Continuing our narrowboat renovation, we start the somewhat tedious task of sanding back the varnished wood. Once that’s out of the way, it’s on to the fun part - painting! We’re not sure if we like the amount of light that now comes into our room of a morning though... 😅 Joking aside, we love the amazing transformation that a few coats of paint have made!

No matter how long you are married the DIYs just keep coming. Here in Raleigh NC we are currently sanding, mudding and painting our spare bedroom/husband's office. After 50 years ,you would think it would all be done by now! Think we will take a break and watch your next cooking video. Thanks for all the laughs you give us.

These boaters get quarantined and all they can do is paint and boat maintenance. Watching their paint dry was a bit more beautiful than David's patch job. 😏

I just watched a fabulous spacecraft launch from Cape Canaveral by young bright things .. and now I find those other amazing bright young things from the other side of planet are reshaping a whole boat. This human enterprise and expenditure of energy is totally overwhelming. I'm not sure whether Bob and Doug in their tiny capsule or Ryan and Maggie in their tiny cabin are the most amazing today. But the boat wins on "kissy costs".... yep ...it's good to be young. Totally hilarious industry Superwoman. .but soooo exhausting to watch. .. Ta for the vlog. Reality TV can't touch this.

It looks lovely. The required joke, you can come paint my place now... FYI, if you are going to be using rollers or brushes within 24 hours, you can wrap them in plastic wrap or drop them in plastic bags and rubber band them closed, and they'll be usable the next day. That is what painters do. Can't wait to see it all done. It really does look lovely and brighter in there.

Hey guys, excellent job on your preparation, and the end result looks fantastic. I worked in the Paint Dept at Bunnings (I’m guessing you understand who they are :) )for nearly 10 years, and I have a tip. When doing multiple coats you can wrap your brushes and rollers in those plastic fruit and veg bags in between coats. You can also put your roller tray in a plastic bag. Nothing will dry out and it saves a lot of time and water. I have to confess that sometimes I’m a lazy renovator and leave my gear in plastic overnight - no probs. Hope you get to read this before you continue with your painting, cheers Deb :)

Hi Deb, good old Bunnings! 😂 Yeah, we definitely used the plastic trick especially while doing the rest of the boat, thanks! Saves a lot of water and washing up!

Super job, looks so much better now! i hope you dont mind another tip ? if you want to fill that hole. spray a small amount of expanding foam into the hole let it bubble out of the hole a little leave until is gone hard, then snap it off scrap about 3 or 4 mm out then fill it & sand.

I'm enjoying the videos.... I always use an old soup ladle to transfer the paint into the tray, that way you don't get paint drips down the side of the paint tin.... T/c

Ryan "The Kitchen Slave" with "Superwoman" Maggie. What a title for a movie? For the hole, take a piece of thin wood, maybe a piece of paneling, paint steerer, popsicle sticks, tongue depressor, that you can slide thru the hole, with a good length of wire or string attached to it in the middle like you are sewing a button. While holding the wire or string, you push the wood patch, that has some glue on it, all the way into the hole. Pull it against the back of the wall paneling thus gluing the patch to the back of your paneling. Then take something and wrap the wire or string around it to hold your patch while the glue sets. After the glue sets, cut the wire or string and fill in the hole with filler, prime and finish painting. No Hole! Looking great.

Wonderful! Now - in a few years when you sell your boat and all-wood becomes fashionable again, some poor sod will be doing a video of how he removed all your white paint by passing his iPhone 21 over the affected areas and magically took it back to pure wood again!lol. You guys are doing a great job. A thought.....could you not have slept on your Mom and Dads boat and slid your bed on edge into the hallway?? A little tip if you are using the same colour paint you can always tightly wrap the roller heads in cling film until the next day, brush heads too if water and cleaning is a bit of a problem. Works like a charm. Keep safe and well.

Thanks for the tip! We did think about staying on mum and dad’s boat but their “mattress” is basically just foam and quite uncomfortable. We’re not willing to put up with that even for a night! 😂

Having painted lots of things. Walls, floors, all my kitchen furniture - lately inside my kitchen cabinets - wood to white. Wouldn’t you have found it quicker to use a 10” roller for the ceilings (the roof is outside on top to me) and walls and a paint brush for the edges. Those tiny rollers cover so little it’s really hard work.

Well you finally got started, good for you. Use a scraper or butter/dinner knife to push the edges into seam for clean cuts. The whole you have, but you are done so, put tape on back side a couple layers and fill it in. If any show up ( not Maggies fault) on wall back fill with news paper, putty stick well to it. And never take a flash picture 😎

tie a string to the middle of a pencil, put it in the hole, pull it tight and tie it to another pencil on the outside, fill the hole, then when its dry cut the string off at the wall, then paint over it..... please do the outside roof before winter. looking at it is painful!!!!

Maybe cut that hole out square or circular and then glue in an insert replacement piece of wood from the cabinets you pulled put. Or put a light switch in... :)

Do you not have tac cloth there? It's how we treat things after sanding them here? It is a sticky cloth that the dust would stick on?

When I sanded my bedroom, the dust was in the air for a week or two after it was nasty. It went all over the house.

the hole that Maggie said was too big to fill isn't too big as you could have used a compound called PLASTIC WOOD which would have filled it and lasts longer than using Polyfilla, also when applying more than one coat of paint you are suppose to put each coat on differently from the first, i.e if the first coat gets put on vertically then the following coat should be applied horizontally that way it coats all dark areas left from first coat, and the same method is used to apply the top coats,

I notice the paint is in a plastic can. I guess I won’t make any snarky remarks aimed at those who freak out at fossil fuels. Maybe they don’t realize the list of things we need made partially or wholly from fossil fuels would probably stretch to the moon and back. But the bedroom looks lovely now you’re done.

Paint is sold in tin or plastic cans, both use fossil fuel in the making, both can be recycled or just used about the boat for other purposes. I'm using plastic paint buckets from when we built our house 10 years ago. Thy are very handy in the garden for watering and making liquid manure gathered from the grazing cattle that pass by each day. Some of the buckets are starting the decay, so a bury them and grow mint in them this stops the roots spreading like mad. Don't get me wrong I too hate plastic and we market shop with our own wicker baskets for local produce, refuse plastic bags and choose the least packaged goods at the supermarket. Stay safe.

Hate to be negative but when I was looking to buy a boat. The ones that had painted over their wooden interiors were 10k cheaper as nobody wanted a painted interior. I feel like crying when I see beautiful hardwood painted over. I know personal choice but a decent sander and some linseed oil preserves the original look.

Fair enough, but we have to live on it for the time being and prefer the lighter look. Also, the walls are most definitely not hardwood, just MDF with a thin wood veneer.

Generally speaking, when you’re under it, it’s a ceiling. When you’re standing on it, it’s a roof!

I would take issue with that. The roof is the outer shell that makes it resistant to the weather and the ceiling is fastened inside to cover things like insulation and services like wiring or can be just for decoration but they are two completely different things. Also, a ceiling can have another floor above it but not on a narrowboat as bridge clearance could be an issue. I think we all knew what Maggie meant and that is what communication is about. I like the colour and think the borders would look good in a similar green to the masking tape.

It seems that you are doing all the hard physical work while your husband doesn’t seem to do anything. 😩 is that true or is he just filming? Sorry I notice he is really helping too. You two seem to be the stillest most happy couple I’ve ever seen. It’s so nice to see such a truly happy couple. I’m glad that I’ve found your channel but now I need to try to catch up😩 I’ve seen some of the recipes and so far they look delicious. The job would go so much faster if you had a larger roller, why use such a small roller?
