RV Rehab! - Fixing Up a 25' Motorhome With Family

Everybody's doing it! We jumped on a recent bandwagon and bought a 25' Fleetwood Class C Motorhome RV to have some cool family adventures in 2021. The motorhome came with some work that needed done, so this video will showcase some of the efforts we made to get it ready for our first trip. This was our first time buying an RV and we have no idea what we're doing.

We did similar when our kids were small, toured the uk. As i drove, my wife sat next the fridge, making sandwiches for the kids. Happy days, the kids still talk about it. As long as you put the passenger door back on, should be great!

In 2019 we did a 2.5 month road trip from Ontario to British Columbia down the West Coast of the USA and back to Ontario via Arizona, Kansas etc. We did a total of 20,000km’s and loved every minute of it. It wasn’t our first time out, as we were seasoned campers with our 5th wheel. However, don’t be afraid to go outside of your comfort zone, you never know what adventures you will find. Enjoy the RV, the memories you create will be amazing!

Hi Neil - it's Big Rodders in Ireland. You're a brave man buying any vehicle, especially a motor home, in the dark so I'm delighted for you that you didn't end up with a pig in a poke, as an old saying over here goes. If your RV have a V10 petrol engine, don't bring it over here to tour - the fuel costs would bankrupt even you!
@digdrivediy
@digdrivediy 3 года назад
The fuel costs are a little hard on the wallet even over here Big Rodders! That's why we don't venture too far from home yet. Maybe we can just come to Ireland and rent an RV? I did get lucky even though I knew better than to buy it in the dark. Thanks so much for watching!

Just discovered your channel, watched your straight-edged driveway creation first and now this. We purchased our first RV just prior to the China Virus and traveled the same as you during the pandemic. Absolutely wonderful memories with our young children that are priceless. RVing is a great experience all around and I personally cringe when we have to stay in hotel. Your love for JD is equal to mine- all you need is a barn quilt on one of your buildings. Phillip

Usually for me taking the door and frame off of the coach, refrigerator fits. Always like seeing a different prospective! I've bought several motorhomes and campers on the cheap and turn a profit. Last one was a 97 class a winnebago for 3800.00. Sold for 9000.00. I sure miss having one now, enjoy.

I figured that was the way to do it Jake but I couldn't find anywhere that said for sure. I didn't know how well that coach door would come off and well, I knew how to take the van door off. I hope I don't have to get it back out but at least now I know. Yeah, good market on these RV's. At least for now. Thanks for watching!

We have many great camping memories and a few horror stories over the years. We sort of "came up in the ranks", we started out in the back of a scout, with a homemade kitchen box made by your dad that had storage for everything you need to cook/clean and a drop-down work station. That worked till I couldn't tolerate the stiff neck. I only asked for a minimum of creature comforts. Moved up to a tent when you were born. Bathed you in a dish pan. That lasted until one 4th of July weekend at the dunes when the temps never got above 50°. I told your Dad we must have something with a heater, I was never taking our baby out again without one, so along came the pop-up that took 4 people to put up or down. We were in rv heaven..an ice box, heater, tiny sink and even plugs for such luxuries as a toaster and percolator. Then came the pop up with the roll up top, awning made by your dad from a huge tarp, tiny refrigerator, & two burner stove . Still bathed the babies in the tiny sink and used the bigger dish pans to do dishes with water heated on the stove. That lasted until I decided a toilet was a must..no more middle of the night flashlight dashes to the bath house. Our last rv only had the addition of the potty and bigger fridge, no shower, 3 burner stove & tiny oven. But we had a ball with your grandparents and Aunts and Uncles camping all over until you boys were so involved in sports we never had time to go and sold the pull type trailer we'd had for many years. Now I'd really love to have a camper again....this time with a push button awning, full size fridge, outdoor kitchen, full bath, and mounted tvs in the bedroom and living room. The older I get, the better I want it. Dad on the other hand would likely be happy in a tent again with the luxury of a blow up mattress. I dont think there's a compromise to that. I know our precious Grandaughters will grow up with many happy childhood memories. Good job Mom and Dad, you're doing great!
@digdrivediy

Thanks Mom! Much of what you described, is why we were motivated to get this. Many great childhood memories of camping and hanging together with family. This also happened to me when looking for a tractor. All the good deals for a sub compact were getting scooped up quickly. I drove 45min two separate times to get one only for the guy to call and say it sold I was mad frustrated and sad. Lots of emotions it was like I would never find one. But then a post came up must have been there for 5 minutes before I sent him a message. And it was only 20min from me I never hooked my trailer up so fast. So the guy was moving way up north Montana or something from texas. So I bought the tractor for 7000$ a 2016 1023e john deere with 64.5hrs on it I couldn't believe it they sell for 12,500 to 15,000 with those hrs. So after all the struggle god blessed me I'm so happy it turned out the way it did. All those other tractors I never got to see because they sold so quickly were old with lots of hours for almost the same price. I'm still in shock really. Sorry for the long comment just excited about my super deal. God is amazing,

I bought a '94 Fleetwood, similar to yours. On the way home (3 hr drive) the roof peeled off and I had a moon roof. Wouldn't have been so bad if it had not been raining so hard.... You are correct: most older Class C have water damage up front. I had to do a lot of maintenance and repair for the accessories, but I was lucky. All of the appliances ended up working except for the furnace (a "repairman" took it from the previous owner and never returned it). I painted the old, discolored interior, put in engineered wood floor, rebuilt the cabinets, put in stainless sinks in the bath and kitchen, installed Corian countertops, installed Pex plumbing, put in seats for the kids that had shoulder harnesses, and replaced the roof. Was it worth it? I had fun doing the renovation, and it worked great for my family. We decided we weren't using it enough, so we sold it to some missionaries who are traveling the country in it now. I did not list all the things I did to it, but everything was at least as good as factory when it left us. The renovation was at least as good as the trips we took. Thanks for sharing your family's experience.
@digdrivediy
@digdrivediy 3 года назад
Sounds like you did much more to yours. We debated on how far to go with the renovations. We settled for just "trying to make it our own" and didn't get too carried away. I would really enjoy doing something like you did if I was able to commit more time to it. For now, we'll just keep crusin'. Thanks so much for watching and sharing your RV story!

Neil... although there are two huge RV dealers next to my home. I’ve never been more than just curious about motor homes. One of the dealers hosts the Polling for our elections. I’ve been there maybe 50 times in the 30 odd years that we have lived here. I remember back in the 90’s there was one visit where they had received a trade-in. It was a really nice unit with a pop out on the drivers side and a roll up awning on the other. I don’t remember much else except the wheel covers. While standing in line to vote late one afternoon, I saw the whole crew and staff through the plate glass window. They were gathered around the trade-in that was setting outside. What caught my eye was the strobe light that was emanating from the rear wheel. The setting sun was shining on the hub cap. One of the mechanics reached over and touched it... it was a chromed ‘Spinny Wheel’! As he twisted it the sun would glint off it and the result was a blinding strobe that lit the whole area. The people gathered around became shadow figures that moved like an old time 8MM B&W movie, running on a projector with a loose belt. Prior to that, I’d only seen Spinny Wheels on TV. So curiosity got the best of me. After voting, I went out to see how they worked. The crowd had left and a couple of mechanics were removing the wheels. They showed me that it was only wheel covers. The previous owner had them custom made. He had left it there... while he went to dinner in his tow behind car.... so that they could put them on the new one he bought. There were 8 lugs and only 4 were used to hold the wheel cover on. The other 4 were punched out to slip over the lugs. It was the first and only motor home that I have seen that had such stylish accoutrements! The only other experience that I had was my father’s dream. He had been stationed in Arizona while in the Air Force (during the Korean Conflict). I don’t remember that part because I was only 1 year old. What I do remember is that during all if my life he and my mom talked about their retirement plan. They were going to sell everything and buy a motor home. Touring Arizona, Colorado and New Mexico was their dream. But, alas it was not to be. After bankruptcy, illness and life in general they never realized that dream. Looking back, I’ve wished several times that I had taken the time to rent one and drive them to see their dream. But, it is a memory that we will never share. So, take the time now. Get out on the road. See everything that you can. Give those girls memories that will last a lifetime. This is your chance. PS: the office chair door lift was pure DIY gold! Have a safe and happy Memorable Memorial Weekend!
@digdrivediy
@digdrivediy 3 года назад
Thanks so much! I've never seen spinners on an RV either! That would be one that you remember in the RV park for sure. Fortunately, Kara and I both have similar childhood memories of road trips with the our folks. We enjoyed them and recognize the fleeting opportunity that we have with our girls. I am quick to be super busy with things but willing to have this excuse to get away. I'm sitting here on a park bench while the girls all take a rest in the RV. It's cool to be able to stop wherever we want. Good times for sure. Thanks as always and appreciate your stories and support.

So very true. We let it cook for a couple days and then after a good sun dry I've kept it parked inside.

There is a nice campground not far from you. If you would like to do a weekend trip. Hickory Acres Campground in Edgerton Ohio.

I had never heard of that John! Thanks for the suggestion. That isn't too far at all so may just check it out!

It is a money pit: do it anyway if you can afford it. This is a good investment in family not in high quality vehicles. However: so that fun is better guaranteed, replace all the tires no matter what they look like!!! Belts and hoses and rubber parts in general: replace. RVs of all kinds do better with less maintenance if they are kept in a garage keeping both roof and tires out of the sun and weather.

You're so right on this one. We are doing for the family and every time I drive it, I shake my head at the build quality! But, so far; so good (knock on wood). It had brand new tires when we bought it and I've changed the serpentine belt. Our goal is stay within 4 hours from home so we're not too far if stranded! :) Oh, and I have much less shop space because we do keep it indoors now. Thanks for watching!

Curious why no power washer. Seems like it would come in handy for cleaning all the trucks and equipment you have.

I have had like 3 of them. They all turn to junk it seems like. We have one now that works pretty well from John Deere. I think we were holding off on the RV cause we wanted to see if it was gonna leak anywhere first.

The only question I have regarding this video is this. Was that RV, passenger door support device provided by Harbor Freight? If so, do you happen to have the catalog number? The swivel adjustment really sold it for me! Upshot for this purchase is, at least the girls were all there to supervise the transaction. At least there won't be any, " this is Neil, he bought this." being tossed around at family gatherings for the next 30 years.

Ha! So true Greg. I can't be the only one to blame on this one. You know, that passenger door lift tool occurred to me about 30 seconds prior to taking that door off. I wheeled that chair over and thought I could sit it on there, then it dawned on me I could raise it up! Always feel extra clever when you come up with something like that! Thanks so much for watching.

If you don't like it you can always rip it off and build a farm flatbed truck.

I ,like you always looking for a bargain, found me a nice camper for my p/u ,price is to die for, but like all women, my better half told me, I cant have it, she found another camper she wants, but out of our price range. I have searched all over, I find something, and she doesn't want. So I keep looking, I found a boat cheap last year, but she now tells me to sell it , I kinda find it better to look than too buy, or until I trade her in for a good horse....lol
