Ponce de Leone was the guy who famously searched for the fountain of youth. This plays a central theme to the song - old warrior, getting "stung" in battle. As he dies, he feels time (our experience of life) itself bearing down. Lots of meaning for us aging types, battle worn by life, armor wearing thin.

It's about life and time and all of a sudden feeling your age and realizing you're getting old and relishing in the memories of what you could once do that you now find it harder to do or impossible. Struggling to stay relevant now you're looking for that "fountain of youth" to bring it back but realizing you can't, "false hope perhaps, but the truth never got in my way before now, feel the sting, feeling time bearing down". Facing the inevitable. I often felt it was a reflection of the band itself, and it's struggle to remain relevant and consequential among the music scene. To still have meaning for them at their age to still be able to perform at the peak of greatness even after their long hiatus.

As a 60 year old man, this song has become my battle cry! I feel every word to my core! The sonics are a perfect representation of a warrior marching off to a glorious final battle!!! What man could ask for more than to fight to the bitter end?!

Ponce de León was famous for searching for the fountain of youth. I feel this song is a reminder to do what you can while you still have the agency. There is sort of reliving the glory of the past of where I have been, tales told of battles won. When one spends too much time dwelling in the past they neglect the present. Just like agonizing over our own mortality can do the same. You CAN do something meaningful as long as you still draw breath. That is what I get from the last lines. Don't let the truth of mortality fool you into giving up before you are forced out. "False hope perhaps, But the truth never got in my way Before now" The limited time we have is not a spectre looming it is the horizon none of us can see over. Do not rush toward it instead maximize what you are able to do now where you are.

I’ve just seen the band in November in Connecticut. It cost me $1600 for 2 tickets first row side stage. I think the 100 pound tickets are no more but I could be wrong. BTW the same tickets I purchased 2 months before the show I could have sold for $2500 on the eve of show. I’ve been a fan since the beginning it was worth the money

"Of tales told, of battles won, of things we've done, Caligula would grin". Such a great lyric.

If I’m not mistaken I believe the sound engineer was a woman. Not sure her name, but it was mentioned in passing that I heard it was a female.

I saw Tool at TD Garden in Boston and I had box seats for 4. I cost me $1500 American. It was worth every penny, and I would have paid twice that to see them. It was amazing.

Caligula would grin…. Crazy under rated line…. Check out Lateralus with the boys but research the song a bit first and give them some background ( golden spiral, Fibonacci sequence etc) awesome… spiral out and enjoy…🌀out…. Keep going

Ponce de Leon founded the first European settlement in North America in 1516 in what is known as St. Augustine, Florida. He was from Spain. Florida was owned by Spain and was not part of the original 13 British colonies.

You would think at their ages they would instantly get the point of this song but they seemed to miss a lot of context sadly. I am a 62 year old woman and I sure feel the sting of time bearing down!

I interpret the song like others, as an aging warrior is going into battle yet again, he's thinking back on his victories of his younger self but realizing he may not be as "invincible" as he once was. He's always seen victory, but is apprehensive that he may not have it in him anymore. I see it as a double meaning as well, referring to Tool as a band as well as Maynard personally. Only knowing success with every release, but with 13 years since their last album they were "going into battle" once again, apprehensive of how the new album would be received. Will they "win" as they always have or has their time passed? I like to think of it as Tool's version of Pink Floyd's "Time".

Some of Tool's songs focus on the lyrics. This one's about the struggle to endure.

Maybe but I've had too much to drink but I think these videos are being uploaded out of order. If that is the case, as a Tool reaction enjoyer, I like to able to hear the songs being listened to by the people in temporal order, so I can see them go through it as they really would have. The normal way I do this is by upload date. I could, in theory, try to infer this by the opening statements... but it's kind of a pain in the ass to do that. Otherwise, love the reactions.
