just another great performence by Rufus, at the fillmore, live in concert. i like this song so much better in this live set, it has a much faster pace than his studio version, and in this case, it's better.
I hate when people post comments like "19 people are idiots" when there are 19 dislikes, but I genuinely cannot fathom how this song could possibly have a single dislike, let alone 23 dislikes. Just nuts. This song is beautiful. Absolutely beautiful.
How precious. He’s actually living the song as he sings. Lost in his own world. I get the feeling it wouldn’t matter if there were no audience to hear him.
Rufus doesn’t thrive off an audience, from what I’ve experienced he isn’t fond of meeting them much either. He lives in his world when he sings, his sound checks sound like the real thing. I think he truly does go in his own world. I love him. He is truly like no other.
This was the first song and performance I ever heard from Rufus four months ago and I was absolutely captivated. I must have listened to him for a month straight. Greek Song is still my favorite of his, it's so enchanting.
This is one of my all-time favorite Rufus songs. I love the melody, the upbeat tempo and the story he is telling here. But most of all I love seeing Rufus perform it live. He always seems to enjoy playing this song in front of a live audience. Rufus is amazing.

You who were born with the sun above your shoulders You turn me on you turn me on You have to know You who were born where the sun she keeps her distance You turn me on you turn me on But so does she You who were born there where beauty is existence You turn me on you turn me Your body heals my soul You who were born where you shiver and you shudder You turn me on the girl is gone so come on Let's go All the pearls of China Fade astride a volta Don't sew beelines to anybody's hide Save your poison for a lover who is on your side One way is Rome and the other way is Mecca On either side on either side Of our motorbike One way is home and the other way is papa On either side on either side and prepared to strike. When I get back I will dream in Barnes and Noble's Oh leave me here oh leave me Where angles fear to tread When I get back I will bleed after my beating Don't leave me here don't leave me here I'm scared to death All the pearls of China Fade astride a volta Don't sew beelines to anybody's hide Save your poison for a lover who is on you side All the pearls of China Fade astride a volta Don't sew beelines to anybody's hide Save your poison for a lover who is on your side.
Ahhh memories. My safe place. When my life was beautiful. To be back there again and not be depressed and sad. To go a day without thinking of suicide.
I LOVE this song! How come this is the only video of it on youtube? It's one of my favorite songs of all time! After watching this video I kind-of sway back and forth like he does =)
@akis1972 Rufus explained this as being inspired by a trip he took to Greece. While there, he saw a handsome Greek man that he wished he could get to know. The Greek man was, however, with a woman, so Rufus was stuck with admiring him from afar.
Sorry but he is supporting a very strong voice through a full concert and uses the proper muscles and is one of the few performers I've heard who sound almost in every performance very much like their album performances. His brand of tonality is very sinus, so it is a must for him to breathe that way. He is a trained singer as am I and it is unavoidable much like Streisand's nose...you just cannot change it or you lose your sound entirely. We do not use our lungs to breathe when singing. -MG
I once heard a critic write that Andy Bell of “Erasure” sings like a warbling prairie dog." Yet I'd say Andy Bell was gifted with a sweeter, smoother tone than similar contemporaries like Niel Tennant of "The Pet Shop Boys." Rufus Wainwright was simply gifted (and cursed) with a nasal voice.
It’s supposed to be about sensuality and unrequited rapture. The tempo here sounds like he’s wearing flip flops on 5th Avenue in a rush to get to the Subway train.
i guess rufus likes the fact most of anciant greeks were gays,as alexander the great, as he his.. and he had a crush on a greek gay i think as he talks about "the handsome greek guys" in his song called "april fools". plus, the violin and women's whispers reminds greeks traditional songs ;) that's my POV :) have a nice day y'all !
How come every time I look at the comments of a Rufus video, every second post makes a reference about him being gay? If I watch a Hendrix video or a Marvin Gaye video I wouldn't expect their blackness to be an issue for just about everyone, whether or not they have a problem with it or not. It's either good on you Rufus for being gay, or else who cares if he's gay. Shouldn't the main point here be the music. It's not about trying to deny his gayness, it's about being relevant to the video.
i need the names of the 2 backupsingers. someone please help me. i saw this band like 2004-2005??? and the backup singers BLEW MY MIND. i need their names
he seems to be straining a bit here, like hes trying to sing louder than normal and having trouble with his breath. despite that, whether im just seeing things or not, it was a great performance of a great song.
