Sam Cassell: Most talented role player in NBA history? | Forgotten Player Profiles

Sam Cassell is one of the most underrated scorers and combo guards of the last 30 years. From his rookies season, he showed that he wasn't afraid the big moments and his supreme confidence was apparent throughout his entire career. Although he played on 7 teams in his 15 year career, he was a fringe all star for more than half of those seasons. He was a perennial starter, averaging over 17 Points per game during stints with 3 different teams. He also knew how to win as he went to the playoffs with every team he spent at least one full season with. Cassell's confidence was a blessing and a curse as he wasn't the most consistent player, but he put in the work and became more reliable as he aged, as well as taking on a bench role without issue. Sam Cassell knew how to win, and although he might have had you pulling your hair out at times, at the end of the day you were glad if he was on your team.

Glad to see someone give Cassell his flowers. A hooper who maxed out his talents. Was valued in trades so much because his contract was always great. Bro outplayed his role-player contract and never garnered a star-level contract. Good vid, earned sub

Played against Sam Cassell twice in high school when he was at Dunbar High School in Baltimore. He played the exact same way in high school he did his whole career. I remember thinking when I played him the first time that I had matched up against better guards in the city. Lol. Even after he scorched me with an array of pull up jumpers from all over the court. Not overly athletic, he just knew how to play the game. Shoutout to Sam~ what’s most memorable for me is hearing the Dunbar cheerleaders dancing and singing everytime he would make a great play 🎵 Sam Cassell two s’s two L’s 😂 Awesome video

What HS did you attend, if you don't mind? I played against Sam and his Dunbar teams as well. What I can remember thinking the first time I played him was that he was a future NBA player. Thought his teammate Kevin Green had a shot, but he was a lock. That was 1987.

My favorite Buck of all time. Give him a baseline ISO situation, and he'll get you a bucket every time. He was also notorious for pulling up from the free throw line on fastbreaks. He'd make that shot like it was a lay-up. Absolutely sick midrange game this guy had.

Bucks fans knew he was big. We were "The Big 3" of the early 2000s. George Karl ripped apart one of the greatest Bucks teams in our History. After Karl said it's either Ray Allen or Me and traded Ray Allen Bucks would only have ONE single GD winning season in the next 14 years (Ray Allen Curse). It took a literal Greek God to save our franchise! Bucks were one of the best Franchises of the 80's and early 2000' then bad for 14 years straight. I became a Bucks fan in the Mid 1980's and Bucks never had a losing season the entire decade. Our 1987 team was my favorite with All-Stars Sidney Moncrief, Terry Cummings, Jack Sikma, and Rickey Pierce. Borderline All-Stars like Point Forward Paul Pressey averaged 14pts/8ast/5rbd which was outside of Magic unheard of for a Forward and Junior Bridgeman another borderline All-Star. PG John Lucas avg 17/7/3, three point snipers Craig Hodges and Scott Skiles. Coached by legendary Don Nelson.

You gotta be a young guy calling Sam Cassel forgotten. I get it, but for those of us old enough to watch these guys play each season he is far from forgotten. He’s not an iconic cultural star but very few far, but for your avg NBA fan especially those who are 30 and older Sam Cassel is known and remembered as one of the best most consistent PG in the league and had too tier performances for the bucks with Ray Allen and Glenn Robinson.
@ForgottenPlayerProfiles
@ForgottenPlayerProfiles Год назад
I feel that. I'm 28, so I won't sit here and say I remember his whole career, but some of my earliest nba memories are of his bucks years. I get that to the people that watched him, he's not forgotten, but I guess I mean forgotten in the sense that he had a big impact on the game during his years but his name is never gonna come up on any all time great conversations. So that's why I want to bring attention to him and every other player I cover on this channel, so the older generation can have some nostalgia and the younger generation can learn about someone they may not have heard of. Appreciate you watching the video though 💯

Yep, & two guys I hated for that team to lose. They could’ve brought back Sam, the went with Marbury one year as well but didn’t keep him. PJ was a huge loss & Posey even bigger because of his versatility. Timely shots. Defense. Don’t get me wrong the next year KG & his injury were the biggest reason they didn’t repeat but those guys would’ve helped out a lot. PJ retired & they brought in Rasheed so that was solid but those other guys were irreplaceable.

I appreciate this video. Sam Cassell is my all-time favorite player. First time I saw him was round 1 1998 playoffs vs Jordan. He was cooking them. From there is it was wrap. I followed Cassell from bucks to Wolves to Clippers to Celtics and guess what? He took the bucks the deepest they had been in the playoffs since Kareem to Game 7 in 01 vs Iverson sixers. Took the wolves to WCF furthest they had ever been. To the Clippers to Rd 2 Game 7 vs Championship contending Suns and was cooking Nash so bad they had Bell and Marion guarding him and was still cooking them. I played 3 years varsity basketball and was a complete carbon copy of Cassell. My mid range game was so good its helped keep playing in city leagues well in to my late 30s. One Dribble pull up, step back, etc. my GOAT. Please do Tayshaun Prince and Bruce Bowen. I love role-players they are crucial to the success of any team.

During his career I mostly hated Cassell because he played for other teams (I was a Knicks fan in 1994 when they lost to Cassell's Rockets). He hit the winning shot (a 3) in game 3 of the '94 finals against Knicks, and was an effective part of that team full of stars. He definitely was left out of too many All-star selections, and as you said was undervalued because of his situations more than anything. But he did get 3 rings! I wish he never played for the Rockets in 1994, but Starks (another underappreciated guard) went 2 for 18 in game 7 and Riley left him in.

I'll never forget Sam Cassel. In his 4 years with the Bucks he averaged 19/7/4 and should have reached the finals in 2001 but sadly Refs fixed the ECF series unspeakably against us just like they did the King the following year in 2002. The Refs called 43 more fouls on the Bucks than the Sixers in the series and worst of all the league suspended our best defender Scott Williams for game 7 to all but guarantee Allen Iverson made it to the finals. Bucks were robbed of a Finals appearance and it would be 20 more years until we finally made it and Won our first chip in 50 years! I hate the NBA Refs especially in the early 2000's.
