While we've driven many Porsches sports cars over the years, our European Correspondent Tom gets his first opportunity in the all new Porsche 718 Boxster S. He shows just how fast it is and explores its cornering capability, all while debating if the engine note really matters.

I bought a Cayman GTS 2016 with that flat 6 instead of 718 Cayman S. I honestly liked everything about the 718, the noise isn't as good, but its not bad. The cornering capability definitely is stronger than the 981 by a marginal amount. In the end i got the GTS because i cant wait for the 718 (would ship in a few month) plus the flat 6 does sound glorious, and it just invites you to rev out the car hard. That's the one thing I did not find in the 718 and didn't even know I needed until I really started driving both. But boy, does it make you smile. The sound is easily audible and very in your face and mechanical. You hear EVERYTHING, intake, belt, throttle clicks, clutch. its not quiet on low revs, yet unlike the 718. It progresses in pitch higher revs where the 718 falls flat and simply grows louder with same pitch. As for the performance, It's by little difference and I dont do heavy tracking on cayman friendly tracks regardless. The GTS just has more emotion. And every time taking it to the redline. You feel like a beast and laugh every time.

@Malcom2345

Tuning gets a bit more out of these, noticeably much more torque which is excellent for the track and general driving. Additionally that extra power really starts having an influence the faster you go, worth every cent of a 1k upgrade. The fastest version of these is the gts @3.7sec, thats a real impressive figure for a 4banger straight out of the box. As lm also running a heavier wider set of 996 gt3 wheels and tyres means l don’t lose too much grunt on rotational mass whilst still getting the extra grip. Unlike the 987 & 981, the 718 is a real performer.

The sound you are excited about is the crackle at lift, but the flat 6 sings upon acceleration instead. The crackle gets annoying after a while but the other doesn't.

This being my first Porsche, my 718BS sounds great (without sport exhaust). I drove a 981BS on a test drive and yes, it sounded better and drove worse. Again as a novice in a Porsche, I could tell the difference. I can understand how a owner of a 981 or earlier may not like the sound, I get it. If I want more sound, I can get an aftermarket exhaust but overall the host comments are pretty spot on (minus the actual need for sport exhaust). If you enjoy driving, this car is pretty special.

Guys, Take the manual tranny out of the picture and add the PDK with the lowered 718 S chassis, and you now have a 350 hp super car accelerating at 3.6 seconds from 0-60 mph. It's a German Jet on the roads, and it will pass most of what is encounters with minimal effort. By comparison, the 2016 Cayman GT4 ran the 0-60 in 4.1 seconds with 385 hp derived from the exiting flat six. I am loving this new 718 Cayman S PDK.

I recently purchased a 718 Boxster S and did due diligence in researching the different models before I made the purchase. I was initially turned off by the fact that the 718 was a 4 cylinder but considering this was my first Porsche purchase the sound of the engine vs. better efficiency and more power seemed like an easy decision. I do agree that the sound of the naturally aspirated flat 6 is amazing however the sound of the 718 matched with the sport exhaust is equally amazing, just different. I actually found a base model 911 that was in my price range. I will admit that my ego wanted the 911; but the Boxster S with the Sport Chrono Package had a faster 0-60 time than the 911. I came to this conclusion. The 718 Boxster S is an great introduction into the world of Porsche and the sound difference between the flat 4 and flat 6 makes the eventual upgrade to. a 911 S just that much more memorable, however, I am now looking at the Cayman 718 GTS 4.0 as my next upgrade. Which leaves me with the question, putting the historical significance of the 911 aside, will the 911 ever be a real option for us next generation Porsche owners? Here's a clip of my Boxster: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Sp-EiNfXUuY.html

How can it be sacrilege when the ICONIC models (primarily the 550 Spyder) that the Boxster was inspired by were ALL 4 CYLINDER CARS??? Are there that many Porsche enthusiasts now that are unfamiliar with the marque's history and some of the models which helped establish their reputation and status within the automotive world during their formative years?
@papasmurf986
@papasmurf986 7 лет назад
Very well put...most internet fanboys know nothing beyond the 911 unfortunately and a large majority of people purchasing porsches today are looking for the name plate more than anything else. Just look at how many consider the 911 the only real porsche when the 356 and various racers pioneered the way years before with smaller engines.

It doesn't matter what they were inspired by all that really matter is as a direct generational 'upgrade' the car lost two cylinders and a whole hell of a lot of soul because of it. For some that's sacrilege.
@diegofkda199
@diegofkda199 7 лет назад
What? Less cylinders doesn't mean less power. The new Boxster is faster than the older one. The reason beyond the extraction of two cylinders is fuel economy restrictions for a car like the Boxster, due its size.
@Baerchenization
@Baerchenization 7 лет назад
Jesus Christ. It is not a sacrilege. It is a drama. Because things can improve over the decades, you know. The flat 6 is awesome and people who have driven one recognise this. Don't pretend that 4 is somehow good, or better, because of what Porsche did a hundred years ago, out of the technological and financial constrains during the post-war years! If you had a point, then the obvious question to ask would be why did Porsche EVER bother to build a flat 6 in the first place?! With that awesome flat 4 heritage?! And we know that nobody - including Porsche liked the idea too much after all - which explains the life and fate of the 912... they just talk up their BS as they need it... it's OK, they are a business and need to sell shit. Also, it really pains me to see how people suck up and regurgitate all this marketing nonsense... The Boxster wasn't inspired by the 550, or anything. It is the historic love-hate relationship of Porsche with the rear engine, which never made much sense for the commonly known reasons, and OF COURSE Porsche has been looking left and right ever since what to do about that, mid-engine being an obvious candidate for a sports car. In the 70s, they thought the front V8 would replace the rear flat 6, duh. If that had caught on (in the shape of the 928 of course), the marketing BS would read very differently today. But with the benefit of hindsight, they talk it up as that precious 911 heritage they have been hedging... if you want to indulge in that and it makes you feel better, go crazy dude :) They had hedged plans to kill the rear engine and the flat 6 concept, that is the 911 all together, more than once... what more needs to be said? Porsche also had mid-engine 911's running (which you can learn about at the Porsche RU-vid channel in their "Secrets"-series of videos) and THAT resulted in the Boxster, not what some old ass 550 or 718 did a hundred years ago. - Which is why the original Boxster was literally 1 :1 a 911 from the front up to the wind screen; plus the 911 doors, of course. And then the 981 again wasn't inspired by the 718 or any of that, it took license from the 918 with the head lights design-wise (while of course being the update to the previous two models), and the 982 is just a refined 981 design. Such a poor choice to call it 718, as if it were something novel in the shape of a 982 now, or something actually retro, while it is just the same thing in its fourth incarnation... Porsche enthusiasts call it 982 (just like Porsche ;) ). Also, since the now turboed Carrera is a 991.2, it would not have been a terrible thing to call the Boxster 981.2... how about it? The 982 looks nothing like a 718, and everything like a 981, of which it is a refined design. It only makes sense that that dumb 718 badge needs to be optioned, which Porsche has kindly done for all the press cars of course, so that they can literally all start out their reviews with the same naff heritage talk (you got no idea how much work it is to even make a 5 minute RU-vid video... so they pick that shit up gladly). How come nobody noticed for the past 20 years that the 986, 987, 981 all have those ancient genes in them? Because the engine had 2 cylinders too many so far and that tricked everybody? If you believe it... :) Well, I guess first you have to rationalise that spending 100.000 bucks on something as unsustainable as a sports car is a good idea, so OF COURSE 4 cylinders must be marketed, and therefore must be good... I mean, Porsche put it in there, how could it possibly be a bad idea?! They did the same thing when they introduced the latest 991 and 981 GTS models... really painful having to hear every dumbass car reviewer recycle the exact five factoids from the press package, and possible throwing in a 10 second clip of some historic racing GTS - wow, so that's where my GTS is coming from, who knew! But of course it is also bullshit; Porsche made GTS models "forever", I don't see why it was suddenly such a thing with the introduction of the most recent models (except marketing). How about a 928 GTS? I was still shitting diapers when that came out... Until just now, every Porsche owner already knew the flat 6 - unlike the reviewer here; so they are speaking from experience, not ignorance of heritage. None of this is to say the 982 is a bad car; every new Porsche is always better than the previous one... but it is just a fact that this car can never quite be again what it used to be. But hey, people accepted the water cooled engine, the turboed flat 6, and now the 4 cylinder; and they will buy the hybrid and the electric-only, too, one day... and of course it will drive a lot better again, which will make up for the loss in other departments, just like the first water cooled 911 did...

Over the years, I've driven all Porsche models from 914 to the 991.2 - - Porsche has proven they can design, build, race and sell world class 4-cylinder sports cars, but I haven't drank the 2017 718 cool-aid yet ... Good review, fun, informative, without getting bogged down on either side. The flat six just sounds better, there's no way around it. But I suppose if I had the 718, the exhaust crackles are a nice consolation :P I spent some time at my dealer the other day while my S4 was being serviced, they have a new Cayman S with the flat six still, alongside a 718. Tough choice, but debating going back and seeing what kind of deal they'll make on the "older" one, since they have 718's to clear now.

Lets be honest here. The pops and other noises were added to make the 4 cylinder sound less weak and more dynamic. It helps, but we all know it's not the same musical symphony as before. The car itself is a step on, of course. Just comes down to what interests you more, the visceral feel or the objective drive - they are equally valid opinions. Time (and Porsche) moves on inexorably.

The 718 is a good car, but... here are the official registration numbers of new sports cars in the first half of 2017 in Germany: Cayman 578, Boxster 1410, Mercedes SLK/SLC 2041, Ford Mustang 3322, Audi TT 3846. The Germans, who really love Porsche, prefer other sporty cars over the pricey 718 four cylinders. At least in terms of German sales the 718 underperforms considerably.

Yeah what a great point 90k for a 4 cylinder car? Tough pill to swallow. I love the Cayman in Miami blue that with the gray 5 spoke 20"rims.

Yeah, it's not a flat-six, but the 944, 968, 356, 914, and 928 all head non-flat-six configurations (914 had a flat-six version later) and no one discredits those cars today. I find the idea of people saying that it's not a Porsche without a flat-six to be totally myopic. It's a Porsche if it's designed by them, built by them, and sold by them. Besides, you can't deny that the 982 (718) platform is a major improvement over the 981s; it looks better, it handles as well if not better, and it's much faster. They've made it look more sleek and compact, like the 987s, while the 981s seemed a little too big, like the 991 911s. The noise isn't terrible, it just sounds more generic. I'm hoping these new caymans will end up like the 987, selling for half their original price in 6 years so that I can buy one.
