastic and brilliant it this. It is also beautiful to look at, it is the concord of the open road. If you need a backup driver just give me a call. I have only 1 condition, do not ask me to sharp turn when going at full blast.

@@friesiamans1966 Hi! Firstly, I was referring to the poster's name (tck roofing), which might be the name of his company. Just like you appear to be into cows (Friesian cows). Anyway, "roofing" is working on roofs, generally speaking. Roofs are the covers they put on top of houses to stop the rain, snow and German bombs getting in. Roofers were very busy in the 1940s.
@friesiamans1966
@friesiamans1966 3 года назад
@@Ndlanding well, of course i know what a roof is, german bombs or not, haha, but i thought there might be a sort of slang meaning to it that i didn´t know yet - well i´m more into friesians as my ancestors instead of the cows, in honoring memory of the hard work and the countless lives they gave to make the area here at the north sea coast and the moors inhabitable - but i also like the black and white cows, yessss - thanx anyway... :-)

Edit: also have to say the drummer is amazing as well. The way he was able to change with Rory as the song progressed, seemed like he had to be a little creative and quick with it too

Being Irish, you can see and feel the angst that particularly his live shows brought out in his audience. The 70's was a very rough time for the Irish people, with the whole religious and IRA stuff going on, blood in their streets. Rory got on stage and the people just rocked out and loved the energy. He bonded with his audience to a degree that still captures our attention to this day. He'd do shows where he literally walked out into the crowd still playing, with sweaty people hanging onto him and just played his guts out. Rory was a phenom and i don't know any other guitarist who has ever been able to create that unique formula of music, performance and raw emotion that he did.

The Belfast shows - as I understand it - were a big, big deal. Nobody - no big names anyway - would go there to play except Rory. Even for this tour they could not bring in the full recording rig because they could not get it insured, so the recording quality is not at the level of the other shows. With the box set release you can finally hear the whole show

The guitar and man are one. It's putty in his! Molds the most beautiful sounds, sliding his hand up and down the volume (someone please correct me, maybe it was a wawa peddle), he makes the guitar bleed. I just discovered Rory 5 years ago. One great value of this most vast wasteland. So happy to grow up in the 70s and 80s, and discovering the blues, initially on vinyl. Just listen to the music without any distractions. It had your full attention.
