Earlier this year I picked up a new sandblaster. I’ve always wanted one for the shop because it makes cleaning and prepping parts so much easier. Along the way, I learned a few things about owning and using a sandblaster. In this video I talk about those things, as well as some basic info about how to use a sand blaster and dust reclaimer.
I hope you find this information useful!

I sometimes watch people restore old metal toys by sand blasting them and then powder coating them, it is an incredibly relaxing and satisfying thing to watch. It makes me want to get a sand blaster just because it looks like so much fun.

Eric, use 2 scoops or bowls of media in your blaster only. That way you keep recycling it until it just doesn't cut as well, THEN dump it. No need to contaminate 40 lbs at once. Plus it's a lot easier to clean out. Also, put a T in your air hose inside the cabinet with a small blow gun. Great to blowclean the parts,blow any media from the edges and the inside of the door before you open it. Works great !

Do your future self a favor and research Sandblaster mods. A little time investment on the front end will reap exponential rewards later. (PS Love you man, Been watching since you were in the old barn and no facial hair.) What you have is a Great start (The pickup tube is nice on that unit) 1) Adding the Bottom siphon mod with a media control valve will allow you to drop the incoming pressure to 40-60 PSI. Which will save strain on your Air compressor. 2) Check out Mods that cover adding baffles or path ways for the reclaiming vacuum air to flow across the part and cross flow across the cabinet. 3) Reclaimed media.... I would throw it in the trash and not reuse it... The reason being is that media also contains all of the RUST, impurities and paint that you just removed from the object you blasted. when the media goes through the gun the second time with the contaminates it will be slammed and imbedded in to the part you are blasting. This isn't so much huge deal.... But if you blast anything with Silicone (Gasket material) that silicone will get picked up and embedded into the metal which can cause issues with bubbling when you go to paint or weld. (PS scrape or wire wheel all of the silicone off your parts before blasting ;-)) 4) Good note on the RAW metal and gloves.... one down side to sandblasting automotive parts specifically is that Since the late 80's early 90's OEM's used some form of E-Coating on the bolts and parts. Sand blasting REMOVES this coating.... Phosphorus or plated bolts are particularly an issue here... I learned the hard way... I have some nice shiny brackets on my project car but after 3 months the heads of the bolts rusted because of no protective coating. This is why E-Coating kits have become popular in the last few years.... (But check with disposal procedures in your area before purchasing an e-coat kit the chemicals involved can be caustic) 5) add Castors and a floor to the bottom of the unit. this way you can pull it out and sweep around it.

1. Get yourself a pedal switch and gun from eastwood; way better than trigger style... tried both... 2. Is that a 3/8" hose? If it is a 1/4" then upgrade to at-least 3/8th you are killing your cfm... although if you have 150 psi going up to the cabinet it is not as bad as regulating to 60 or even 90 at the source. 3. cyclone separator inline with shop vac works well. media stays in cyclone, dust goes into the shop vac. Will need a weak shop vac or regulate it down with AC motor speed controller.

Technically its a blast cabinet, here Eric is using glass bead media, not bad for cleaning some stuff up and rusty bolts, but you can also get aluminum oxide sand blast media which works quicker and better depending on the application, it will have a rougher finish though. I've done parts where i sandblasted first and then smoothed it out with glassbeading but that was easier to do with 2 different dedicated cabinets, 1 strictly for sand blasting and 1 for glassbeading. You will also need different nozzles in the gun to hold up the type of media. Depending on the setup and cabinet you can also run steelshot through it, but reguardless a hude thing to take away from this is that reguardless of media these are basically self destructive machines they will degrade and maintenance def has to be done to keep them good. Also super important dont breath the shit in itll never leave your lungs.

I just want to mention, for anyone without a garage, most communities of any size are likely to have a "U-Blast-it" place where you pay by the minute and do it yourself. Most reasonably sized pieces will not take more than 10 minutes or so. The place near me also has a heavy-duty parts washer which will clean anything up to and including engine blocks.
@flyboy61b
@flyboy61b 3 года назад
I have the same one. I did away with the "tear aways" and use just the glass with the plexiglass over cover. Replacement glass pieces (at Lowe's) are about $1.50 each if you buy a full sheet and have them cut it up for you). I also replaced all the nuts and bolts that hold the glass frame on with riv-nuts for much easier access. Most of the joints leaked and I was getting a lot of abrasive leakage. When I had the window frame off I caulked all of the joints and that solved the problem. The only other change I will make will be a different gun (no trigger) and a foot switch for the air.

Hey Eric. Good video. That is a handy blaster for small parts. I got a blaster like the one you showed last on the shelf. I just can't seem to get mine working right. It starts out great, then it stops picking up the medium. I tried aluminum oxide and glass bead. And had the same results. I don't have the instructions for it because it belongs to my son and he misplaced the manual. I am running it full blast and it won't pick up the sand. Maybe the air is set too high. I will try lowering the pressure. Thanks for sharing.🍁👍👍

Shake the tank from time to time. While you're blasting it will make a 'hole' in the media as it draws it out. I have to 'smack' the side of my blaster from time to time while I'm using it to get the media to feed again. Good luck and thanks for the comment.

I used to repair all the electronics/column switches/speedos/flasher units/ and much more. Most had a metal case that looked horrible ( Rust and muck hell ). The sand blaster was brilliant for cleaning them and the rough texture was ideal for primer and paint.:-D But i used to get shocks off the metal nozzle, and the inside of the gun just vanished over time. The boss never looked into coatings for the glass, a fog horn would have been at home in that cabinet lol.

I bought a very similar unit from Harbor Freight a couple months ago and yours seems to work much better. You said your operating pressure should be between 40 and 80 PSI, whereas mine said to run at 90 and I'm constantly having trouble with media not being fed through the gun. Have you had any similar issues? I'm thinking maybe the higher pressure is overpowering the media from feeding consistently.

For the external blaster will you be doing it outdoors, or will you instead build a Dexter-style 'kill room' to keep the sand/dust contained indoors? Always been curious to find a way to use a pot blaster in suburbia without making a mess of the backyard or pissing off the neighbors!

Best way to clean a spark plug is to use a propane torch get it cherry red when it cools off just air blow it clean. Sand you will get that in your engine no matter how you try to get it off the spark plug. Have not bought a new spark plug for lawn mower or any 2 cycle engine in years. Mapp gas make the spark plug get hotter faster.

How much warping do you find when blasting? I have a big surface I need to blast and trying to find a blaster big enough to to blast a panel but worried about warping panel due to heat

You can turn the psi down to help prevent that. You do need to be careful with thin metals though. Also, the media you use will have an effect. I'm not an expert on this, but I'm sure that info is out there somewhere on what media is best for thin metal. Good luck and thanks for the comment.

I got to buy one of those some day - been wanting one for years. If my '07 Silverado would just stop breaking, maybe I will! On day 3 of getting everything out of the way for the tranny swap. Damn nut rounded off on the manifold flange. Battled with the other 5 - I think GM torqued them to 4,500 Ft. Lbs.. Finally broke the stud with the rounded nut with Big Nasty moments ago, after welding a nut on and snapping the stud in half. Had it red hot, too. I've never seen metal this hard for an exhaust system!! Also had to melt what used to be nuts off the muffler flange studs. Total nightmare! I'd quit if I had to do transmissions on the 900-series trucks all day, every day, LOL! Done my 3PM lunch - time to go back to battle.

Not sure if you mentioned it, however using cheap play sand is not really saving you much in the long run. Silicosis is real, and it doesn't take a years of daily exposure to mess you up. Local abrasives company sold me of 50# steel grit for $45, as it can be re-used 1000-1500 times. Working pretty nicely.

Also, Tractor Supply has one for like $100 with light. I just get some nice LED's from eBay and patchthem into the 7-12v wall wart with a resistor. These are simple enough to make from wood or sheet metal if you can bend them or have a brake.

Please do a video on the pressure pot blaster. I got myself one identical to yours and it absolutely sucks. It always clogs. You get about 10 seconds of blasting and then it clogs. Air is dry and the media is clean. I have to shake the pot and then it starts blasting again.

There are larger cabinets available but I'm not sure if they would be big enough for body panels. You might consider the other blaster I showed in the video that doesn't require a cabinet.

Yes, there is every size possible available. Truly commercial units, not made in China. But the prices are reflected in their unique specialty uses. I had one ordered for my HS auto shop class. It was a couple thousand for the bare bones unit. Lots of options. The kids loved using it and it was relatively indestructible.

Don't reuse the dust collected from glass bead...it is just a fine powder with no abrasive properties left and decreases the overall efficiency of the remaining media in the cabinet. That cabinet will also do pretty well if you ever want to try soda blasting...

@ericthecarguy

I think you can use it until it gets too dirty to use. Not sure when that would be exactly. It would depend on how much you use it I suppose. Also, be sure to only sandblast dry materials and not things covered with grease and oil. That will gum up the media for sure.
