Ryan Fee Faces A BAFFLING River Bet. What Could This Wily Old Man Have?

It's time for more high stakes action on Live at the Bike! This time it's Ryan Fee locking horns with Barry Woods. Don't let his appearance fool you, though. Barry is capable of some gangster moves! When Ryan limp/3bets preflop, Barry casually comes in for the 4-bet and proceeds to bet 1/4 pot on the river. What on Earth could this line mean? Should Fees look him up with an underpair?
As always, Doug breaks down each street of action. Poker Hands is the show where Doug analyzes live poker hands from tv poker shows such as Poker After Dark, EPT (European Poker Tour), High Stakes Poker, the World Series of Poker (WSOP), the Aussie Millions, WPT (World Poker Tour) the Big One For One Drop, and the PCA (Pokerstars Carribean Adventure). He especially enjoys reviewing hands by popular high stakes pros like Viktor "Isildur" Blom, Ike Haxton, Dan Cates (Jungleman), Tom "Durrrr" Dwan, Phil Ivey, and OtB_RedBaron.

Hey Doug, whilst looking at your comment I notice your second name "Polk" is very close to "poker" and your first name Doug is also very close to "poker" + your guest Ryan Fee, if you put his name together "Ryanfee", it too looks like "poker", did you not consider calling this video "poker poker poker poker poker poker?" you don't need to credit me if you want to go with this in future, cheers.

I like the collaboration. There is a little awkwardness because you haven't tried this format before - and it's gotta be awkward for Fee to have his play critiqued. But I found the discussion about constructing ranges for various river actions enlightening. Think you could do more of these, there's a lot of added value (for me as a viewer) from the nuggets of information that spill out of discussions between good players.

Stop constantly calling me the old guy! My turn check, river bet accomplished exactly what it was suppose to. If, in fact, I had KQ or AK, or QQ, I would have played the same way. Ryan made a good fold if he was convinced he was beat. Just because you are getting great odds, doesn't necessarily mean you call if you think or KNOW you are beat. You actually have to not know and believe that 20% or more of the time you are good.Don't bag on Ryan. he's an online nit just learning the game

Barry Woods your smallish bet (compared to the pot size) had Ryan thinking in reverse- don't know if you intended it but since these guys are making a science out of it this whole analysis/video is a great example of bluff disguised as a valuebet. well played Barry!
@travishedgpeth9810
@travishedgpeth9810 7 лет назад
The way Ryan played this hand makes no sense to me, even after hearing him explain it. If you are going to call the flop, it seems like you absolutely have to call that river bet. You got a blank and a check-check on the turn, which is exactly what you were hoping for. The 10 on the river isn't ideal, but it's also not a disaster card. Sure, QJs (if you include that in Barry's preflop range) and TT got there, but that's pretty much it. Yes, the river bet looks super value-ish, but if you're going to fold to that bet with that run out, why ever call the flop? Was he hoping for either a J or a check-check-check-check? Because those are the only two options that are better than what he ended up getting. Anyway, thanks for the analysis, guys. Always helpful, even if it was (apparently) over my head this time.

@@mercilpb dont mind me being 3 years late... but even in your defense of ryans fold, his fold was to make up for mistakes earlier in the hand which means he misplayed it
@Marlonzen
@Marlonzen 7 лет назад
Doug Polk on every possible play for every player for every street on every hand: "I think the options of bet, fold, raise, or check are good here. They all have their merits. Also, he can probably get away with just walking away from the table and calling it quits for today. I also like him staying at the table and playing for a few more hours. I think there is merit to him keeping his sunglasses on, as that tends to hide the eyes from your opponents, but a case can also be made for taking off the glasses so you can get a better look at your opponents. He's playing really tight right now, but I think there is value in him loosing up his range a bit, but also staying as tight as he has been could be just as valuable. My weird faux hawk thing is -EV for sure though."

I believe the problem here is the flop call, your in very bad shape against Barry's 4bet/c-bet range. If you make the deviated from optimal call on the flop, your burning chips unless your think villians range has decent amount of air. Other than that there's something fishy about this hand... Barry doesn't go for value with QQ- here, let's not forget that although unlikely, also hands like KQs-K10s can be in Ryan's range here after getting such a good price following a limp-3bet facing a 4bet, along with Ryan's trapping range-(When Barry checks turn it's possible that more of Fee's value hands are skewed into checking river putting Barry on a non equity hand), therefore Fee's checking range on the river isn't as capped as it seems therefore QQ for value is to thin for Barry's standpoint. So if he's only betting AK, AA & KK 3 streets for value, what hands does he know have in his check turn - value bet river range? He's got an easy value shove on the turn it's not likes it's a dry board. So Barry's line doesn't make sense. If daddy Fee is going to get creative on the flop he should get creative enough on the river to realize Barry's story doesn't make sense. my opinion.

Both players played it well but Barry played it better. I really like the 4bet with AQs because the limp/3 bet represents a lot of strength but players also do it as a bluff. So 4 betting has a lot of chance to take down the pot immediately and if the opponent calls you want a hand like a suited Ace which has the potential for making nutted hands, has blocker value, and medium equity. It makes a lot of sense as a bluff if you disregard the Q and see it more as a 4 bet bluff with a weak suited ace as I think when called you're unlikely to have the best hand and even if you hit a pair you may not improve to the best hand, so it really is a pure bluff (If you hit an Ace opponent can easily have AA/AK and if you hit a Q opponent can easily have QQ/KK/AA). I also like the c-bet on the flop as it is an above average flop for AQ to bluff but Barry has little present equity. The Kc is a great card for to bluff bc you can turn a club giving you the nut flush draw, enabling you to profitably 3 barrell whether you hit or not, and you can also pick up a gutshot on the turn. If you do pick up equity on the turn, your draws are all into the nuts. When the 9s hits on the turn, it's a terrible card to barrell because it neither gives Barry additional equity nor is it a scare card so I like the check given that Barry should be checking approx 1/3 of turns and the 9 is in the bottom 1/3 of hands to barrell on. Additionally, Ryan almost certainly has a hand with medium showdown value given that he called a 4 bet preflop and a flop cbet. I put his range at JJ, QQ, AK with some heart flush draws. I don't think he has AA as he is likely to 5 bet preflop and/or possibly raise flop. If Barry double barrells turn I don't think Ryan is folding most of his range. Additionally, on the turn Barry still has a small amount of equity as a river A or Q has a small chance of improving him to a better hand, and he would have to fold to a raise by Ryan. And I also like the small river post-oak bluff. First, it has a reasonable chance of working and given the pot size it only needs to work 20-25% of the time to be profitable. It looks like a probish value bet from a hand like AA. However, I don't like the river fold from Ryan. Maybe I'm a sucker for pot odds but you only need to be right 25% of the time for it to be a profitable call and I think Barry has enough air in his range that you need to call with both JJ and QQ. I like the reasoning given in the video but for me it's a snap call.
@dadddyissues
@dadddyissues 7 лет назад
Dior F i actually read this and agree. but its not easy snapping 3000 dollars regardless of the pot odds you're getting. maybe ryan thought he was getting taken to value town by two queens or sth, idk what other hands would bet this size on the river. (maybe a set of kings as well)
@lavetha27
@lavetha27 7 лет назад
Yeah I get it. I've found I tend to play tighter in cash games because it's real money if I lose. Whereas, I play fairly aggressively in tournaments. #1 most tournaments involve antes and most cash games do not, favoring aggression. #2 more to your point, when I enter a tournament I immediately view the entry fee as a sunk cost; whereas, I wouldn't want to lose 3K at 50/100 even when the call in my view is trivially easy from a game theory standpoint.
@Glitch47278
@Glitch47278 7 лет назад
Meh I disagree with the snap call on the river, I don't think it's wrong either way given the pot odds, but I don't mind a fold. What air do you think he has in his range here? I think AQ suited is literally the only thing you could find in his range, and I think it's a hand the people most likely would just flat preflop. Would he really 4 bet with a hand like A5 of hearts? I don't think he really has a super wide range here. The line he took REALLY looks like AK to me, just my opinion.
@caseyhovermale8483

Why would AK check it back in position on a blank turn such as 9 spades? Almost never happens especially on a draw heavy bored and 11k in pot, not sure how that doesn't set off red flags for anyone..

So if I think snap call? Ima halfa player? Hmmmmmm? Interesting.... Especially when you consider Barry's line here. Obvious Cbet on flop. Check back turn 2800 river bet. Also consider that the only way you for sure for sure lose this hand is to fold. Definitely call the 2800. Or you raise. Raising leaves you open for the re raise tho. So definitely call. Its 2800. You called 2500 on the flop with the same exact thing. JJ facing 1 over. The K. Unless you're certain he's holding QJ there? Its a 300 chip diff from the flop bet. That's why everyone is saying snap it off there. Not because they're halfa player guppies. Because its the correct and the best move.

I don't see any comments on what i find to be an obvious discussion point why would old guy check turn on position when offsuit 9 comes, and then continue to think his range is ak? No one seems to recognize the blankest turn card on a heart flush draw flop this huge hand doesn't try and get value on turn??? It's a call on river given the turn check.. Not too many people can play a KING that tricky (tricky being checking blank turn, then small value bet river).

I feel like a key consideration is missing about the "old guy" image. It is that any old guys playing high stakes have an above average likelihood of being a self-made business man. These guys in their 30s and 40s were making six and seven figure deals every year and were often "gambling" their business, reputation, homes and employee's well beings on their strategies and ideas. The spine it takes to do that is immense. Therefore, turning the screws on some young bucks who need the money is probably what they love to do.

I would like to see a call here with JJ. We can still fold hands like A2, A5 and 9x-Tx of hearts, hence I don't feel like JJ is too far down in our range to call.

Since calling is apparently bad, and you block the nuts good and proper, why not bluff shove? You don't block flush draws and block the nut straight, seems like a great candidate and genuinely one of the best spots to do it.

"You know" how many times in my 16 years of playing NL that I've seen AA vs AK or /AK vs KK or/ AK vs KQ or /KK vs KQ or / AJ vs JJ or / AK vs AQ or /A10 vs 1010 ect ect ect...Analyzing this way every time isn't the best to approach it. Your opponent can literally have any 2 other cards at any given time. Its best to use a range of information when deciding on a call or fold, not just one piece. And if I have a gut feeling I'm beat or good, I'm usually going with that feeling regardless of pot odds because its been the most reliable for me personally. And most Older players are starting to play wider ranges that they never would have before 10-15 years ago. Evolution is a crazy thing...

One thing they didn't recommend was a lead bet on the flop from Ryan. JJ or QQ was surely in the old guy's range, and we know in hindsight that the guy would have laid down his AQ to a bet on the flop. Sometimes don't let a little paint scare you - AK was not the only end-all/be-all hand in the old guy's range...

Meh there are better hands to do this with...why turn JJ into a bluff when it's usually a bluff catcher type of hand by showdown? My goal with hands like 99-JJ is to just get them to showdown and turn them over without creating a huge pot, there are better hands to pick to turn into bluffs.

Given my understanding of GTO, isn't a big part of the betting strategy to be able to trim your opponent's range unfavorably while keeping your as wide as possible. Given that, Shouldn't Ryan be thinking about ensuring he doesn't play in a way that precludes KK post flop and/or trying to weed out whether or not Barry has a King (the only thing that he's really worried about on the turn). So making a bet that keeps a flush draw in but polarizes a Kx hand (while representing KKs yourself) seems fine here. Something like 1/3rd of the pot seems about right. When he checks the turn, I think he basically tells Barry he doesn't have a K and certainly doesn't have KK and that trims a huge number of hands. That could be flawed logic but I'd love to hear thoughts.

Can't making a nitty fold be part of the strategy to not be be exploitable. This fold by Ryan can give him a discount on calls in future hands lol

Table camera angle makes it look like Ryan is also going for Benyamine physique. Probably the only reason he appeared in this vid was to disprove that. lol.

Is there an argument for leading the river yourself? Don't think Barry checks back the turn with AK+ so I feel we can put him in a tricky spot if we bet river and even fold out something like QQ. It's a thin-ish range to target but we avoid a situation where he just jams the river or makes it like 80% of the pot and we're just bluff catching. Just my 2 cents.
