After a month of trouble free motoring with the Rover P6, it's time to give the car a well deserved oil and coolant change

Liking your new ramps Steve. The oil filter is in a good place, nice and easy.

Cheers mate, yeah it does make life easy when engines are thought out before they are fitted to cars 👍

Hi Steve I know that car and yes it is extremely solid,if I remember rightly it has a v8 rear diff fitted for better cruising, the buffalo interior is rare too only fitted for a short while,

@@SteveDentonClassics if you look at the position of the air filter flute it’s in a different position to other TC;s this was done for better breathing by the true engineer who previously owned that car. He was well known for racing hillman imps and a great engineer .

Oh wow, I didn't know that. I was told by Andy King the chap your on about knew his stuff with this car. Does explain why it's a good one. The plan is now to get the bodywork back to good condition 👍

Cheers Tush, yeah they are HS8's, The early Rover 2000 TC had them as originally they were Monte Carlo works rally car. They are great for power at top end, but not so good round town. Later Rover 2000 TC had smaller carbs, making it a better car low end for town use, and a more drivable car 👍

A big thank you to Steve. I started doing an oil and coolant change on my MG but I wanted to change the heater matrix at the same time, but it was only when I took the heater box out I discovered the underside and back of my heater box was rotten out! Steve saved my day after I bought a serviceable box from him on Ebay and I'm currently putting it all back together 👍 So cheers again Steve for saving my job 😂

Two sump plugs. So when some **** does it up too tight with the wrong size spanner, you have another one that will undo 👍🏻 (absolutely my sump. . . One plug is RUINED (Not by me) lol . I use the long oil filter and was told make sure has non return valve inside otherwise top of chain will run dry before oil gets up and around filter. Short filter is probably a good idea but I would still check for non return. I cringed slightly at Halfords oil can there.... but I'm sure it will be fine. The V8 engines are more delicate with oil and require a high ZDDP content. I use Rye oil as I can buy a large container of it from UK and high ZDDP. And not picking, but I would of probably stuck a hose pipe through the coolant system and blasted through the heater matrix ect. Omg I'm talking way too much here for a comment aren't i..... Sorry.... 🤣🤣 . Engine side plates...... Worth getting them off one day . They are probably full of sludge. X good idea not trying the tap on side plate. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Cheers Alex, that's some sound advise with the old beast. You're not the first to mention about the side plates, a good friend of mine Brian who does the membership for the P6 Owners Club said about it. I really need to get his P6 back on the road at some point, it's one of the finest P6's out there👍

There is some personal reasons for it, and it's not for me to say. I've know Brian for a very long time, and his pretty much to blame for me getting a P6. Only a few weeks ago I got his Triumph TR4 going after a long hibernation. Hopefully soon you'll see Vanessa the Rover back up and running 👍

Hi Steve . Forgot you had this 😆😆 I wonder if that slightly lower plug is magnetic ? So has the GT gone ? Or one of the others ? Or maybe none ! Happy motoring !

Could be, I'm not sure. Sadly the B was broken up for parts as it just wasn't worth restoring. It was up for sale for a long time, but no one wanted it. I came to the conclusion, I'm never going to do it with the Spitfire needed work to put right the B just had to go 👍

Nice video as always. Would have been quite handful to tell us what oil you used. Idle seems a bit high, or is that me? Cheers from Belgium 🇧🇪
@SteveDentonClassics
@SteveDentonClassics 2 года назад
Yes, I don't like to say what oil I use, other than it's 20W50, otherwise you get into the oil debate. Some like Comma, some like Castrol, some like Penrite and so on and so on

I'd missed the fact that you had picked up a p6. I'd be interested to see how you get on with it. I bet its thirsty as a daily driver? Fun though! What was wrong with the B that meant it needed to be dismantled?.. shame to lose another after you had invested a fair bit in it.

It's good on fuel on a long run, but for round town it does drink. Sadly the B was just too rotten for me to want to continue with. It was up for sale for 6 months for not much money, but no one wanted it, so sadly with all the other projects on the go, and the B just being a money pit the only sensible thing to do was to break it for parts. Sad I know, and it was a hard decision to make, but sometime you've just got to do what you've got to do 👍

Does yours have an oil cooler In the bottom of the radiator. My tc does but has a leaky pipe.

Afraid not, it just has a normal coolant radiator with an expansion tank 👍

You didn’t explain which oil you used and why… quite important with older cars especially since more traditional oils are hard to get easily these days…
@SteveDentonClassics
@SteveDentonClassics 2 года назад
To be honest I don't like getting into the oil debate. As I'm sure you are more than aware most classics we're built to run on 20W50 mineral oil. However if I start saying I use a certain brand someone will say they use another. Then if I say to use something like Penrites 20W60 other people will say other things. So rather than go down that path, I'd rather just say I'm doing an oil change 👍
