That's right, I ran a 50 mile ultra alone! Planned out the course, took all my own nutrition and hydration, no pacers, no crew, just me against the miles. Here I'll show you the good, the bad, and the ugly!

I am a total beginner and just started running long distance at age 46. I ran a solo marathon on Saturday. I am working up to a 50k ultra. I am in love with ultra running and am so inspired with people like Jim Walmsley, Courtney Dauwalter and Zach Miller. Six months ago I was overweight and not exercising. I've turned it all around. I went from 215 pounds down to 170 and now I'm in the best shape of my life. I still have work to do on my running but I am so happy now. When I completed the solo marathon I broke down in tears because it has been a major goal of mine for the last 6 months.

Alright!,...we got a club going. My first and only marathon was myself and my country roads in Whaleyville, Virginia. I am a social person, but I do not like running with people. There it is... I was fifty years old...I planned it for weeks (really months) and got started at oh dark thirty. It took me over six hours and I absolutely loved it. Now I am back to running (I turn sixty this Spring), and with the psychological hurdle in hand, I am planning another one this 'Fall. Let's hit the road, guys and girls. Let's go....

I run tons of ultras, and 99% of them are by myself. It was great to see you doing an ultra by yourself, as I was able to glean some wisdom out of this video for all my future runs. This is probably just me, but I start to get nervous and my stomach becomes uneasy the longer an ultra goes. I usually consume a little under twice the calories you did just in order to keep calm (and I know I weigh less than you). I especially like how you weren't afraid to take breaks. Also, talking to a camera kind of seemed uplifting, almost like there's someone to talk to periodically. I think I'll give that a shot. Thank you for the video! And for putting yourself through that for all of us to watch!
@RyanClaytonFilms
@RyanClaytonFilms 3 года назад
Thats great Jeff! The stomach thing is something I thought I'd be able to figure out, but just haven't nailed it. I've tried high intake, low, gels, no gels, etc, and the results are all over the place. Hopefully one day I'll figure it out! And yes, talking to the camera is a great way to stay motivated, good luck trying it!

Well done Ryan! It truly is hard to do a run like that when you are all alone. No encouragement, self doubts, the “why am I doing this?”, the boredom.... I confess.... I was going to do a solo, 25-30 mile run on a hot day this summer. I got 16 miles into it and quit. I quit. I could not stop the internal debate on “why are you doing this”. It is also tough when friends and family ask “ why are you doing this”. It is hard to have the mental toughness to do something that hard if you don’t have to do it. Full respect and admiration.
@RyanClaytonFilms

Congrats. The interval caloric intake updates were super helpful. It always feels weird to finish an ultra in an average location with people living their lives around you and no crowds. I’ve found those finishes very calming and self satisfying at the end. So easy to feel the quit feeling when no one but yourself is pushing you. Great work

Congratulations on completing this! Beast mode engaged for real. Doing this solo must be real good mental training for your upcoming 💯! I really like this whole doing loops and taking breaks at the car thing you got going, makes me think about scaling it back to my pityful fitness level and doing something similar to get time on feet in a less intense way then just long continuous runs.

Grats on the 50 miler! I'm so jealous as it looked like the parking lot was empty and you had the trails to yourself for the day. I live in California and all the trails are packed with ultrarunners everyday (I frequently spot Dean Karnazes on the trails). I usually get in 35-50 miles a week on the trails. I've done a bunch of ultras but l haven't done one this year. I love your 10 mile loops back to the car to re-fuel and might have to do a solo ultra before the end of the year. Thanks for the great video.
@RyanClaytonFilms
@RyanClaytonFilms 3 года назад
Whoa that's pretty cool you see Dean out there! Yeah the place I went is a state park so you either have a pass or pay per day to get it. That cuts down on some of the crowding on the trails and I went on a Friday so that helped too. Good luck getting your solo ultra done this year!!

Good on you dude! I know what it's like to run and ultra by yourself. It can be hard. For most of my ultras I run by myself - because I'm usually last ;-) I've also done 4 ultras in 4 weeks in July by myself. The last one was pretty tough. (taking the wrong turn in the dark didn't help) I think since it wasn't a race, and you weren't pushing hard, just out running long for the hell of it, your body wasn't hammered like it would be in a race. So maybe that's why your recovery is going so well. For my last ultra race I was super chilled and really just relaxed into it, and the next day I was fine, as if I'd just been out for a 20 or 30 km run. So I think that's the key - just take it easy and enjoy the day. Looking forward to your next vid ;-)

That is a great idea, probably much safer to do more aid stations than i had. Point to Point definitely makes it a lot more necessary to have a crew. good luck as you get out there and crush it!!

Great job out there! Having done a solo 50 miler back in April last year (yes, the one I had planned was cancelled - thank you Covid! :( ) I can completely relate to everything you said and felt here. I miss those proper race day vibes. Congrats on pushing through to the finish :)

Awesome video. Definitely inspiring. I got my first 50 miler in the last two days of February 2020, right before the pandemic shut things down. Planned a solo 50k (my 4th) with plenty of elevation gain, but I keep procrastinating. I think your video will push me to do it. Thanks so much for the video and congrats on that solo 50 miler, 2020 style! That's the way to do it.

Great job!! Enjoyed watching this video. No way could I have had that much gatorade, lol. This fall was supposed to be my first 50. Got injured so it kind of worked out. Can't wait to run it next year though!! Looking forward to the 100 miler.

Thank you for taking us on a journey with you. My goal is to run 50 miles next year. I've only ever done 50km's solo. I'd like to find an actual race to do my 50 miler in and I'm super excited for when that time comes. Well done!

Lumberjack in Port Gamble Wa. they have 50 mile, 100k and 100 miler. 12.5 mile loops in the woods. very technical too me. used to be held second week in april now it's held in june. i think lumberjack was two weekends ago. 30 hour limit. pretty generous but there are some mud bogs that will eat your shoe/shoes if you're not careful. I've never completed the 50 miler. the loop is 12.5 miles . lots of vertical. i can handle the uphills, but the downhills killed my IT bands. It's my goal to eventually finish the 50 miler just once. I saw on FB that even experienced ultra runners had a hard time this last time. made me feel not so bad for never completing. great aid stations. I think you'd like it. very challenging.

Dude this is awesome, as a fellow ultra runner, events have been sparse as you know. I managed to do the Mogollon Monster 105k recently (40 runners max) and it was amazing to get back out with aid stations and people! But otherwise my year has been solo. Well done!!!!

Great job Ryan! Your video was well shot and put together. Also very inspirational. I am a fellow Hoosier and I've hiked all those trails at Prophetstown SP. Looks like you had a beautiful day to accomplish your solo 50. I just ran my first ultra earlier this year...the GE 40 up at Chain o' Lakes SP and because of COVID had to do it solo. I've been considering a solo 50 at my home park in Versailles. Your video has definitely added to my motivation! Blessings to you in your future endeavors...

Yeah most of my runs are solo, but it is so interesting how much energy you get from seeing other people running. And coming up to an aid station having someone say you look great, lol, it all really does make a difference!

Congrats!! I can't even imagine the mental struggle to keep going alone, great job. I've been blessed with hiking buddies who match my pace, don't complain, and make me laugh constantly, so I have a tough time without that companionship on long hikes/ runs. I'm going to have to go back and binge your channel before your 100. As for the headache, I know people have mentioned calories, but I get 2-3 day headaches if I let myself get into a calorie deficit at any time. Happy recovery!!

I'll test it and get back to you.

@@RyanClaytonFilms I personally thought that you could have boosted calories on the run, not just after it....your vid showed just under 2000 calories by way of Gels, taken on the run...can't recall the cals you used on the run, or that day but I would assume way more than 2000, thus the cal def. Great run though, subscribed and going through your library!

Awesome video! Great job on completing a solo 50 mile! I am new to Ultra running and for most of my life I have had a strong dislike with running.... But on October 10th, 2020 I will be participating in my first 50 mile race in Kansas. I appreciate how you videoed the parts of your run were you were struggling, walking, sitting, etc. I am aiming to do a similar game plan as yours with nutrition, walking, etc but with a lot more walking than you! Thanks again for sharing!
