We certainly feel like we have everything we need here and I've mentioned before it does feel like a small version of a big city. I think bus service is very good too. We moved here from Ontario in February. We got all brand new stuff for way less than what a mover would charge. The shopping here is amazing!! Love, love Sobeys!! Definately getting a Costco card now!! I stopped going to the ones in Ontario as they were always over packed with big line ups and no parking.

Wow, you sound just like us. When we moved here from BC three years ago, we drove across the country and anything that didn't fit in our car didn't come with us. We sold it all on the Facebook bidding sites. Buying new was cheaper than moving the old stuff, way more fun, and fit perfectly with a fresh start in a new location. And I was a Costco hater until coming to Saint John. Here, it's a peaceful, fun experience. Welcome to Saint John. I hope your experience will be just as enjoyable and rewarding as ours has been.

@@WeLoveSaintJohn For the record, Les, the area that contains the streets of McAllister Drive, Westmorland Road, Majors Brook Drive, Retail Drive, Consumers Drive, Fashion Drive, Depot Court, Hubert Street, and East Point Way all encapsulate what's called the McAllister Regional Retail Centre, of which McAllister Place is a component of that area. As for some bonus info for you below, there has been active year-to-year development in that part of Saint John since 1994, but it's overall history began in 1973 with the opening of Parkway Mall on August 15 that year. McAllister Place was the 2nd major mall to open on Nov. 1, 1978 at 10AM that morning. The spot where The Brick is, which used to be Sears Canada, opened to customers on August 2, 1989, and the spot which is currently occupied by Marshall's-HomeSense opened as a Sobeys back in I think late-June or early-July of 1996. The whole mall then got a massive inside makeover which officially opened on November 14, 2009. Walmart Supercentre started it's life as a regular Walmart back on Friday, November 12, 1999, after closing it's Loch Lomond Mall(Place) store 2 days earlier. I know that because I was in both locations on the days that they closed(4PM at LLM on Nov. 10) and the day the new store opened(after getting out of school for the day). The Indigo Bookstore at East Point Shopping opened as the 1st ever Indigo east of Montreal as well back in 2008, and I was there for it's 1st day of ops. That part of Saint John, from 1995-2009 was my favorite haunt, and was, when home internet was relatively new, the zone where I used any computer I saw to browse some 'Net too. For me, some awesome times there just chillin' and vibin' there, feeling the social heartbeat that pounded all around me. =)

@@RaginRonic Wow, thank you for that great information. We've mentioned in several videos that we have only been here three years, we are the dreaded Come From Aways, trying to help others thinking of moving to this area. Saint John does not get the credit it deserves as being a stunningly beautiful city and a great place to live, so we want to do our small part to share the city from an outsider's perspective. We don't get all the details right, and we don't know all the local history, so thank you again for your contribution, we just try to show why we love being here and why we think others will love it too.

Yes I'm aware any new place It's harder to meet someone, but I wasn't asking about that. In other words I heard it's better for families to move there than single people generally speaking.

Good on ya for trying to show Saint John in a positive light. Too many folks from the maritimes are scared of Come From Aways, but I think they're being a bit alarmist and we need young families to move in to revitalize the province, especially after this pandemic. My partner and I are from SJ, and met at UNBSJ. She used to have an apartment on Douglas Ave, and I'm Grand Bay born and raised, but spent a lot of time uptown and on the north end. We're finishing our educations in Nova Scotia, and we're debating whether we'll come back or stay here in NS. I'm trying to convince her to let us come back!
@WeLoveSaintJohn
@WeLoveSaintJohn 3 года назад
Thank you, and I couldn't agree more with your statement. The pandemic has brought awareness to this city and may turn out to be a blessing in disguise. Hopefully you can convince your partner that your money will go much further here and life will be more fulfilling and enjoyable. Nova Scotia is beautiful but it seems all the jobs are in Halifax, where the cost of living is high and growing pains are being experienced. I think life is just better in Saint John.

@WeLoveSaintJohn
@WeLoveSaintJohn 3 года назад
Thank you for watching our little videos. Congratulations on your choice to move to beautiful New Brunswick. For us, we found the easiest thing to do, after selling our home in BC, was to also sell everything in it. We found it would cost almost as move to move everything as it would to buy everything new once we got here, so that's what we did. We did not fly here. We packed our clothing, sentimental items and our dog with us in our car and drove across the country. It took us a week of 10-12 hour driving days. We could have done it quicker but chose to go across northern Ontario since our dog is a pit bull and they are banned in Ontario so wanted to avoid heavily populated areas. If you fly, I believe large dogs have to go in the cargo hold and require very specific containers. I think many people sedate their dogs before flights but I'm not sure the best way to fly them over.

I'd estimate that over 40 of them showcase just how beautiful this city is, but you make your comment on a video of a commercial district. Hello there, how affordable are second-hand cars in Saint John? I see that leaving in some areas is car dependent. Please share information on vehicle insurance if possible. Thank you
@WeLoveSaintJohn
@WeLoveSaintJohn 3 года назад
The cost of buying a second hand car will depend on what type of car you buy, the age, condition, features etc. It could range from maybe $2,000 - $50,000. You should be able to find a decent used car for under $10,000. However, all vehicle purchases are taxable at 15% in addition to the purchase price. You will also need a vehicle inspection before you can insure it. The inspection costs $45 I think currently and is good for 2 years. If the inspection notes repairs are required, you will have to have them done before you can register and insure the vehicle. You also need to register the vehicle each year which I think is around $150 for the year. Insurance depends on the desired coverage and also your driving record and claims history. If you can get a driver's abstract from your current country it could help but I really don't know how they deal with international drivers. For our fairly basic car we pay around $100 per month for insurance. If you will be living in the city of Saint John, it really shouldn't be necessary to have a vehicle unless you want one. Yes, it's much more convenient but there is bus service to most places, and taxis are readily available anytime. If you are going to live outside the city, then you will pretty much need a car. Do you know yet what area you will be living in?
@monsieurtalent9715
@monsieurtalent9715 3 года назад
@@WeLoveSaintJohn From what I have seen in your videos I think the West is good. I will be going to NBCC so I hope the bus transfers work smoothly. I want accommodation which is nearer to schools so that my kids do not commute long distances. For driving I will work on getting my driver's licence abstract from Zw but not sure if they know what the abstract is. Otherwise the other option is to quickly get a licence on arrival since I have over 10 years of experience in driving. This might a better option for me because insurance I hear is also cheaper if one has a local drivers licence.

@@monsieurtalent9715 I just checked the transit schedule. From the west side to NBCC requires one transfer and takes around 40-45 minutes. West side shopping does not require a transfer and takes around 15 minutes. I much prefer the west side but for convenience, there are some parts of the east side that would not require a transfer and be quicker to NBCC which is on the east side. Same goes for shopping and in some cases you may be walking distance.
