My tried and true SAAB 93 Turbo has developed a substantial leak in its power steering pump. In this video, I will remove the pump and rebuild it and reinstall it using an aftermarket gasket and o-ring kit from esaabparts.com. This example is on a 2008 model.
Come watch as I get my old trusty friend to be leak free again.

First thing I thought when I saw you tighten the banjo bolt; "thats not tight enough dude" 😉 Glad you did keep an eye on it and it is fixed now

I think showing the mistakes I make is helpful. Hopefully it shows what could go wrong and what to watch out for.

Thanks. I think the torque on the banjo might be 22nm

Thanks - hard to find the spec. 20 seems reasonable though. I actually tightened it not enough and got a tony leak. Then I tightened a little more 1/8 turn and the leak stopped. Still no leak years later.

I rebuilt mine because the washers were shot the actual metal pump and reservoir were fine. The worst seals were between the pump reservoir which leaked all over and made it impossible to tell we’re it was leaking from until I had it disassembled. That said I also thought the reservoir was shot and looked to finding a new one. Best place was junk yards. I was quoted between 20 and 80 bucks. Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Did you have to ever open the pump and put seals inside it too?

The video shows all the seals that I replaced inside the pump. There are ones on the reservoir as well as in the metal casing. All are fairly simple to install.

Did you note the final torque on the hi-pressure hose? Or did eSaabParts tell you what to use?

Hi there. If you are talking about the crush washers and the banjo fitting. Which I’m pretty sure you are, I used the torque specification of the washers which I believe was 95-120. I started on the lower end and checked for leaked and had to tighten a little more. I don’t remember the final torque though. The important thing is to not over torque it. Hopefully that helps but defiantly look up the torque value on the washer if you can.

You are welcome. If you have any question just ask. Also if you are unsure there is no reason to no have your local mechanic pressure test everything to make sure the rebuild went well. On pressure systems is not uncommon to fix one problem and have another appear. For instance I have had issue with vacuum hoses where replaces on leaky one causes another to rupture when the system returns to normal. Make sure you check the system regularly after the fix. The easiest way is to monitor the fluid in the reservoir.

We took ours apart and after we were done found a little hard plastic circle Any idea what this is. I have a pic but can’t post

@Debra Howell Hi Debra, Where did you find it in the assembly? Was it a disc or ring? It is possible it is just one of the o-rings. They can get real hard and brittle over time. I have some part diagrams from the rebuild kit. You can send me an email with the photo here if you'd like and I'll try my best to help you identify it. swbah.ken@gmail.com
