Pardon My Plate is back and bolder than ever! In the second episode of Season 2, Ryan Callaghan and Spencer Neuharth eat crow. They want to find out if crows deserve their gloom-ridden, unclean reputation-or if Americans have it all wrong. This is the kind of culinary experiment you'll only find at MeatEater. What should we cook next?

Haha. I had "pet" crow for lack of a better term that one day when I was about 11 years old I saw it on the fence line and threw it a dead mouse that I had caught in a trap and it ate it. Then it jumped down to me and squawked and started following me around so then I went and got it some liver we had in the bait fridge and so he ate that. I didnt think much of it but the next day the same bird (easy to identify because it had one eye that was like milky around its eye) and we repeated the same process. Then a few days later I went out and shot a few doves and some other pests and he kept following me and ate well again. A few weeks went by and I noticed the milky ring around its eye was getting better. I never "pet it" or anything but I did talk to it for about the 2 years it hung around me. Anytime I would go outside it would land as close as it could to me on a fence or branch or just on the ground. If I had my rifle or airgun he would fly around a bit and just perch up and watch. It more or less became my "pest buddy" and we had a mutually beneficial relationship.

@@murrijuana2842 Yep. That is why I put pet in quotes. I have no delusions that it was anything other than a reinforced learned behavior. So as a teenager I had a crow with a broken wing in my neighborhood, it was getting in conflict with dogs, and was not going to survive long term. I ran it down and euthanized it but not before it had cawed repeatedly and several of his friends observed me putting the bird down who then cawed more and continued to caw. I could not walk out of my house for more than 2 to 3 minutes for the next 2 months without an angry group of Crows assembling around me to caw furiously at me. They never got closer than say 20 feet of me sitting mostly on roofs and power lines but it is a treatment I have never gotten from any other animal I have killed.

There was somewhat of tradition for boys when they were watching the cattle on pastures to follow the crows, find their nest, snatched the young crows and grilled them over open fire. Not that long ago, post ww2, hunters sometimes still talk about this with nostalgia. Apparently the young crows taste pretty good, but in those times, where meat was on the table only on sundays (if), any meat was great meat.

The best way to eat crow is to deep fry it. It taste absolutely delicious. You don't need to add any flour, just put it in some asian sauces and then deep fry for 8-10 mins. Also, the best part are the legs. You eat it with rice and although it doesn't look like have a lot of meat, it fills you up nice. Along with rice, it will be a hearty meal.
