Sailing through the Mona Passage [Transatlantic, Stage 2] #97

We had not heard much about the Mona passage before we realized that there was no way we could exit East of Puerto Rico. But the fact that it has a name (let alone a reputation) should have been enough of a red flag.
After three days of tiring upwind sailing across the Caribbean, we welcomed a calm morning as we approached Puerto Rico. Unfortunately, the calm did not last and we soon figured out where the Mona passage gets its reputation from.

Motoring into a head sea is the worst motion for a yacht that induces sea sickness. Next time try a reef or 2 in the main, sheet it in hard, traveller to centre & bring the bow down to it just until main fills. This style combined with the motor will help everything & make life more comfortable. Sail safe

Thanks for taking us along on your adventure. When you are motoring with the wind coming directly at your nose do you furl your Genoa and bring your main down completely ? Watching that Bamboo pass by made me think if you carry fiber glass repair kit ! How do you patch the outside ? use the dinghy or Scuba gear ? Those patch below the ear or Gravol taken orally do not work ? Feel better and Fair Winds.
@RyanSophieSailing
@RyanSophieSailing 2 года назад
Yes, when we motor, we take the headsail in and we center the mainsail (though we do not need to take it down). We could absolutely not go in the water to make repairs outside of the hull in these conditions. We do carry a few repair kits for those circumstances and we would have to make do with what we have, but the most likely scenario at that exact moment would be a call to the coast guards for a pump and a tow if the damages were that bad. If that wasn't an option, next would be diverting the boat to the nearest port for repair and worst-case scenario, an EPIRB activation.

I have crossed that passage many times and normally weather is pleasant with Easterly winds blowing at safe strength most of the time. Your losing battle to stay on course made you miss two great opportunities. First, you could have stopped in the Southwestern town of Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico and rest a couple of days in a small but nice Marina. Second, you missed a stop in Mona Island, considered the Galapagos of the Caribbean. Only one time I crossed from Puerto Rico to Dominican Republic and the waves were from 10 to 15 feet with winds over 20 knots.

I would have loved to stop in Puerto Rico. I know that you’re new here so you do not know this, but unfortunately, I do not have a visa to even step foot on land (going on three years since the last time I could go anywhere in the US), so. Yeah. No Puerto Rico for me until USCIS processes my case.

I am noticing some critical lacking in basic skills. Far to many have never bothered with learning basic winch handling. Flipping the line to release, inadequate wraps and safety basics; details matter. Seamanship is the fine art of doing the right thing even when so doing is a big pain in the backside. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Ul1bDNEn8TI.html In our continuous quest to be competent mariners, we need to learn to use our own common sense and rational thought when deciding which gear or technique used by others we will adopt and ones we will not. No amount of reading, listening to podcasts, or watching videos comes even close to the amount each of us learns on a single voyage. Bravo to you all for getting out there and sharing your experience. The learning never stops. Post script; Good on you for setting up a proper preventer. Very few do this correctly. I will venture to guess Andy showed you this.

I’ve sort of been wondering why you didn’t try tacking eastward before turning north, when you started the voyage,so that you would go around Puerto Rico the way you planned. Is that something you considered and discarded and if so why? Thanks!
@RyanSophieSailing
@RyanSophieSailing 2 года назад
00:16 We tried to sail as East as possible without tacking (tacking through the Caribbean would have been twice as horrendous as sailing through the Mona passage). But the West current in the Carribean sea pushed us too far West for us to go East of Puerto Rico. So... yep ;)
@nixl3518
@nixl3518 2 года назад
@@RyanSophieSailing I'm not sure why tacking would've been more horrendous than what you went through but that's exactly what I was suggesting, that you tack your way to the eastern Coast of Puerto Rico, since that was your original intent. Sophie's cooking skills are amazing! I'm guessing that her meals made the passage much more tenable!!
@RyanSophieSailing
@RyanSophieSailing 2 года назад
@@nixl3518 with short and steep waves coming from the East, we would have been bashing like crazy, and would have spent a lot more time in this hell. Better biting the bullet, haul ass on one tack and make it out as fast as possible. Whoever wants to tack in the Caribbean Sea is welcome to do that, but we elected otherwise ☺️

@@RyanSophieSailing right on. Bashing into the C-Sea leads to unnecessarily stressing the boat (and the crew) too much and eventually something breaks. There's a guide to heading east called the "Thornless Path" that details how to head east from the Bahamas -> DR -> PR -> VIs. And in summary the guide book says to wait for the diurnal wind effect to overcome the trade winds and leave at night, motoring close to shore (e.g. DR coast and PR coast). The book goes into great detail about strategies for crossing the Mona from West to East. And it explains why the Mona can be such a beast. From the shoaling (especially near Hourglass shoals off the East Coast of DR) which raises up the waves, the squall line that falls off the West Coast of PR, and the current. In the book he describes making jumps across various spots in the Caribbean, like you guys did and his advice is always to fall off, you can make up easting when the wind shifts. Anyway, highly recommend the book to any viewers looking to Island hop down in the Caribbean.

I grew up on the west coast of Puerto Rico. The Mona passage swell is caused by an extremely precipitous rise in the sea floor in-between the Domican Republic and PR. The Puerto Rico trench just north of Puerto Rico is extremely deep (over 8000 meters). In the Mona Passage the depth decreases to less than 100 meters in some areas. This underwater plateau can create impressive swells as the north to south current is pushed upwards. Local knowledge is to transit at night and be in port by noon
