I Have a 1 year old female 107lb Rottweiler, she is consistently focused on me. When I was a child we had a White Shepherd and he was focused just like this with my father. They both have similar characteristics, the Shepherd is just typically faster and lighter so their endurance tends to be better. My Rottie is quite athletic just not as athletic as a 70-80lb Shepherd.

The Rottie is a diesel and the Shep is a petrol / gasoline. The Rottie can pull a land sled or trolley much easier than a Shep.

had a gsd before, currently have a 3 month old rottie. gsd has a really high standard and so far the rottie is keeping up with training but i noticed the rottie follows me more and prefers to stay by my side and stare at me.

I have a white GS that just turned 5 years old. He's a really good dog, very strong, very smart, and listens for most part. We go for a mile or so everyday first thing. I'm getting a female Rottweiler puppy next week to be his companion and new family member. I'm really excited for her to get here.

I have had a variety of dogs throughout my life..from Spaniels to Huskies to Mastiffs. I rescued my first Rottie back in 97. She had a very abusive first 6 months of life. The spca would take the dog and return it to the abusive home everytime...until someone took the dog and she found her way to me. Of all my dogs I ever had, the Rottie, by far, was the best dog I ever had. No doubt. Best with my newborn daughter, best family dog, most loyal and trustworthy, and easier to train than the GSD I have now. I miss that dog.

I was born into a world with an Alsatian but I now own a Rottweiler with a Portuguese Mastiff. All dogs are/were wonderful loving family companions and refuse to say one is better than the other.

Both are great breeds IMO and both make great protection dogs as well. Just depends on what you like or what you are needing them for. The rottweiler definitely has the more intimidating look when you see it in person but the German Shepherd has that bone chilling bark even without seeing the dog. For me i use mine as a house protection dog, so the German Shepherd made more sense for me because of the bark. I rather have someone think twice before seeing the dog than waiting till they break in

Hey Will, I've got a question about breeds. I want a very balanced and powerfull breed to have in my house. I grew up with American Akitas, a Malinois, a Kishu Innu and a couple Great Danes. I didn't train any of them and I wasn't their master by any means, so I wouldn't say I have plenty of experience, but I'm not a newbie either. I have a 3 yo and a 6yo in house and my wife id in deed a newbie with large or mid sized dogs. My dog would have a very small backyard (25 sq meters aprox) and plenty of time with my kids to play, but the main excersise would be with me on a MTB trail and the daily 1 mile walk (aprox) during night time. I love GSD's, Rotties, Cane Corsos and Amstaff dogs, but can't decide which would be better suited for my family. BTW, I like to go out on vacation about once or twice a year for 1 week and I would like a dog that is able to be left for a couple days alone or better suited for a traveling family. I hope you can help me out with this, at least to narrow it down even further. Thanks a lot

For what it's worth as another owner with experience owning several dogs you mention, I have a couple thoughts for you. Of that list the Amstaff will be a good fit for a household with a bit of experience but not with advanced training. If you're willing to up your game and get a dog more exercise than just 30 min of walk and romping in a smaller yard, I think you can handle a GSD too. A great dane could be a possibility for you, they need less intense exercise but are capable and definitely intimidating to would be theives poking around. The other breeds are more serious responsibilities. You would need to get very high level professional assistance to have a safe and well behaved Cane Corso if you haven't raised one before. They are so powerful that if badly raised you could not hope to restrain one if it identified a new friend as a threat, nor could I and I'm a 240lb 6'3 guy. I don't mean to discourage you if you really want to have one, it just doesn't sound like quite the right time yet.

These are my 2 favorite breeds as I had 3 GS and 2 Rottweilers. I’m biased as I love German dogs. I love both equally but the GS is faster while the Rotties have a more powerful bite. Not an expert but just love German dogs. I own Thor who’s 2 and weigh 115lbs. He’s not as sharp yet as my GS Lucky but he’s getting there!!

I've owned both breeds. They both need an enormous amount of exercise and activity to stay focused. Neither were terrific herding dogs. They got along fabulously and played for hours outdoors running on the property of a few acres. Neither of these dogs are good apartment dwellers. These dogs need lots of owner attention and interaction. They are not for individuals who travel and are away from home. Both breeds love to chew on old water hoses and bicycle tires and enjoy chasing tossed balls and frisbees. These two breeds are probably the best security breeds as they both are protective and aggressive towards intruders. Both breeds need lots of water. If you have a really limited budget, these dogs are not for you as they eat a lot. Three of these dogs cost about $150 of food per month and more. My german shepherds tend to experience ear infections more than the rottweiler, but overall they are healthy dog breeds. We keep our dogs indoors at night. These are terrific pets for those who have the time to spend with them. In my opinion, these are the best two large dog breeds "IF" you spend time with them. These dog breeds require human attention and time investment to maintain a balanced psychological life.

I have a year old male GSD who is awesome, I am super lucky and he has a naturally curious and calm temperament so he is easier and faster to learn than many of the dogs I've watched at training sessions (I mean all gsds at an IPO club) but as a result he is on the low end of the suspicion scale and isn't agressive to people or dogs outside of the house. But I also love and respect Rottweilers. Growing up my neighbors had one who was very well trained and would even keep an eye or ear on all us kids when we were playing in the neighborhood. Once there was a strange car creeping through our small 6 house street, and he took off at them when they got close. I didn't fully realize what was going on and I never once saw him act aggressively (except when he killed a groundhog). It's totally possible it was a house hunter looking at neighbourhoods, but I'm sure Crunch, saw something he didn't like and protected the whole neighborhood's kids. He was super sweet to me and my brother, we knew not to hug or kiss dogs, but he took it with a doggy smile when other kids grabbed him. They are a bit more intense too in their defense job, not better or worse but maybe more stubborn/independent than I prefer. I don't find them intimidating at all, but they're a breed I will do a body language check on before getting anywhere near. My impression is that like GSDs if a possible threat moves slowly and calmly and backs away they have the stability not to attack, is that accurate? Anyway, both breeds are fantastic choices for owners prepared to put in time and work. Neither is for a casual detached owner, period.

Hey there, love your videos, great wisdom and knowledge. On German shepherds shedding, I have 2 Czech GSD's male and female and shedding is not too much of a problem for me. I never brush their hair. I have a shark I let loose every other night that comes and eats their hair off the floor. Sometimes during the heavy shed I have to let it loose every night but mostly almost every other night. Then on weekends I sweep the corners where the shark can't get to. Shark being an AI robot vacuum. We had a rumba to start with, but it's too much hair for it, lol sharks do better.

I have a 10 yo female Rottweiler and a 2 yo male german shepherd. They are the best dogs I've ever had!! If I could just combine them into one dog and keep them forever I would. (She's too old to breed now, plus that's irresponsible just b/c I want one of their puppies.)

Would you say that the rotts are more independent thinkers? I've had both breeds all my life plus boxers. I've noticed that the rott is slightly more resistant to training although never in an aggressive way, more like a streak of stubbornness.

Why aren’t you comparing the Rottweiler with the straight back GSD? That’s a larger GSD.

It’s just on average the German shepherd is probably slightly less affectionate and attached than the average Rottweiler. Doesn’t mean that there aren’t a majority of both breeds that are just as affectionate, it’s just based on his data. At the end of the day, each puppy is an individual and will behave mostly on how it’s raised.
