I love the last bit where each of them watches her walking away, with both a wonder and a longing in each of their eyes. Each of them falling in love with her, utterly charmed by her, and charmed by what is coming over them, the different oddly shaped pieces of the puzzle coming together in a fit. Finally. Sigh.

It’s almost as if all three are spellbound by Charlotte! They literally look like they are hypnotised by her. How can you not…. her kindness, and openness and gentleness (I would have lost patience with Augusta by now, but she does not) She just opens her heart to them and brings some happiness and liveliness with her presence. Rose Williams is so perfect as Charlotte! ❤

Can you imagine. ladies. that Ben Lloyd-Hughes also auditioned for the Col. Lennox role. I'm sorry, but I cannot see him playing that wicked cad. He also auditioned for two parts in S1 (I wonder which roles) and when he didn't get either, refused to watch the series out of spite. Then when he got this role, he didn't want to watch and have his performance influenced by what came before. I think fate did us a solid when BLH got passed over and got this role instead.

And again he saw her coming up the walk to apply to be his governess. I also have to believe that unless she was a total imbecile he'd already made up his mind to hire her. I am quite certain some conversation occurred between the girls about Miss Heywood; if not in Alexander's company, at least with Mrs. Wheatley. She rang the front door bell but no one answered because they knew who was there and what her role was going to be. So she was "directed" to the employee entrance. She'd already been "interviewed, hired and arrived 'on board'. At least in my observation and opinion☺

An important turning point in AC's relationship with his niece. I love the touch of awkwardness in his attempt to engage Augusta in conversation, and she meets it with the usual attempt to get Charlotte in trouble and needling him about Lucy. But by the end, his teasing comment that Augusta is incapable of smiling has a gentleness that his words in earlier episodes have lacked. Looking at Augusta's eye rolls in response to Leo's and AC's teasing, I can't help but think it is not entirely unwelcome attention. There is a hint of a suppressed smile there.
@susanfirth9883

If Charlotte hadn't told Mr. Colbourne earlier about Augusta feeling she was an "unbearable burden" and if Augusta hadn't made the comment about how she thought he would rather do anything else but join them, (followed by Charlotte's meaningful glance), I wonder if Mr. Colbourne would have stopped to join the picnic? Charlotte's super-power appears to be her ability to know when to tease, cajole, or scold to get the best response.

The writers were very clever in choosing cornflowers for Colbourne to give to Charlotte, for in the language of flowers they have many meanings. Very good point. And I love how they shot the scene with Leo and Charlotte collecting snails, with Augusta in the background against the tree, wanting SO MUCH to not care what they are talking about, but drawn in. Then when she tells Leo to get the magnifying glass, she has that same troublemaking look on her face, knowing that her uncle will be displeased at the intrusion. The picnic finally wears down her defenses. I think it's that her uncle teases her with "Augusta is incapable of smiling" and it makes her feel the warmth of family again. ❤️

When Augusta says her uncle never speaks of his dead wife, it appears she thinks he didn't love her or something. However, I watch a lot of true crime documentaries and twice recently family members of murder victims have reported: 1. a son who couldn't say his dead father's name for ten years without crying, 2. the sister of a murder victim said her parents never mentioned their dead daughter's name again. It was just too painful. I realize that murder adds an extra special trauma to a family members death, but Lucy Colbourne's circumstances were also quite painful for her husband. I read in another post where the commenter thought Mr. Colbourne never loved his wife, but I disagree. I think he wouldn't have been so wounded if he didn't love her, nor would he have felt the need to keep her portrait on the wall.
