An alternative to the big washers is to use a long stiff board (screwed in) to temporarily hold the thin plywood in place. That would prevent dimples on the surface under the washers.

Was thinking about the carpenter that gave you grief for not knowing a faster way to scribe, figuring out a way to do it on your own, means when a carpenter shows you, you will listen, you will learn, you will be even more excited. In short I think you are awesome, keep up what your doing, and remember it is not about perfection but progress, and you do progress better then most. Thanks for sharing

Mads, the funny thing is that all theses people are going electric motors and stuff but when you watch their vlogs, about twice a year you see them with their gas powered dingy strapped alongside their boats. Powering them into a marina, or up a channel, or in a river. But somehow this is not relative to how great all electric vessels are. Not trying to start an argument here, just pointing out a bit of a funny pattern. To each his or her own. Peace guys.

I know the paint will probably look great in the end, however, I think with all the time you’ve put into it you should varnish. To me it’s a way to show off the effort put into the whole build. Just my opinion.

Problem is port side bulkhead grain is vertical and starboard side is horizontal. It would look very weird. As it is, unless he uses a filler, you'll see the grains go in different directions even painted.
@SailLife
@SailLife 4 года назад
No, you won't see the grain when the bulkheads are painted :)
@DavidW27
@DavidW27 4 года назад
I think you are going the right way with the paint, Madz. Varnish is lovely for a classic or a "show boat", but for a boat being sailed and lived aboard day in - day out paint is easier to clean, maintain and repair and the white opens out the space.
@Edward-zr6fu
@Edward-zr6fu 4 года назад
@@SailLife I don't know how open grained your plywood is, but I think you'd need to paint some sort of filler primer on it to make the grain disappear. I painted three coats(one primer, two top coats) on the bulkheads that I had replaced with Okume plywood, inside my boat. You can still see the grain. Wish I had used a filler...

thumbs up for getting that ply wrapped around there, I wouldnt have tried that myself. in the end fairing is probably same amount of work, so personal preference is key. keep in mind that dull paints are much more forgiving when fairing than glossy, and who wants a glossy bulhead!?! great work!

Your work is really getting top notch. As you work on fitting in pieces to the walls, I suggest you get a scribe/compass. Then you don't have to measure every few inches. It's easier and faster to scribe out the shape you want and then cut.

I have been waiting patiently to see hoe you were going to "wrap" that 4mm plywood around those corners ! I never knew you cut set a depth of cut of 2mm on a circular saw !! This sure does seem like a lot of work just to get a mostly "fair" surface for paint.

Just fairing the panels and painting, would have been perfectly sufficient, without the added effort of adding 4 mm ply.

This comment actually applies to a few videos ago, which I just got around to watching. The nav desk. I agree that you don't need to raise it, and you don't need to make storage under the desk. But you do need some storage, every office does. That empty panel above the switch panel needs a cabinet. Maybe 15 cm high x 3/4 the length of the panel x as deep as you can make it.

pgreenx I hate when they use the excuse it takes to long to edit it to justify a shorter video. Most people watch to learn or be entertained and a15 minute or less video for a 7 day period is just not thinking of how many thousands of more people would watch making him more money by RU-vid . They have a great program that we love to watch I mean the viewers are why they are here to start with aren’t they. I wish they would just try it and see we will watch the entire video if it was longer.
@SailLife
@SailLife 4 года назад
@@mwatkins2464 First off I'm glad you're enjoying the videos but "thinking too highly of themselves"? Where the heck did that come from? I think we're coming at this from two different perspectives. Let me explain it from my side. To get 16 minutes of video this week I spend 33 hours working. That is not including editing (the way I shoot editing only takes about 1.5 hours per video). That's 33 hours on top of a full-time job as a software developer. There are only 24 hours in a day. The only way I could add more minutes is by talking more. When I talk more people complain that I talk too much (work more talk less). The average view duration for my videos is 11 minutes. Clearly, longer videos do not automatically equal better videos for most people. Longer videos do not equal more viewers. Besides I'm not here for the number of videos
@mwatkins2464
@mwatkins2464 4 года назад
Sail Life I’m not saying make more videos I was just talking about adding a few more minutes. I always watch the entire video and can’t understand why most people only watch 11 minutes like you said. I miss spoke about thinking high of yourself that came out wrong (sorry) . If it’s that hard then you shouldn’t do it cause I don’t know I’m not there. Have a nice day Mads 👍

A tip on filling nail or screw holes in something that's going to be varnished, wet sand the surface the hole is in with medium grit ~100 paper and the varnish as the wet until the hole is filled with the paste that will be made, wipe off and keep on varnishing. No need to even wait for the first to dry, result is invisible hole.

Dear Sail Life, Forgive the comment being a bit different, It's my first time using youtube. Firstly I'd like to compliment you on your videos found them interesting to watch. I had picked up your story part way through whilst I was looking for information on boat insulation. So I sat watching with interest and noticed the companion way steps looked very much like my own boat, strange I thought. I then went looking for your type of boat within the series of videos you've posted... could not believe it ! you have the same boat as me, bought it within months of me buying mine in 2016 and that we embarked upon a full refit at the same time. I hope that at some point we might get to talk to each other, but in the meantime it did make me smile with your comments about the hull sanding because I went exactly the same route as you for the same reasons... suffering the same pain... unbelievable !! Looking forward to starting from video 1 and comparing notes along the way.

Besides added solarpanels there is another argument for a separate diesel generator.. You should be able to configure your diesel engine to run on it's optimal engine powerband. The efficiency of a diesel engine is bound to it's rpm / nominal load. When you can configure to run the engine on it's most efficient setting, it will run FAR more economic than when using the drive engine for electricity generation....

I need to match the end grain of the plywood and cut a bi-directional, inverse longitudinal pro-rate curve to match the inter-dimensional time wrap curve on the inside of the shelf in the outside under seat storage area on the port side near the cockpit scupper in order to maintain consistency. The more consistent the wood work the better performance to windward.

Just a pea-shooting idea, but you could also have a fin generator. On the aft section of the boat, hinged, a section of material that moves up and down at the waterline. That, tied to a crank, would generate quite a bit of juice simply by being in the water. Could also serve as a large "plank" for when you're moored.
