yeah, that's a bit funny! russians watch english video, series, films, interviews a lot. even if the video has russian subtitles, we still hear an english speach so we just copy it when we speak.

I use like in every second phrase and I'm not a native English speaker
@lissv2793
@lissv2793 4 года назад
Actually it happens naturally, cause we just kinda bring our slang into language when speaking. For example, we have a word 'teepa'(типа) which we use all the time and in English it will be 'like', 'kinda' and 'sort of'. And we have lots of words for 'you know what I'm saying', for example 'ponimaiesh'(понимаешь), 'dogonyaiesh'(догоняешь) and so on. So we kinda just translate our slang. But the funny thing is we do use lots of your slang (cause we watch eng youtubers, films, shows etc.), but we don't know what slang is considered to be 'black' for example. Or we can mix 'mate' and 'dude' and stuff like that Oh, btw, some of your slang and usual words we already use as ours, for ex. 'okay', 'lol', 'lmao', 'dead', 'fake', 'fail', 'edition', 'come on', 'fxxk up', 'make up', 'forever' and many-many more. I'm not even mentioning 'fxxk' which we use nearly as often as 'bl**t'

Since English is not my first language, I can truly say that speaking is way harder than expressing your thoughts by writing. It takes a couple of seconds to prepare your phrase, set the words in right order etc. Also it’s about the psychological part while you’re speaking with native speaker, you become kinda nervous about not making mistakes, misspellings and looking stupid in front of him. It comes with practicing and I really enjoy speaking English with others who can understand me

Actually it’s hard to estimate the level. When I was studying in new york, before I got a test, and I considered myself as upper intermediate. But according to the test I was sent in proficiency group, cause I knew grammar well. But I had lack of speaking. Imo these levels does almost nothing. There are several abilities in any language: reading writing listening speaking. You can have one of them excellent but another not so. In not native country it’s harder to develop speaking. Other options you can study by yourself. RU-vid is great thing considering listening.

You're probably not being serious, but people do overestimate the importance of colloquial stuff like that. You can easily learn it from a song or a few cursory conversations on the internet. E.g., I still recall how someone was commended on sounding "near-native" for saying "I did it for the lulz". Nobody talks like that any more, but back then it seemed cool to native speakers. They have no clue.

When I was a child, we read a poem about little boy, who can't visit school, because he's "black,". The author is russian writer Agniya Barto. All the students in the class were crying . We couldn't understand, how it is possible? Our culture are very different. It's not easy to you understand russians and for me to understand you. From me, i can tell you, that russians don't hate american people, even you believe, that you are "master of the world"☺️But we was blind, that believed to usa government. Sorry for mistakes, i didn't use a dictionary, and I learned English mor than 20 years ago.

As a native Russian, who lives in Germany, I could say that the most complicated part is switching of context! It is really hard to switch between different languages if you don't practice it on the every-day basis. I work with people from Germany, Spain and France and I have to switch German and English a lot during the day. But in the beginning it was extremely difficult.

A key difference between Russian and English grammar is that Russian is heavily dependent on word endings (cases and verb endings), but it is possible to shuffle the sentence's word order around very freely; English, on the other hand, relies on word order to mark roles in a sentence and has few grammatical endings (inflectional affixes) Examples: In English, "The dog bit the cat" ≠ "The cat bit the dog" In Russian, "Соба́ка укуси́ла кота́" = "Кота́ укуси́ла соба́ка" ≠ "Кот укуси́л соба́ку" = "Соба́ку укуси́л кот" (same meaning as the above phrases)

I’m a native english speaker from America and I keep hearing people from Russia that I meet in Riga, Estonia, etc, say “So so” or “50-50” and almost no from an English speaking country says this. The way english is spoken by Russians is not really the way we speak, it’s too formal there. It sounds so damn weird, it’s like how Drago from rocky speaks. “I crush you” or “hello my friend,” and “I must to go to store.” They keep missing the articles which is weird.

Students had to say which pictures show India and which photos show another countries. It's okay that they didn't know Indian places but they even didn't recognized pictures with Russia. They knew more American places than Russians🤦🏼‍♀️ And pupils were very surprised that there are so many beautiful and unusual places in Russia.

In 1988 I visited Moscow, Russia. Much different feel before the iron curtain fell but I was a student at the time traveling with my parents, and it's not shocking to know that many people can speak English overseas. It's just embarrassing that so many Americans don't speak other languages. If you ask me, it's pointless to start teaching sophomores in high school French or Spanish; and that's the only two languages that are available. I'm not saying that the students are stupid, I just think they listen to the lesson, Get the homework, and they are lost and have no interest. I have friends in Italy ,Germany, and France. Some have told me they have learned from a small child. I think children's mines are absolutely sponges and we teach them from little children. They can retain so much information. My grandson is 18 months, I don't speak Spanish, but if I have to sit there with him, Say the name of the cards hear what they sound like. I will do whatever I can.❤
