The First Black Mamba EDDIE JONES! Are You Satisfied With His Career?

Stunted Growth

Back in the 90s and early 2000s, there was a guy expected to have a career similar to one of the greatest shooting guards/players of all time, Kobe Bryant. Fast forward over 20 years later and some say he may not have lived up to that expectation. Personally, I think he landed in a nice spot as a player, making 3 Allstars, 3 All NBA defensive teams and played 14 seasons in the league. Many forget how good he was on both ends of the floor and because of his Growth Stunts he's usually lost in the shuffle of former shooting guards that were worth a watch! Find out what stunted Eddie Jones' growth Here.

Great upload. Every since 2005 I've always said that Eddie Jones career was like that classic Middle brother syndrome, he was never the problem but never the answer either, he was more of a alternative solution or steps to becoming the solution to the answer .Shaq was the dominant alpha big brother ,eddie was more of the laid back reactive middle child but was assertive on defense and being a team player and Kobe was like the hyper little brother that was proactive and grew to be assertive and efficient on both ends.This was a long time waiting.

@Andre Ricardo Bryant They traded Van Exel for the same reason Sacramento traded Jason Williams for Mike Bibby. They wanted steady and disciplined at the PG for a championship run which equaled Derek Fisher once they saw he had the chops. That's no knock on Van Exel, he would've been a waste in a PJ system.
@rashb3994
@rashb3994 3 года назад
That andShaq whined about Jones in his book for falling apart in the clutch and not believing he had what it takes, so that mixed with upper management wanting to give Kobe the full keys is what got Jones traded. They could've co-existed but management felt like Jones was stunting Kobe's full potential. Kobe wanted 30 shots a game not 20. I'm not joking. You can see it in games how shot hungry he was. I love him but early Kobe used to really frustrate vet teammates pretty bad sometimes.

One of the coldest point guards of the 90s and fun to watch with his clutch shooting and deceptive passing he didn't get enough credit for because he was breaking so many ankles along with his antics and his attitude overshadowed his greatness .

True,,the triangle was based on back picks and cuts and passing, Eddie Jones was a decent passer throughout his career and a good shooter a great slasher which the triangle offense would have been a easy transition for eddie Jones to trive in and it would have masked his only weakness which was his 1on1 ballhandles under pressure. Which was kobe's strength especially away from a passing offensive set. Kobes athleticism, iso skills alone kinda made Eddie Jones look like a Blackberry phone .but Eddie Jones still blended well with kobe

Eddie has always been my favorite Laker. I was crushed when he got traded. I was getting so excited that Phil was coming in and how perfect Eddie would be being a part of the triangle. 3 pt threat/slash down the baseline contribution. My first aol screenname was E25 Jones. I was also able to get his 25 jersey before he had to switch to 6.

Eddie Jones was a great player but the analysis that he got "overshadowed" by Kobe Bryant or that he was similar to Kobe Bryant I disagree with. He left for a team of his own in 99 and 2000 (Charlotte then Miami). Eddie Jones started out fast, good (not great) shooter, very good defender, quick, athletic. He didn't have the handle or ability to create his own shot like Kobe Bryant, Ray Allen, Allen Iverson (when he transitioned from pg to sg) or other super shooting guards of the era (even Allan Houston when Houston was healthy with the knicks even though he was known as a shooter). He had a respectable career but going into 98 it was expected that he'd be a top 20 league player, 6 or 7 time all star but that just didn't happen. Even though from 97-2000 he was a very impressive shooting guard, he didn't have the killer instinct of the 3 other shooting guards I mentioned and as a result, he just kind of became a respectable starting shooting guard instead of a perennial all star.
@arsonhakobyan
@arsonhakobyan 3 года назад
So he underachieved a little, but not a lot. He didn't have a near-Jordanesque ceiling like Kobe, but it actually wasn't his choice to go from LA to Charlotte. The Lakers traded him & Elden Campbell midseason for Glen Rice & JR Reid, right when the team began to play its best ball of the yr. It was a stupid trade, everything went downhill for the Lake Show after that till they hired Phil Jackson in the offseason, and rest was history. I thought of him as the new era's Michael Cooper when he burst onto the season for purple & gold. I think that Shaq & Kobe would've had a few yrs. longer championship window post-Phil w/o that trade, or they may have even won it in 99 for how well they started to play, and wouldn't have needed Phil. Or at least not till later if they couldn't keep it up w/ Kurt Rambis.

Eddie is one of my favorite players from the 90s, but I never considered him the next Jordan because of his quiet demeanor. He came into the league at age 23, which was older than other stars from the 94 draft like J Kidd, Grant Hill, and Glenn Robinson. Plus he was never the best player when he was with the Lakers. In in his first 2 years, Cedric Ceballos was the best player and some would say Nick Van Exel was second. Yes, he would have won more if he had stayed in Charlotte because that team was pretty stacked with guys like Anthony Mason, Elden Campbell, Derrick Coleman, David Wesley, Bobby Phills (RIP) and a young Baron Davis. When he went to Miami he was playing with an aging Tim Hardaway and an oft injured Alonzo Mourning. All in all, Eddie had a solid career.

I remember Eddie. Great player for sure. I don’t know if he ever would have become Jordan-esque under different circumstances but he was a solid player. Rotten luck for him to miss out on 2 titles by a year. He was traded for James Posey, Jason Williams right? A shame, I think he would have been a better contributor than Posey to that 06 Heat team.
