I loved how quick Sansa was on "I give you your brother's head" and she was "Or maybe he will give me yours" and after slapped, she was ready to toss him over the side. The North remembers..
Sansa's relationship with the Hound is glossed over in the TV series. In the books, it's pretty clear he didn't care much about Joff: he saves Sansa more than once. Actually, that scene when she plans to throw Joff off was one of the best filmed in the series. The Hound saves her or tries to help her more than once in the books.
***** I think at this particular point, she would have just grabbed him and took both of them down. It wasn't like there was railing. She was pissed she lost her father, her direwolf, and was blame a painted a traitor to all in King's Landing. I think she would have taken both of them over. She had that look in her eye. Really good acting.
Isa M I wonder if some of the Hounds sympathy and affection for Sansa doesn't come from the fact her Uncle and Grandfather were burned alive by the Mad King, vis a vis, the Lannisters. Himself being burned as he was? I dunno if that is stretching it, but stranger things motivate people. We saw how he reacted at the Battle of Blackwater Bay, and he hid in her room, and offered to take her back to Winterfell. He ends up with Arya. I think he felt empathy for the Starks in general.
It's important to remember that Sansa's never probably been slapped her entire life. Maybe by Arya, but those slaps Merryn gave her left her bleeding. And she barely reacted.
Most people don't remember scenes like this when they talk about Sansa There's this general idea that she wasn't interesting or tough or smart or vengeful until late in season 4 or so, but she always had the Stark fire in her
Yes! I always saw that Stark Northerness in her, it was very subtle, like Ned’s was. Most of the North were rough rough like Robb, Bran, Rickon, Arya, Lyanna, Benjen, Brandon, but Sansa and Ned’s northnern wildness was quiet and patient. They didn’t want to hurt other people, but they loved their family fiercely and had strong morals. They were subtle, but strong.
shinylungs she's different from what modern audiences that love instant amusement over character development are used to. people dislike what they aren't used to. they're used to Aryas, Ashas, Mormont women, etc. Sansa is new- feminine, cautious, artsy, introspective. oh, and she has the gall to make mistakes (like Arya, Jon and other popular characters never have apparently, lol). seriously, Sansa is a smart, basically kind person with human weaknesses doing the best she can, as you said.
shinylungs She was perfectly okay with Joffrey torturing the butcher's boy and almost killing her sister. I'm not talking about the lying afterward which is perfectly understandable, but when Joffrey was swinging a sword at her sister she was only concerned about how this could spoil their relation. If Arya wasn't as quick and swift she'd be dead and Sansa wouldn't be that much affected.
shinylungs People started disliking her after she came off as a pampered bitch and showed little concern for Arya. But most people like her now. I mean after what she's been through, you can't really hate her.
I think she would have cared if Arya died, but yes before that could happen she wasn't concerned about Arya being in danger. Maybe because she knew how fast her sister can be, Arya's physical agility was well known by then.
+shinylungs Because Sansa ratted her own father out on Cersei. It's what made Cersei become suspicious. But it's also what somewhat caused Ned to get arrested and framed for a crime he didn't commit. It's what got Ned to have his head chopped off despite that Littlefinger was the real traitor who mainly sold him out to Cersei. The reason why Sansa also gets the hate is because she didn't want to acknowledge that Joffrey was an evil fuckface. Didn't want to accept that he tried to fatally wound her sister Arya. Let's not forget that Sansa had blamed her father for killing Lady when it was Cersei and Joffrey who should have received the blaming. They killed her wolf. Not her father. It's not just all about Sansa betraying her younger sister and her father. It's about betraying her whole family. Even though I do a feel a little sorry for Sansa being forced to look at her father's head on a stick, she knows that she's paying the terrible price.
Adel Sabet ... How can you treat people like that and live when you try to walk 'cross the street' ?, the guy who played Joffrey may have actually needed a 'King's Guard' during day to day activities.
ThePabloG30 He says people were friendly to him lol maybe because he lives in Ireland. If he were american, idk what people would do here...I mean we riot when out favorite team loses or wins.
1:43-1:55 Sansa was really going to kill Joffrey there. If the Hound hadn't stopped her, Joffrey would have fallen to his death. How can anyone hate her after seing that?
Lunahandycap she would’ve killed herself before cersei could get her. In the books, her thoughts were shown and she was going to jump with him. She didn’t want to live anymore, and she wanted to take joffey with her.
They dont hate her but it’s like grow a backbone and kill this coward. In most scenes she comes off very weak and mindless. Now she’s a completely different person.
Say what you will of Sansa, but I will always respect her for this moment alone. Even as the Lannisters are in the process of breaking her down into their "little dove," she still musters all the courage of a wolf to threaten Joffrey and mean it. She'll always be one of my favorite characters. On a side note, I never realized how utterly shocked and disappointed Joffrey was at her reluctance between 0:50 and 0:58. It was as if she turned down his beloved stamp collection. He really thought she would be impressed. Like, "I think heads on spikes are cool. Why don't you think they're cool? My wife should like what I like."
TheCandymusiclover He was thrilled to show her his collection of heads but I kinda felt like he was disappointed when he didn't see her crying afterwards (when she looked up at Ned's head). Like he was expecting her to wail or kneel or something.
We all know Joffrey is a sadistic bastard so he wanted to see Sansa's horrified reaction to Ned's head. But Sansa knew what he wanted so as a quiet act of defiance she became stoic and said "how long will I have to look?" To deny him the satisfaction.
It's hinted many times that Ser Meryn didn't get his position in the Kingsguard because of his skills. Every other swordsman in the city knows this, and even Tyrion belittles him.
I always interpret Sansa's non-reaction to being slapped in 2 parallel ways 1) a slap in the face is peanuts compared to the trauma of witnessing her beloved father's execution ordered by her future husband 2) she is so filled with rage at Joffrey for what he did she barely feels it, because her anger is so intense
"Or maybe he'll give me yours." I kinda wish it was Sansa who killed Joffrey at the Purple Wedding. Would it have been predictable? Yes Would it have been extremely gratifying?: HELL YES!
Who says it wasn't? Remember, Martin has stated that Sansa is not a reliable narrator. Perhaps she has been up to a lot more than we realize, or than she is saying.....
Meryn Trant is really as weak as they say lol , Sansa was a pampered lady for her whole life , probably have never felt pain, those slaps barely affected her
m a r i a h Yeah. Like, Robert Englund is one of the sweetest, nicest men ever, but when he plays Freddy Krueger he somehow transform himself into a purely evil bastard. Uh....no pun intended.
She takes the beating like a boss not because she is emotionally traumatized but because she is a very stoic and resilient individual. proof is right after the double slap, she is already figure out away to kill Jeoffrey on the spot. She is not traumatized at all, she is stoic and resilient!
Phelton Phive She was angry. Nothing hurts you when you're angry. I remember being so infuriated with my mom, and when she slapped me, I just stared at her. No pain. And another thing is that she expected him to slap her, her mind was ready for the slap in a split second, that's why she didn't react to it much. Our brains work in wonderful ways don't they?
The Hound might just be the only GoT character with intelligence, bravery, strength and a code of honor; even if it's his own code. He really seems to me like a true paladin -- lawful evil.
A year late for this comment, I disagree Strength, yeah but the rest? idk He ran away from the battle of blackwater bay, what bravery is that? (idc about trauma he still ran away) Afterwards saying fuck the king, a king he is currently serving, what honor is that? And intelligence? idk man, he relies more on instincts than intelligence He's not even lawful, he's not even evil. Like the previous comments, he's more of a chaotic neutral who takes any side depending on his situation with barbaric or unlawful ways
Lawful evil would be Tywin, in Starks perspective. Lawful good -Jon, Greyworm Lawful neutral -Littlefinger or Varys or maybe Tyrion too? Chaotic good - Dany Chaotic evil -Mad King, Ramsey
I wonder what would have happened if Ned had simply left King's Landing, joined forces with Stannis and had united the whole North to overthrow Joffrey.
TheDeralte They would win in a landslide victory. The North and Stannis united would be invicible and if Renly had given into Stannis and had the tyrells backing him well yeah the Lannisters would be wiped out from existence.
The moment she accepted to look at her father's head was the moment she actually started to play the game of thrones. You see it in her words "How long do I have to look" "If it pleases you your grace" "Or maybe he'll give me yours" She has the wildness of North in her!
"And as soon as you've had your blood I'll put a son in you." ... "Mother says that shouldn't be long." Just casually talking about how you're going to impregnate you fiancée after her period is over... No big deal...
Plus the fact that the writers decided to turn her into an absolute pyschopath over night. Sure she's been brutal and cold since season 2, but she still had morals in season 6 yet somehow since returning home she's a maniac who threatens to murder her sister.
Enma Enigma no Sansa had a chance to get herself killed here that’s why the hound stopped her... if she killed the king she would’ve been killed 100% that’s exactly why arya could never survive what Sansa did arya would have tried to kill Joffrey or Cersei every chance she got and would’ve been killed
@@kdvn1 Yeah, but she didn't care? Not at that moment. Just watching him die before she met her end would've thrilled her deeply I'm sure. But after this, she doesn't do something that drastic again.
TheWolves24 yeah I know but she was doing it out of grief her father was just killed and she felt helpless so she was ready to give up.. I don’t think she actually wanted to die she just felt like she couldn’t do anything else - and yeah she never did anything drastic after that because in season 2 u see she adapted to the politics and playing the game like going along with what ppl say and making sure she does not seem like a threat and she manipulates Joffrey multiple times to either save a person or try to get him to kill himself - one example is during the black water battle and she told him her brother goes where the fighting is thickest she was convincing Joffrey to do that so he’d hopefully die so in a way she did continue to do drastic things it just couldn’t be obvious so she wouldn’t get caught
1:50 and for the first time you get a glimpse of the direwolf in this previously flibbertigibbet little girl-- a preview of the iron-willed woman who will emerge from all her suffering.....
1:48 First appareance of the Wolf Blood. Remember what Eddard said to Arya : "You have a wildness in you, child. 'The wolf blood,' my father used to call it. Lyanna had a touch of it, and my brother Brandon more than a touch."
MrTermiOne it wasn’t the first appearance. wolf blood is bravery, strength. Sansa showed that when she begged for her father’s life in front of hundreds of people who call for her family’s head.
I love how The Hound always stand by Sansa's side and always there to defend and help her for some reason.. But it's also kinda weird bcs it makes the fans want Sansa and Sandor as a couple. Meanwhile Sandor is probably just as old as her father
It seems to be more that Sandor doesn't like people using power they didn't earn and don't deserve picking on those weaker, probably sees a lot of his brother in Joffrey
Brilliant acting here... her empty eyes, her voice, everything is perfect about that scene. It's like she's numb from too much pain - the way she stares at the heads makes me shiver every time, you can literally see something breaking in her.
"Or maybe he will give me yours." That right there tells you that Sansa has a fighting spirit. The slap that she takes and still standing confirms it. Sansa being naive is because she did not understand how the real world works. Seeing her father killed and most of her family were murdered made her realize that she had to be strong. Septa Mordane told Sansa that it's important to know where you are from. Sansa is from the North. And the North remembers.
I going to say this again, I'm telling you, Sansa is going to come out the best of all her Siblings. While she didn't learn to fight or gained visions, she learned something much more powerful. She learned how to survive. She studied under the unwilling toolage of Cersei, and she learned how to be a woman in a man's world.
I knew Sansa will become stronger when I watched this scene : handles some slaps like a rock, the look she has and the wish to kill Joffrey. Alot of people still underestimate her
This whole scene was a fucking disgrace : Sadistic Joffrey putting Honorable Ned's head on a stick and letting pedophile sadist Trant beat up sweet Sansa. Only good things Sansa replying Joffrey and the Hound helping her.
That's what made it so powerful. Over the span of less than three minutes we get detailed characterization of three different characters: we learn exactly how absolutely ruthless and deranged Jeoffrey really is, that even Sansa has some very specific limits to her apparently neverending tolerance for pain and humiliation, and that deep down Hound is very compassionate even if he doesn't want others to think that. Pure cinematic gold.
all things considered Sansa is probably the toughest Stark. Consider: RICKON *rimshot* ROBB nice kid, has guts, would do great in normal fantasy but ultimately all he manages to do is remind us that Game of Thrones is not normal fantasy BRAN magic powers and all + steps up to the plate when he has to, but so far basically everything he's done has been thanks to people who are braver, more selfless, and/or smarter than him ARYA hard AF, but got there thanks to levels of luck + natural talent + positive role models that Sansa could only dream of SANSA survived years of unspeakable physical + emotional trauma to become one of the two or three most powerful women in Westeros basically thanks to nothing but natural cunning and a boatload of sheer motherfucking grit.
Sansa had nerves of steel from the get go, it just took her a while to fully realise it and utilise it. The way she turned up the dial to stone cold when she said 'or maybe he'll bring me yours' was truly a sign of things to come.
You know this is when I start to like her. The whole first book and season she is shockingly shallow and petty. In the books anyway Arya heeds her father advice and tries to make common cause with her sister, to which Sansa responds meanly. After this her world view is shattered, and she starts to learn more truths and become stronger. Now she is just as likeable as Arya to me. I hate to say it but Ned's death was the best thing to happen to her
"Sansa responds meanly" Well Arya's antics got her wolf killed. A part of her as much as ghost and summer were a part of jon and bran, and Arya literally said she wanted to "kill Sansa" or soemthing vut later admits she didn't mean it. So sansa's rejection of her advances isn't mean at all. It's very much earned
I really overlooked Sansa on my first viewing of the series... and therein lies her power as a character. People overlook and underestimate her. Even as a naive child she had a lot of fight in her, and in hindsight this scene was very telling.
I always wondered back then why he slapped her twice like that. After watching season 6 its as bronn said he's better at beatin little girls than fighting men 😂
Hearing Sansa say to Joffrey that maybe her brother will give her Joffrey's head is so satisfying. It's the first time she actually stands up to him without being afraid.
This scene was such a kick in the gut. I mean, seeing perhaps the most loved character being killed in the last episode was bad enough but then showing us the decapitated head of said character? Brutal. It’s horrible to see poor Ned like that.
"Or maybe he'll give me yours." I remember how astounded I was the first time I heard Sansa's answer, because I didn't expect she'd be so sassy at that moment. I mean, the girl just saw her father being executed then found out the same happened to Septa Mordane who carried her upbringing out; she didn't only lose people she held dear, she also lost her points of reference. But still, she managed to burn the lil inbred prick then kept a straight face after having been slapped. That's my girl!
Wow, props to this kid. In Batman he was just sort of... annoying. In this... holy hell, I'm imagining deaths for this kid that would make Tarantino turn green.
Because she's the real reason for which Ned's plan to take Joffrey, Myrcella, Tommen and Cersei under his custody and give Stannis the throne is discovered. She run off to Cersei the moment Ned talks to her about leaving King's Landing. Sure, Littlefinger could've betrayed Ned even if Cersei didn't suspect a thing, but she's the reason why Ned is summoned sooner then expected.
Andxel2 Bullshit. It was Renly's idea to take the royal children into custody to seize the throne (and for himself, not for his brother Stannis), and Ned declined him saying that he would not attack innocent children nor would he plot about it while his friend (Robert) was living his last hours on Earth. Ned was going to send his two daughters back to Winterfell as he exposed the truth behind Joffrey, Myrcella and Tommen's lineage to the whole world and claimed Stannis Baratheon to be the one true king of Westeros.
***** I guess she knows in the game of thrones you win or you die. When you want to live you'll do what it takes. It's loyalty that can get you killed.
I really dislike Sansa for the first book and season. She acts really immature and selfishly, while Arya listens to her father and tries to be adult. However as soon as Ned dies Sansa grows as a character. Now I like her as much as Arya, but in the beginning... she was awful.
RockyJames121 and you know this how? are you the great author of this series who wrote the books that the show was based on?!?!? No... all I see I some random dude. The author created the story, so only he knows. Not you.
God! When she looked up at the end and fought back tears. I truly started to root for Sansa then. The look in her eye as she went to take Joffery down. I knew she had fight in her!
From about 0:20 - 1:34 Ser Meryn never blinks he just moves his eyes from Joff to Sansa. It’s a nice detail to his sadistic stone cold complete lack of compassion that he has.
Strangled internally while near nobody except your parents wants to help you, and before you can put the uncle who treated you like the piece of shit you were in his place is pretty harsh. Lol kidding. He should have been eaten by Nymeria, and Ghost, and Summer, and Shaggydog, and a couple of Thenns. And hodor.
It's kinda nice to see Sansa do nothing but "get stronger" in a way because she "does nothing" and only watches the people around her. I hope she puts what she has learned to good use and becomes more cunning as time passes. It is fairly obvious she has matured and endures things better nowadays..
Well look at her now! (Have you seen season 6 episodes?) She's like a boss and so determined to do what she thinks should be done. I'm proud of her. If she keeps going like that, she's gonna be one of my favorite characters :) Or maybe she is because Arya is having a bit boring plot line right now but I believe it will change soon.
Not many people get that. So many saying she progressed on S4... S6. But she was always pretending and her enemies unconciously always thought her how to survive, right, but the luck was never on her side. Hope she embrace all of that and make it something better. Remember what it means to be a Stark. Not something like Cersei 2.0 that some want to tease.
it means that when she has her first period she will then be fertile and he will get her pregnant. At that time Sansa wasn´t a "woman" yet because she wasn´t menstruating.
Bastian Lorraine Oh Ok! XD Interesting! She obviously looks someone who has reached her puberty. It is Joffery whose balls doesn't seem to have dropped. Maybe he should wait for that.
If anyone hasn’t read the books, I’d seriously recommend it. The characters are sooo much more fleshed out. Even extremely minor characters like Septa Mordane have so much depth.
When Jeoffrey try to move towards Sansa, she looks at him fiecely like i ain't afraid of you. Sansa is no fighter but i am pretty sure she thinks she can take down Jeoffrey!
jofferey: "my mother tells me a king should never strike his lady, ser meryn" meryn: "but your grace, shes too old!" ....... meryn: "hmmmm... your grace you smell wonderfull, are you using baby oil?"" *meryn looks at jofferey sensually* *Let's Get It On - Marvin Gaye starts playing* *jofferey gets what he deserves*
