I wish trial modes in fighting games had this kind of structure. Like "combos off light hit" or "combos to gain meter" or "combos to corner carry" . I love doing trials but hate how most of the time, they really dont make me learn the game very much unless I go back and practice one of the easier ones for a day straight to committ it to muscle memory but still have no gameplan nor idea of the actual basics (like frametraps or whiff punishes)

The thing about alot of combo trials is that they're usually not the best combos, just ones to challenge your exacution the problem with that is nobody told new players that so it's really easy to think that that's the combo you should be doing even though the situation for the combo will only rarely come up. I had this problem is sfv when I learned a Cody combo that uses meter and commuted it to muscle memory but when I tried using it in a match the damage wasn't worth it and the situation in which I could even use it in the first place almost never came up. I think unist is better at it as they till you if the combo is from a poke or a low or if its using meter before you even have to look at it, it still doesn't really teach you much about the game but at least it vaguely points you in the right direction.

I guess the coincidence is that the game he's playing does something very similar to what your describing. Basic combos for newcomers and in the intermediate section combos for damage, with meter, or for knockdowns and off of different hits! Not necessarily corner carry or for meter gain but the very same concept!

I understand this was a few years ago, but something that immediately helped me improve was priorising HOW you land a hit, and then worrying about getting damage off of it. It doesn't matter if I have a sick 5B starter Ragna combo in Blazblue that only works at close range if I'm only use 5B as a poke in neutral hitting ideally at its tip. In that situation, that entire combo has no value whatsoever: you don't win becuase you 'could' do more damaging confirms than your opponent. If I learn a cross under setup into close 5B, or set the muscle memory of the same combo from 2B's low mixup (leads to the same combo), then suddenly that combo has value. So instead I try and reliably land my 5B/2B at close range and THEN I learn the combo.

Made me realize that labbing isn’t always about finding some diabolical tech or mixup, definitely not when starting out. Really, it can be as simple as just seeing what is and isn’t safe.

I like writing things down as well: special moves, if things can be cancelled into other normals/specials/super/etc, even writing down what your impression of how the character is played can be helpful like "x move is a solid approach option" or "y move seems to be a good whiff punish" or even "z string seems to frame trap non-invincible reversals". Especially starting out when you don't have the muscle memory yet having a sheet of basic aspects of your character or like 2-3 simple combos and general gameplans can be really helpful. Like for example I was playing VSav a while back with Hsien-Ko and she has a command grab that if you negative edge it only comes out if it would hit so in my notes I put, "63214 MP/HP - negative edge command throw, can plink LP+MP to get medium command grab or LP gong if CG would whiff since gong uses the 214 input and there's no LP command grab"

My problem is with combos themselves i think..... the characters i choose are usually very hard or at the very least complex in some manner (not because i like to show off or because i choose them specifically by that, its more of unlucky actually). Like Naoto in blazblue or Yuzuriha in UNIST. Its their design, their gameplay and most of all the fun factor. But fuck me to learn their combos man. I already suck at fighting games and then this happens to me. fml

Combos are very tedious to learn but you can make it a lot more managable with a couple of techniques. 1. Break up the combo into sections that can be practiced individually 2. Notice the progression or buttons you're going to have push in each section, and focus on keeping your focus on these buttons. 3. With the motions for specials, notice how many times you're going to have to move the stick. For example, with a half circle you move the stick 3 times if youre holding back. You move down, then directly to down right passing over the down input, and then up slightly to forward. Try to start special motions as early as possible in your combos. 4. This is just something I do, but I make sure each of my hands can do each part of the combo individually, the left hand doing the motions and the right doing the buttons.

Brave Naoto player, you have my respect. Execution heavy character mostly can do godlike damage even you end the combo early/break combo up/change parts to make the combo more reliable. Like wow this is 5.8k but I can't do it, change it up a bit to do 5.3k but works every time.

Even if the character you chose is a character with difficult combos, that doesn't mean the combo you do has to be super difficult. You can start with a simple combo with any character.
@JK-gw9jb
@JK-gw9jb 3 года назад
@@liamfoote7164 Exactly, thank you. I feel like there's this common misconception with people learning fighting games where they "need" to learn the hardest combo on their "complex" character, when they don't even know how a game works or how the character even plays. Yuzu has a strong keep-away game with far-reaching normals that could be special canceled for pokes and punishes. Why do you need to learn hard combos if the opponent can't even get in to begin with? Learning how to properly space with her leads into combo opportunities that you could lab later, you could get by with pokes and punishes alone with simple combos. As for Naoto, there's no need to learn the hardest combos if you can't even get in to begin with. He's a mixup/pressure based character with short ranged moves that rely on winning neutral with superior reads and footsies. Trust me, you can get by with simple 2a>2a>filler>knockdown into jump attack/empty jump low, rinse and repeat. They're good habits to pick up too because all characters could use such a simple mixup. OP said it himself, he's admitted to not being that good at fighting games but blames that it's because he picks "hard/complex" characters. I'm sorry but if you're so high-strung about sucking, then combos are the least of your worries. Learn to zone and approach. Fundamentals>footsies>basic combos>add a bit>add a little more>advanced combos.

Questions like, how do I know if it's safe lol. Play someone and if they abuse you after you do it, stop. Training mode can only get you so good. I think the point Sajam is making is the hardest part about learning a character is actually playing them. Who cares how many combos you can do in training mode if you can literally never land them in an actual game. This is something i literally just learned like this year playing SFV after playing fighting games for almost 20 years casually. Sometimes combos are only really good if your opponent gives you a wide enough opening to do them. Don't try to go from Neutral into big damage 2bars confirm off a counter hit. Wait until you have them in a 50/50, counter hit them because they wanted to tech the throw, and THEN spend the 2 bars and get like 40%. If they whiff a DP, SLAM them with that training mode combo you practiced, that's called a punish. In Neutral all you usually want to do is get yourself into advantage by pushing them into the corner/knocking them down. Don't expect to get big combos or big damage, and don't hit those big buttons which might be good to start them because typically they are unsafe on block.

I get stuck at the combo part. I don't know how to use my moves to invent combos.
