I still can't believe it... It is impossible... My drum and lyrics guru is dead😥😥😥I cry and I'm in mourning😪😪😪Condolence for the family, friends and all fans of Rush😓😓😓R.I.P Neil... My Brother🧡🧡🧡
Same here. I haven't tried playing them yet after hearing about Neil. I know I won't make it to far in before losing it. These guys are why I even pick up a bass. Music and the possibilities of what it could be changed when I heard them for the first time.
@Eric I didn't get to see them live. I had the chance in 2012 and I messed up. They played in Indianapolis. I was living just south of there. I know Alex and Ged will do something together. It'll be awesome but bitter sweet without Neil. Just have to patiently wait. I wonder what other collaborations they will do in the future.
@EricI'm 57 and my favorite band since 1974 and thank God got to see them over 40 times... Neil God bless you and now your playing for everyone in Heaven..R.I. P. and thank you for your great performances...😟
Alex always said he played a certain way and used open chords to give the illusion that there’s more than one guitar playing because of how important a full sound is in a 3 piece band. Very brilliant and an absolute freakish player.
Must MUST MUST agree! He has NEVER gotten his due among the best! But after 43 years of them being my favorite band, I think I realize that they didn't care about their individual standing. They just wanted to be the TIGHTEST and BEST they could be! Off of each other. God bless them!!
There's Neil ........................................................................................................................................................................................... then there's #2,3,4 etc
When asked in an interview, Alex said Natural Science was a favorite Rush song to play but was also extremely demanding and difficult to play consistently.
Why do people keep saying this? Hes in a hugely successful rock band where there’s no other guitarist so obviously hes an important part. Many famous guitarists have praised him many times. Hes in a shit ton of guitar magazines and websites. He has guitar and amp sponsores. Idk where this idea that he’s underrated comes from.
Someone i would say is legit underrated is omar rodriguez lopes from mars volta, who alex and neil were a fan of. He rarely gets talked about. Absolutely incredible guitarist.
Neil never crossed "the line" of his drum kit and left that space for Geddy and Alex to do their thing. You can tell these guys were good friends in addition to band mates...
This is a perfect Rush song. Alex's guitar is at a frenetic pace, the drums are insane, you got time signature changes, and Geddy's voice and bass holding it all together. With most of your biggest pop bands, it's not that they WON'T do this......they CAN'T do this....not on their best day.
This is the ultimate Rush song. Lyrics, Guitar, Bass, and Vocals. This is also possibly the best live performance of this song I have seen and I've seen them 14 times. Perhaps its because they are in their homeland. I LOVE THESE GUYS!! I'm 55, and they were the soundtrack of my life. Lets get it together ppl and LOVE one another. They surely loved us!!
Indeed, look at what's going on now..the truth is a horrible hateful thing, according to those who presume to do our thinking for us(MSM)..as people who speak the truth are also horrible hateful people,to be demonised and thrown out of their jobs and homes...We are now in a war,my friend.
90's = Neil at his peak. He had perfected his art while still being young or healthy enough to put a ridiculous amount of power behind his drumming. It baffles me how a kit could survive an entire tour with Peart or Bonham behind it. Two of the hardest hitters in drumming.
I’ve seen a video where he put the bass pedal through the drum skin. That should be impossible. They are designed very carefully and I can assure you that an incredible amount of years and research went into drums we know today. I met the man credited for developing them at my daughter’s music school in Boston. It is the oldest music school in America. How I would have loved to see the look on that man’s face the moment Neil’s pedal went through that bass drum.
I had the pleasure of seeing this in person once. When I had listened to the album, I assumed this was a studio piece meaning they don't perform live. At the beginning of the song I thought, Oh can't believe they are attempting this! Boy was I wrong. They flew through the song as if they could be holding a phone conversation while playing their parts. They were that good and prepared. It. Was. Awesome!!
I saw this at the Spirit of Airwaves recording, the bootleg concert recording front row February 13th in St. Louis. Sat 15 away from Geddy and it was SO epic. The set list was their best ever and all 3 were as good as they could ever be. Those 4 front row tickets cost me 35 dollars with a 50 cent handling charge per ticket. I got those tickets by being the first caller to reach Dial-Tix when lines opened at 10am. This would not have happened if not for my mom letting me skip school to do so. By far my best concert ever
Life and Death is a mystery. Just over a month after this concert Neil’s daughter will be killed in a car accident and his wife would be gone within a year. And now he is gone. Thanks for all the great stories that inspired the music Neil. RIP
"wheels within wheels... a spiral array... a pattern so grand and complex..." p.s. was the first tour they performed it live?? If I Recall Correctly ... they didn't used to perform it live just after "Permanent Waves" 'cuz it was a bit too complicated...
@@SpotWorksLNC Indeed. He was a brilliant man, however tragedy no doubt made him a much deeper (wiser/compassionate) man because of it. Those two don't often go together.
I love how Neil plays the entire first section in traditional grip, seemingly just becuase he can. Rest in peace, one of the greatest to ever pick up a pair of sticks
This must be the ultimate prog metal song. Not sure Rush have ever bettered this, but then who has? The stunning power of it, the contrasts, the seamless shifting between weird time signatures, and of course the portentous, rather alienated lyric, all add up to something greater than the sum of its parts.
Simply amazing, I’m so glad I discovered this amazing group of guys. The fact that 3 people can get this amount of sound is incredible. I don’t think I’ll ever discover a band that top this.
Chris, I also must have my "daily" RUSH !!! I saw 22 live shows over the years, starting with the Vapor Trails tour and would have preffered 122. I discovered Rush a bit late though... :-(
I'm the same way. Gotta have my daily dose of RUSH. Since Neil's passing, I've been through their catalog multiple times. IMO, they're the best band ever! All 3 guys, amazing musicians! RIP Neil....
Ryan Haydock a wee too laid back compared to the Permanent Waves/MP era though! I've heard the legendary St Louis 80 Superstars of Rock show/bootleg and back then Natural Science had an F'ing mind of its own😯😯😯 they could barely control & contain the damn thing💗😎💗
@@johnIZaUWL that's when I was front row in front of Geddy, the first third night. I was one of the first 25 people to get tickets to the Dec 13th show I believe it was but they sold out so quick they booked another then another, just so happened Kiel was available for 3 nights and they sold em all out. Geddy was yelling at us in the front rows, you guys are the originals, you'll get our best. Talk about full filling a promise or statement. That and Aftk weremy best concerts ever. Every song a monster
I was at this very show with my girlfriend (now wife) - it was her first exposure to Rush (my first time live). Was totally blown away at the sound these 3 guys made! This was a show beyond anything we had seen prior, and serves as near tops of anything since! Seeing 2112 in entirety that night was something special, so was this song...The entire setlist, mixed with the atmosphere of the night (warm summer breeze coming off of Lake Ontario, the laser lights as the sun went down, the clouds of pot smoke, and these hometown boys) made for an experience like no other!!
Lucky you! The more I see of this show, the more I hope that someday they'll release a DVD of the entire show. Although it's hard to be definitive on a band who were such unrelenting perfectionists, I don't think they ever looked or sounded better. Not sure why it is coming out in bits and pieces. I believe the first half hour or so was a bonus on the R40 boxset, and then a couple more songs were on the bonus bonus R40 disc. Don't get me started on the R40 box, which I never bought, because it was asking a lot of those of us who already owned the other DVD's, to buy them again for the sake of a single bonus disc. And then I can only imagine the feelings of those fans who forked out for the R40, only to find out that there was a bonus bonus disc, which they didn't get unless they ordered it from the Backstage club. But then, I might get started......... oops too late.
I don’t know when exactly they excised the verse (and added extra “wheels within wheels”) but this arrangement was standard for years before and evermore after.
@@paulsikes3515 This tour (TFE) was the first time they changed the arrangement, it was the first tour Natural Science was played since 1981. I don’t mind it but part of me really misses the “art as expression” verse with the guitar solo.
Alex Lifeson ONLY SEEMS to be Under rated, BECAUSE HE IS PLAYING ALONG SIDE THE WORLDS BEST DRUMMER AND PROBABLY THE BEST ROCK BASSIST EVER !!! PS He is pretty good despite very bad arthritis problems in hands !!!!! Give it up for the best all around ROCK GUITARIST of all time !!!
Eddie Van Halen said when asked "What does it feel like to be the top Guitarist?" He replied, " I do not know, ask Alex Liefeson!!!" True story as reported by Rolling Stone Mag
FUCK YES! MY GUITAR HERO, and the reason i can play ANYTHING at all today.... Along with Elliot Easton and a pile of other killer players ... criminally underrated.
First time I ever heard Rush was around 1977/8 the album "A Farewell to Kings" and Closer to the Heart was a 12 inch single released here in the UK(still have it), anyway I am now 62 yrs old and that was me totally hooked 43 years ago. Just pure unbelievable musicianship from these 3 Canadians. The Professor Neil Peart will be very sorely missed by the great family of Rush fans but we will never forget what this man meant to us all. Thank you for the incredible lyrics Sir.
This is one of my favorite Rush songs. I remember hearing that Rush was going to play a song on the T4E tour that they had never played live. When my friend and I were on our way to the show, I told him if they played Natural Science it would make my life! When the song started, I almost didn't even recognize it because it shocked me to hear it live. What a great night that was and what a great show.
They also played it on Snakes & Arrows tour in 2007/2008. (Was) Always pumped to see it live. Awesome to see it and Jacob's Ladder on R40. It was definitely a high point of my life.
This song, live and original, gives me chills every time I hear the opening verse with the full band. "Wheels within Wheels in a spiral array, a pattern so grand and complex. Time after time, we lose sight of our way, our causes can't see their effects..."
The most epic band, playing their most epic song. A band like Rush only comes along once in a Millennium...... Thank You Universe for aligning all the stars at the perfect time for these 3 Masters to meet
All I can say is , "THANK YOU, Alex, Geddy, Neil for ALL the music and memories!! Was lucky enough to see them with friends and then my kids at least 5 times and was stoked to know this song was included in one of those concerts!! What a CLASS act!! Happiness in your quieter days ahead and thank you guys again!!!
Perhaps their greatest live performance. Certainly my favorite. No one comes close and never will. Thank you Rush for all the great songs. They have meant so much to so many.
All you need to do is listen to RUSH often, Loud, and with a friend. Share Rush with everyone when possible. Rest In Peace Professor. Stay strong Alex, Geddy. Love ya all. Peace
Preach, bruther! I came to this song a bit late, I'm not shy to admit. Full appreciation did not bloom until I heard it live. I believe that must have been Snakes & Arrows leg 2 in 2008.
A Geddy Lee one of the most wonderful people you could possibly meet.H befriended a brother of mine, who was in poor health, and Geddy made his life so much enjoyable
Sorry but you are wrong...Neils daughter was killed on my frikn birthday of all days..6-20...so Neil was dealing with that tragic loss for a week and a half..unfortunately
It's tough seeing Neil playing with his arm strapped up. A sign of much worse things to come. It didn't affect his playing here, though, because he refused to let it, but man, he must have been in agony after a full gig. Much love and respect, boys. ♥♥(♥).
40 days before Neil's life was turned upside down. Sad he's gone now. I cherish every concert of theirs I've been to, and wish there would have been more. Best group of guys, best musicians and artists in rock and roll.
nEIL pEART the greatest drummer, lyricist, and creative artist in our times. Ya know I can really sympathize with Neil when he told the band he just didn't have the energy to do it anymore because he was battling cancer and being a drummer takes alot more physical energy than the rest of the band needed on an almost daily basis. RIP PROFFESSOR
Can I give that 100 thumbs up?! I had the pleasure of seeing them play this song when they came to Nashville on this tour which was sometime in the Summer of 1997. Of course this was also the tour where they played the whole first side of 2112! Not just the overture and the Temples of Syrinx but the whole enchilada!! Thank you Rush!!!
Saw them 3 times in the Northeast on this tour. Nailed this song each show. If that doesn't scream the extent of their talent, you either don't know what it takes to play it or you are deaf.
In over 50 concerts I've seen, my very favorite moment of them all was this song, 1981, the fog machine was full blast with the magenta and green colored lights, and Alex Lifeson playing the 2nd guitar solo with his head cocked slightly to one side surrounded by the curling fog all lit up by spotlights, in his red dinner jacket, playing his blonde ES-345. That does it for me.
This song is from Rush's very best album. Every song is good. Its such a perfect combination of strong guitar riffs, excellent songs, perfectly produced. Its that perfect combination of early Rush meets "pop" Rush.
Picking a best album from Rush is like picking a favorite food...:)...Permanent Waves is brilliant, true... but, Caress of Steel, 2112, Hemispheres, Farewell to kings ( my favorite), Moving Pictures or Signals are no less great...:)
My favorite Rush album is 2112FarewellToKingsHemispheresPermanentWavesMovingPicturesSignalsGraceUnderPressureCounterpartsSnakesAndArrowsClockworkAngels. My 2nd favorite Rush album is RushFlyByNightCaressOfSteelPowerWindowsHoldYourFirePrestoRollTheBonesTestForEchoVaporTrails
Took my wife to this show. It was her first “live” RUSH. Blew her away! Molson Amphitheater in Toronto, same place I took her to for Supertramp and Floyd.
I sat next to Lerxst's family - the kid next to me had a college recommendation from Alex's father he said - was amazing - his Mom and Dad were like 4 seats from me - lol
it says 66 people dislike this.. ha.. what gives with that? Rush is so technical.. maybe, thats part of their dislike, its hard for some people to step out of their comfort zone.. They don't understand this "Expertise"
Not true. Listened to rush with my daughters. One day a limo showed up, unannounced. My youngest, 19 at the time, got out and ran into the house with a ticket to the show at ACC (Toronto). Nice surprise!
Wow! Lerxst...One of the greatest axmen in the history of music! Thanks for the killer upload! I was 37 when this was filmed...I had 20 years of Rush under my belt...:)
I am going to the Austin, and Dallas shows on the 16th, and 18th, respectively. I would be so freakin happy if they played this song at even one of those venues!! Both would be a gift from the Gods of Willowdale!
Storytime. Back when I was in high school, in my Canadian Literature class, I was given an assignment to give a speech about a Canadian poet of my choice including a biography, a poem and an analyzation of the poem. I chose Neil Peart (idea stolen from Sebastian Bach). I used this song as the poem bringing a boom box to play it and making photocopies of the lyrics handing them out to the class. After everyone gave their speech, we were given a quiz on all the speeches given. The question about Neil Peart on the quiz was the most correctly answered. The only person that answered it wrong was absent during my speech.
Lol, I did the same exact thing with Hemispheres in English class in 1986 when studying mythology. I talked the teacher into having the class listen to the whole first side. It was beyond most of the class but it is a great memory.
That's a pretty cool project. I once recited lyrics to a rush tune at an open mic night at few years back. Only one person in the audience recognized it. Still cool none the less.
Permanent Waves was the first album I heard of Rush. A little late. But what do you do when you are 15 years old in 1980 with no INTERNET!! haha! Never looked back!!
Me too, only that I was 16, and had the opportunity to buy on a flea market rush first or permanent waves. Thank to mighty universe I picked the second.
Myself as well, I was 15 and saw the album cover and thought it was cool. So I bought the cassette along with Scorpions Love Drive and life was complete for awhile
