Held in Meiwa, Mie Prefecture, Japan, Saio Matsuri is a beautiful procession of people in colorful Heian Period costumes highlighted by the Saio princess. The Saio princess was the High Priestess of Ise Jingu Shrine during the 7th to 14th centuries. The Saio princess was an unmarried, young Imperial princess, often the Emperor's daughter or sister. She lived in Saiku Palace in Meiwa near Ise. The festival reenacts part of the Saio princess procession traveling from Kyoto to Saiku Palace. Closest station is Saiku Station on the Kintetsu Yamada Line.
