Proud to see RNZN matelots ! If you look closely you will find that the only aboriginal peoples never totally subjugated by the Brits were the Maoris. The evidence is the treaty of Waitangaroa a treaty of EQUALS . I can still do a passable Haka given enough beer! Familial greetings from an old matelot from the RCN!
I have never seen anything like this. The only time the US ever used anything Indian related was during WWII as code talkers. Only one tribe though. Not all of them. We just about killed all of our natives. Glad to see some country found peace with its natives.
Great to see ALL the cadets participating in 'their' haka....it means UNITY, no matter what colour or creed they may be... If only some of these ignorant people who place comments can understand that...durrgghh..
Well in a traditional haka the women don't do the stomping or harsh slapping; that's what the men do. If you watch other haka videos with mixed genders, the women stand still in the middle and do mild slapping whilst standing straight whilst the men form around them and do the harsh stamping and slapping as well as the intense facial expressions.
Do a search on youtube for "Haka by NZ Police" guys. The white guy in there does a great job! This thing is something about liking. If you do it then do it with interest and respect for other cultures and their traditions.
and this is WHY I will always respect a certain kind of Pakeha from Aotearoa. In Hawaii you think we would have Pakeha doing anything remotely Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian)? FAT CHANCE. America has missed the boat completely on certain things and respecting indigenous culture is ONE OF THEM.
@RKGOLF yup tru dat!!its al about showin passion & mana 4 wea u kame from!!& it is a testament 2 our maori culture dat da pakeha people kan also show that & respect!!shot fullaz!
Kiwis are fortunate to have a native warrior tradition and even more fortunate that it is being nurtured. Many "civilized" countries have suppressed and ridiculed their warrior culture into non-existence and then wonder why each generation of children seem to get weaker and weaker.
Have to say if it is the first public showing they should have put in a few more hours practice and put the guys that have mana, passion and technique in the front. good on them but you have to sell the haka and you can't do that with guys going through the motions. the two guys in the front looked like they were massaging their chests, they should have been pounding shit out of themselves. 6/10
i am not scared.... all blacks rugby team should be the navy..... and pretty much everything else that involves physical toughness.... some ppl there WERE DANCING ffs.... so fierce!
@adflwf No you wouln't be able to crush us, NZ has a natural abundance of resources to survive. You would find this place a nightmare, worse than vietnam. NZ has a warrior culture steep in a thousand years of non stop warfare.
wasnt the haka used to scare away the enemy? or something like that? so im guessing uhmm........whenever the military does a haka theyre getting ready to shoot our face off and shove our face on a huge fork?
a haka is an anthem. its purpose is to inspire and encourage. contrary to most people's idea of haka, it is not necessarily done when being warlike. I have been present at funerals (tangi) where haka has been done, and at weddings also. it is an anthem. still if someone wishes to shoot your face off and shove your face onto a huge fork, (boy, you might need therapy) no reason why they cant do a haka !!
What the? Have you even taken two seconds too look up anything about the NZ Navy? Qulaity not quantity my friend that's something you Americans have never learned
does anybody know why white kiwis do a traditional indigenous war dance??!!! and why do the indigenous teach and allow this?? traditional english war dance was rows of army whith muskets shotting the shit out of all indigenous people of all places. in australia the aboriginal's dont take too well to a buch of whites doing traditional dance!!! Considering history and all that. wtf?????
Well anyone from Newzealand..born here or raised here is allowed to do the haka..in a way the haka is one thing that unites all of our dif ethnicities because we are all kiwis "tangata whenua"...for many there are alot of emotional ties aswell.. we grow up watching our rugby teams do the haka all our lives..
shanelleh danielle NZ has figured it out, while up here in the US we are still chasing this concept called 'Diversity', you all down there realized it is 'UNITY' that truly brings us together. New Zealand warriors during WWII were among the most highly decorated in WWII... and NOT because of the color of their skin or who their grandfathers were. Best to you all.
+travisanthony11 because those whites are NEW ZEALANDERS. The haka belongs to the Pacific Islanders, which New Zealand is a great part of. These white people are NOT ENGLISH, NOT EUROPEAN and NOT AUSTRALIAN. They are all NEW ZEALANDERS, as native as the Maori in all aspects apart from ancestry.
