RVK Newscast #89: Two New Cinder Cones About To Merge

The Reykjavík Grapevine
Подписаться 72 тыс.

The small cinder cone from the volcano at Geldingadal became very active on Wednesday and is now almost as big as the first one. Also, it looks like the valley will soon fill with lava, and therefore the big question is: What happens after that? Experts say the lava will probably head east towards the road called Suðurstrandarvegur in the east of the Reykjanes Peninsula. Valur and Pollý also met with Dr. Matthew Roby and he told us about his upcoming show about volcanos in the Icelandic sagas.

It could instead flow out down the valley and not build up. There's no ice over it to support it building up vertically.
@richard--s
@richard--s 3 года назад
@@Dudemon-1 yes, that's a good point. It could rise until it flows out. That sounds right. Well, it still needs a gradient to flow outwards, very shallow though. The same gradient which it has in the valley where it grows around the two or three main cones. But you are right, once it flows out, it would first fill the outside up to the height where it flows out, it will also fill the outside in the same gradient, but when the outside is 50m or 100m deeper than the valley, it would take some time until it rises inside the valley again, that's true. Outside of this valley there is much more volume to fill up and this would take long and the eruption might just stop in the meantime. Well, some scientists say, it would last for years. If that's true, it would rise slowly but steadily while increasing it's base out in the surroundings in the shallow angle that we see. After all, it's a matter of time, it's a matter of the volume of the lava reservoir underneath it. We will see ;-)
