Transatlantic, Stage 1: Crossing the Caribbean Sea #96

After four months of work and a chaotic week of last-minute preparations, the day has finally come to leave Bonaire and set sails towards the Azores.
The first leg of this Atlantic crossing takes us upwind from the South of the Caribbean Sea to the South of Puerto Rico. We are hoping to exit between Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, but it becomes quickly clear that this will be a challenge.
Welcome to a few days of choppy beamy swell, squalliness and seasickness across the Caribbean Sea!

After my years at sea you nailed it. It’s hard, most have utterly no idea, and I never see first days at sea on vids. Congrats on your BEST video. Even turning on the camera took courage. Fair winds and following seas.

I honestly do not remember how I managed to pick up the camera so much, there were moments of deep seasickness misery during that passage :p I remember on the afternoon of the second day feeling so bad, and knowing that I needed to put calories in my body. I was laying in bed, and it took everything I had to crawl down under the chart table and in the ditch bag where I knew that we had some gels (I should have put some gels in a more accessible place, but never imagined I'd need it). I sat on the floor trying to ingest the gel, drowning in sweat, feeling nauseous as ever. I fed the fish a few times that day. That moment could not be recorded. 😅

I grew up on a boat. I got seasick a lot. Over the years I learned a few things that may help or work for you, too. Need to sleep? Lie on your back. You won't throw up. It's not like alcohol poisoning where you'll vomit regardless. When you have mal de mer, your body knows better than to upchuck while you're on your back. When you've drunk too much, your body is _poisoned_ and will try to expel the poison regardless. (That's what got Jimi Hendrix.) Seasick? Lie on your back. Drunk? Lie on your side or stomach. Turn off the autopilot and steer by hand. Being busy with an activity as vital as steering the boat and watching out for traffic, weather, rocks, reefs, etc. and monitoring the sails and their trim takes your mind off of your misery, at least partially. You'll save some battery power, too. Also, it keeps you up on deck where you can (probably) see the horizon, which helps. Seasickness seems to occur because the somatic sensations in the inner ear of the motion of the boat against the waves doesn't match well with what you see, so being below exacerbates that effect. The fresh air of a breeze seems to help as well. The only _cures_ I know for seasickness is terror and just getting used to the motion by sailing on the ocean often. Whenever I was at sea and the situation was such that I had strong concerns about survival, the seasickness seemed to just go away. I can't really recommend that cure, though. Seasickness is psychosomatic, while also being undeniably real. Seasick pills never really worked on me. Unless they were so strong as to make me absolutely stupefied and thickheaded, they didn't have enough effect to "cure" my seasickness and just made things worse.

Can’t fault your logic on the patch. In 2019 the wife and I went on an Alaskan cruise during the summer. Even through I spent 14 years station on ships in the American Navy I took before we boarded dramamine just in case because I was having an inter ear issue at the time. No problem. My wife who said she didn’t need it got sea sick the next day.

At sea, is it possible to place a compact version of a muffle furnace ? A muffle furnace reduces garbage to ash thereby reducing off-odors and weight of garbage and trash during passages. It may also be more environmentally friendly at sea or dock side. PS- Iowa Hawkeye football looking good this year, as of 9/28 the Hawkeyes are 2nd in the B10 West. @RyanSophieSailing
@RyanSophieSailing 2 года назад
We stayed on the same tack the entire passage. Tacking would have increased the time and distance too much, and our priority was to get out of there as soon as we could. We were averaging over 6 knots on that passage and had to work at slowing the boat down to keep her "somewhat" comfortable.

Did the same passage in 76, we did it in 24 hours & set some kind of record for a Graff rig over 24 hours (ETAK). I was on Black Douglas & had to run the engine the whole trip to keep up the ETAK. So how long did it take you all? Loved the pure sailing footage, yes it gave an old man chill bumps.

Admire your bravery Sophie & Ryan. Would it be better tp spend more time above deck starring at the horizon to cope with Sea Sickness ? Do fruits and vegetables stay fresh longer when suspended in nets above deck than below ? Does your Dodger come with two extra pieces that wrap around the transom protecting both helm seats ? Pretty drafty there !! All the best and safe passage.
@RyanSophieSailing
@RyanSophieSailing 2 года назад
When it comes to seasickness, what works best (for us) is to make ourselves as comfortable as possible. Keeping cool when its hot, warm when it's cold. Go in a place of the boat where the motion is the gentlest, and work on eating and drinking water. The fruits and vegs and in the net because there is no space for them below! ;) And yes, our bimini/sprayhood setup comes with a full enclosure that we use to protect the cockpit from the elements when we're offshore. It makes the cockpit a much more comfortable place to navigate from, and makes a huge difference in the energy levels of the crew.

Can I ask where you sailed for your shakedown cruise? Did you study the weather to avoid the wrong wind and swell? Just wondering as it looks a bit rough out there. I know the equipment you have high up on the back changes the balance of the boat and it’s very rockin’ rollin’ for you so hope you aren’t too seasick for long.

We knew exactly what we were getting ourselves into. This was actually great weather for the area. We talked about it in our weather routing brief: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ROlukkzRAlc.html

@@RyanSophieSailing Wow so if you knew exactly what you were getting into what made you pick such crap weather? Was there no good weather window? How awful for you all. Sorry to see that.

@@RyanSophieSailing Oh ok I must have missed some of that. and the shakedown cruise? Did I miss a whole video or maybe you didn’t video it? Do you manage to sleep with all the creaking and groaning of the boat?

What would that have been like sailing through on a catamaran?
@RyanSophieSailing
@RyanSophieSailing 3 года назад
That is a question we asked ourselves a lot with Anett, who only sails catamaran. But with the waves coming on the beam, it would probably still have been rough. That passage, up the Caribbean Sea, is notoriously gnarly no matter the boat!

I understand catamarans have a more erratic multistage motion than a monohull. There are two hulls to get bounced around at slightly different timings.

Miserable though you may have been I did not see the fear in your eyes that you showed at the beginning when you did not have confidence in your boat or yourself. An experienced crew means a great deal.

Absolutely! We have come a long way since our beginnings (I was actually watching some old videos lately, man... I was SCARED :p). But there is no other way out of fear than going through it!, and I'm glad I persevered even when it was rough :)

You all need to edit out showing sick faces so much. We come to see true sailing, the boat and how it does, and the seas. We have had overdoses of sick dying people with covid. Blessings.

I mean... trust me. If I could get rid of seasickness, I would 😂 (and there goes some true sailing for you! 😜) /Sophie
