In our previous episode we finally managed to get to the starting point of our dream. The North Cape. We had a wonderful day of driving that ended with us crashing into a river because a bridge was missing.

I got something in my eye while watching this, and they went all watery.... You may think you stuffed up having that accident but I really think the opposite. I mean accidents do happen. The fact you could call emergency services and had the co-ordinates. The fact you were both wearing protective gear. The fact you didn't panic. Kudos to you both for showing others the right way to go adventure riding.

All my compassion for the accident and a trip cut short... but I’d like to play the old-timer ok-boomer here. They broke 2 rules of long-distance motorcycling in remote areas: 1) Never ride at a speed that doesn’t allow you to identify a danger and stop within your visual field. 2) Never ride so close to a partner that you may run into them if they crash. These are kind of golden rules. The first one, I understand, may not always prevent a crash, especially if the danger is moving or completely invisible (animal, falling rocks, hidden trench in the dust). But the second should always be followed. Both of them in the river!? They were lucky to be within cell phone range and in a rich country that can dispatch a chopper within minutes. But imagine crashing like this in a remote corner of Africa.
@toxicteabaging
@toxicteabaging 3 года назад
Had you watched the follow-up video you would know that Pia was riding in front with a good distance, Kenneth didn't even see her fall in and as she was shocked as to what had happened after initially falling in she never said anything on the intercom, so Kenneth wasn't warned and went straight in as well, so you can cross off nr2 from your ok-boomer list for these two riders at least.

I get the feeling that someone thinks they are in the US. Not many EU cit8zens I know carry insurance while riding in the EU. Taxpayers in EU are already paying for medical coverage as part of normal life. 🙄

I did watch the video very carefully (especially at time mark 12:25). My girlfriend and I also crossed Africa north to south and the Americas south to north, with thousand of kilometers on dirt roads, on two motorcycles, and I don’t see a set of circumstances that would have caused us to crash at the same spot, in the middle of nowhere, almost running into each other, due to a 5-meter wide obstacle across the road. Some basic laws of long-distance motorcycling have been breached here. They were riding too close and/or too fast for the terrain.

This was hard to watch, even though we knew what was coming. You were lucky in this unlucky event, it could have been far worse. I would have probably ridden into it myself. They should put a sign there. Are you using iOverlander? Was there no comments on the trail by other users? When you do off-road, trail conditions can change in a day. Always talk to locals or check online communities before you take the trail, especially in Africa where you are going, roads can disappear instantly. This cut-off was there a long time from the looks, the police knew to take the side path but for any stranger it is a deathtrap. Like Pia said, you could have not stopped that fast on normal riding speed. The footage before was amazing. Your filming skills have improved so much, same with editing. Great and fast service by rescue team! Again, I wish you a great recovery.

I am so sorry for your accident, but i feel, everything will be ok ;) My personal opinion is that your off road skills are a little bit over estimated, and the bikes doesn't help you to ride more safely. I saw that from the video with the training. After seeing you falling such a lot of times i could't encourage you as others do, because i think is a false sensation that the Tenere 700 is a well suited bike for you. When you are riding in off road you have to be careful and look forward, and also you have to keep a safe distance between riders. Unfortunately, this time you learned in the most hardest way. Anyway, get well soon, and keep riding !!!
@RidetheBean
@RidetheBean 4 года назад
Thank you 🙂 I get what you are saying. But I have to disagree a bit. Yes it is a big bike, but she has had a lot of training on it. The videos we've made have been from our training sessions when we've tested our skills, but we've had a lot of training in between as well. the falls almost never happens when riding, mostly when almost standing still. But she has improved a lot in that area too. This did not happen because of skill level. It was a freak accident that happened because of a combination of many factors. Mostly that we both truly did not see the gap. To us it looked like the road kept going until it was too late. We did feel like we were in control and did not ride too fast. We did have space between us and rode on each side of the road. I came several seconds after Pia and still managed to crash because I thought I could stop when I saw her fall, but there was no place to stop after the loose gravel. But you are right. We did learn a lot from this and we were very lucky to both survive. It was a close call for a while. Now we are on the mend, but will need a few months to recover before we can continue the trip 😛🏍

@Transyvanian Rider, you are talking utter nonsense. I've been riding since 1980, and accidents like this happen very easily as we saw, and are sometimes unavoidable, unfortunately. There was no way of seeing that gap over the river until they were falling into it, and no signs to warn a rider approaching on what they thought was an unbroken trail. They had no chance or time to react. The T7 is perfectly suited to these two, as any of their past videos will show you, and their riding skills are more than capable.
@transylvanianrider
@transylvanianrider 3 года назад
@@tonebonetones Maybe i talk utter nonsense to you, but this is my personal opinion, as i said... Starting such a long adventure ride with a Tenere 700 after less than a year from getting the motorcycle license, is not the best option, if you ask me. Following your logic, all motorcyclists on that road should have fallen in that river. Just watch their riding skills: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wiZhF5iFy9g.html I am 100% emphatic with them, and also i wish them fast recovery and safe further rides !

Or simple common sense to slow down and do not ride up anyones ass while on a heavy overpacked overpowered bike riding in wet conditions, all the while trying to make a video. People fall off the 3000ft cliff at the Grand Canyon in Arizona often doing the same thing not paying attention while shooting with their camera, Sad too, especially after someone told them either to be careful or don't be so careless. Still they take chances or are to stubborn to simply listen and take heed. Lost a few friends on motos in the 60 years i've ridden, most from going too fast & were inexperienced riders on a bike with too much power, also the male ego & its imaginary super power will often lead to humbling trouble.

Kenneth & Pia.. I'm so sorry for you both.. it's looks like you were on such a great start to your adventure. So Glad you are both ok and on the mend .. wishing you a speedy recovery. This was a very unfortunate accident.. and although it is hard to watch.. thank you for sharing this with the riding community. It's a prime example of the hidden dangers of adventure riding we so easily forget cruising along on a beautiful flowing track.. Pia.. Kenneth was so fortunate to have had you there.. Your medical training.. staying calm in the moment.. your quick assessment of how serious the situation, very possibly saved his life. I've followed Lyndon Poskitt (Races to Places) for years ..and he just crashed out of nowhere.. your video played after that. As I have been gearing up to go back and ride 1,000 miles of California desert.. as a person that always rides solo I have reassessed my emergency protocols after watching these. It's so easy to let our guard down to the real dangers.. although I'm very cautious because I always ride alone.. I too am guilty. I think we can all learn from this.. it's easy to "Arm Chair" analyze.. watch the video and think "this wouldn't happen to me.. I'm a Pro rider, this is an easy track, I've ridden around the world etc.." watching an outstanding rider like Lyndon cruising down a nice road blow a front tire and instantly go down hard puts it all in perspective. More advanced riders would most likely have been riding a lot faster and might have faced more serious injuries than yours hitting that embankment at higher speeds. It's common in the desert to have a washout across the track out of nowhere.. myself, even after numerous times almost going over the bars, being extremely cautious studying every inch of the terrain ... you still get pitched. It happens.. in the desert you expect it.. looking at that track.. it's understandable it wasn't quite on your radar. Many of us can learn from your response and how you handled the situation. Being prepared to give coordinates, identifying the seriousness of the injuries, and relaying to the authorities crucial information is something that all of us need to think about .. are we really prepared to give information under distress..? We need to have those protocols in place.. it's easier to implement a plan than to try and figure it out in the moment. You did a great job.. !!! One tip I would say .. especially as a solo rider.. many ride with their Spot, In-reach, etc.. on their bikes.. as you went back to activate them.. how often are you with your bike when you go down? If your bikes went over an embankment? Even at slow speeds you are separated from your bike .. ALWAYS carry your Spot/InReach device on your shoulder strap of your backpack.. so if you become incapacitated they can find you. A grim subject, but this is something adventure riders need to prepare for. Thank you .. As I said we all can learn from this.. I'm looking at my own procedures and I do fall short.. I've gotten complacent.. I have enough tools to rebuild the bike but.. have left my med kit at home several times because of limited space.. I feel embarrassed wearing FULL body armor and a neck brace riding routes like the TET .. yet every time I've broken bones it's not screaming along, or doing hard enduro.. it's cruising along least expected.. After seeing this... I'm going to work on my emergency procedures and continue to embarrass myself with full riding gear. I'm so sorry for your misfortune .. following up on the comments I see you are on the mend and glad your anticipating getting back on your adventure. I look forward to seeing your updates. Thank you again for sharing.. wishing you all the best in all your endeavors.

Thank you 😊 Yeah we were lucky it didn't end up being worse 🙂 We have always through about this things happening, but when it happens to you it is always a surprise. We did learn a lot from this ourselves. Hopefully someone else can also take away some lessons 🙂 Pia absolutely saved my life. Without rescue I would have bled to death. Races to Places is a great series! We are also filling him 🙂 The sounds like a great adventure! Hope you'll be safe, and I'm glad you took something away from the video 🙂 We realised how important it is to slow down before tricky sections and especially how important it is to have an emergency beacon. We will invest in Garmin InReach before we continue. I think we are all guilty of letting our guard down some times. I don't feel we did that in this situation tho as we were continually communication and informing each other. We just could not see the gap before it was too late. We have never ridden in the desert, but were really looking forward to riding in the Sahara next year. This road we were on was an old main road and is part of the Trans Euro trail so we really did not expect a bridge missing without any signs. But I guess that is our fault for not expecting it. Pia felt she should have been even clearer. She knew in her head what to do, but her brain froze a bit when 113 picked up. But she quickly organised her thoughts and was able to be very clear and specific. I owe her my life. It is better to be a bit embarrassed and safe rather than to be unsafe and look cool 😝 We are lucky we are able to heal and continue our trip. It will take a lot of time and hard work, but we'll do our best and try to keep making videos 🙂

Might be the bravest thing I've seen. The way you dealt with that means nothing is impossible for you two now. And very brave to show it to us all. It has made me think and reassess my own kit and travel. Do I now need a chest protector? Never had one before. Might do now. And I have downloaded what3words, an app which means getting a fix on your position is always easy , especially if the GPS is not reachable. So thank you for making me think. Even though I already knew this has happened it was very difficult to watch, perhaps more so. Great to know you are both on the mend. Next year continue, when hopefully we can all travel more than we have been able this year. You have just proved that you have to seize the day because you never know.... Good Times await. Happy future travels and best wishes.

Thank you 😊 that means a lot! And thank you for being with us for so long We really appreciate it, and it is because of you guys we were able to film it. We want to be open an honest and share what is actually going on, not just the happy moments, and your feedback keeps us motivated 🙂 We hare happy that you got something useful out of this video. I have also reassessed the gear I will use in the future. I will absolutely buy a chest plate and something to protect my stomach, because if I damage it again I probably will not make it. A GPS locator is super important and we'll get one before we leave. We were lucky to have our GPS close by. This does mean the trip will have to be postponed by at least 6 months, but as you say, hopefully we can travel a bit easier next year. Ride safe!

A chest protector can make a huge difference depending in the type of crash you have. Get one if you can and make sure you wear it.

Started out so beautiful, then the shock! I'm so sorry and what trauma for you both! Knowing that you are both recovering now made watching this bearable. And I appreciate the nugget of humor at the end "you don't look like a dead fish". I'm going to use that line. Rest and recover well, RTB!

Hehe yeah it was a day of contrast. starting out so excited at the north cape and then this... But that is part of the adventure I guess. Pia was so upset after saying that. She didn't know if I would survive and she was worried the last thing she said to me was "you don't look like a dead fish"😂

Takk for det! Vi er fremdeles ganske påvirket av ulykken, og vil nok trenge enda mer tid på å komme oss tilbake. Satser på at 2021 blir et bedre år :)

Hi Gergo! Hopefully we will be back to being our positive, energetic selves when we have recovered a bit more from this accident. For the next videos, you will see us vulnerable and afraid and down. That's also part of life. It is now six weeks since the accident, and Kenneth was just released from hospital. We still have some recovering to do but we made it :)

Thank you for your lines. I was really worry about you two. Kenneth looks really bad on the last video... What injury did he suffer? ☹️ All our love is with you guys. I would love to help you two. Maybe you can visit us in Hungary for a night later on your trip and have a good Hungarian espresso. We have a nice guest room in our house... 😉
