Probably my most favorite fruit ever. And that's saying a lot. When I was a kid, I used to sneak spoonfuls of brown sugar. Sapodilla reminds me of that, only more delicious and juicy.

One of my faves as well. :)

I am from India. One of my favorite fruit, chikoo. Never heard of Mamey sapote. Will definitely like to try those, just to compare.
@hinam9684

It was interesting to see a chikoo being called dangerous. I mean, I just used to eat them however without thinking. And yeah, they're awful when raw. Also, we normally cut that fruit vertically so the knife doesn't catch on the seeds.

I have an updated review with a much better quality Sapodilla here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-g2n7INjfWE4.html Also if you'd like to try Sapodilla yourself, my friends over at Miami fruit have them available here: miamifruit.org/products/sapodilla?aff=24 Use promo Weirdexplorer to get 5% off your order!

This is all very interesting to me. It is great to hear your views on the Sapodilla. I have been eating these since I was a toddler and have never heard or them being dangerous. I think its pretty awesome how different cultures view the same fruit.

There are quite a few named cultivars of sapodilla. Some have grittiness, many do not. The ones I have tasted taste like a pear infused with brown sugar. A Fantastic fruit.
@WeirdExplorer
@WeirdExplorer 10 лет назад
Indeed it is! I've had a few different varieties of them. Truthfully, its very difficult to give an accurate description of any fruit with how many cultivars are out there. I'd love to have the opportunity to compare several at once.

I know that ginkgo "fruit" flesh is considered poisonous with the same toxin as poison ivy/oak, but I ate it anyway since that toxin doesn't seem to bother me, and it dried out my mouth in a weird way, unlike with typical astringency leaving my mouth feeling rubbery. I also processed, without gloves, a bunch for the seeds (which are delicious), then a few days later a layer of skin peeled off my hands. Good times!

Yep, not to be messed with. At least you survived to tell the tale.

I love sapodilla, and very refreshing. There's a lot of them here in Brazil, I even have a sapling in my yard. Never seen one with that hook on the seed tho.

I've just tried it in Cambodia. Very juicy and sweet, with kind of a honey flavour. The variety I tried had a little hook on its two seeds, and the knife I used to cut it was all sticky... Not the best fruit in my world, but always nice to try new stuff!

Tried one of these today. Thought it was soft enough, I was wrong. Throat was immedietly bone dry, thought my throat would close up. I'll give the next one another few days.

My grandma used to be a teacher and she had a student who ate a sapodilla seed by accident, he ended up becoming mute :( she has a huge tree in her yard in Venezuela but she says they are really fibery and acidic, so she just lets the birds eat them. I would love to have a tree of these one day, then again I want a tree for every fruit including Jambu (Rose Apple)!

I haven't eaten these since I was a little kid! I just found some at my local chinese grocery store and they were SUPER tanniny. I put them in freezer, will thaw them and keep them in a paper bag until they ripen. I hope that works as that's what I do for persimmon

Lol @ how "dangerous" this fruit is. Here in Jamaica, it's called naseberry and none of us consider it harmful. I seriously doubt that anyone(even someone eating it for the first time) would attempt to chew or swallow the seeds. It's just generally accepted that if one encounters large-enough, tough seeds in a fruit...it's most likely inedible and should be discarded. Very few seeds can be eaten along with their fruits...eg kiwi fruits and strawberries (most berries actually). But those seeds are usually very tiny and somehow virtually inseperable from the fruit itself. But naseberry seeds are clearly removable and not suitable for eating. I think 'American apple' seeds are more dangerous than naseberry seeds since they're much smaller, so pose greater threat of accidental ingestion. And..they can cause cynide poisoning if chewed and swallowed! Here's a tip for eating naseberries: if you tear it apart with your fingers, starting from one end(instead of cutting through the middle), you'll find that it opens into sections with the seeds clearly visble for easy removal. Btw, the skin is edible ;) So, just wash the fruit carefully and enjoy!

I bought some of these on a trip to the Bahamas. There, they call them dilly and the lady I bought them from just broke one in half and gave it to me to try. That one was a bit under ripe, still green inside, but I think I like it a lot better that way. It almost reminded me of honeydew. I brought one back so it could ripen (unripe when I bought it), and it tasted a lot like brown sugar. I tried a super underripe one though, and it just kills your mouth. Also super hard. The "underripe" one I had was still super soft. I really liked it more.

I live in New York as well and have been looking for a lot of exotic fruit, what markets do you recommend? I frequently go to Chinatown and the Richmond hill area and they have some but not many. I'd reallyl appreciate your help.
@WeirdExplorer
@WeirdExplorer 10 лет назад
Chinatown is the best bet, Mulberry street and canal has a good selection of street vendors; i've seen water apples, eggfruit, fresh durian and other rarities there depending on the season. You can also try forsyth street and canal's vendors and Hong Kong supermarket on Hester st. Outside chinatown, try Garden of Eden on 14th street and Manhattan Fruit Storage at Chelsea Market. They are both expensive gourmet markets, but I've found some interesting stuff For Chikoo specifically, Patel Bros in Jackson Heights has them whenever they are in season. Hope that helps, are you a fruit hunter as well?

I thought chikoo is sapote... Chikoo is the North Indian word and in tamil we call the same fruit as "Sapota". We had a tree back home
@ajaymanoharan5496
@ajaymanoharan5496 6 лет назад
Its not dangerous to eat it raw. Only tastes wierd because of the raw sap taste... similar to the jackfruit sap. And the seeds poisonous? maybe if you grind a handful and swallow them... like apple seeds
@izonker
@izonker 9 лет назад
Just an observation, but they also bear a striking resemblance to persimmons (astringency when unripe, general fruit and seed shape) are they a relative species?
@izonker

Oh, and for the record the song choice alone got this video a "like" Everything after that was just added bonus :)

Nope not related. Though the term "sapote" does apply to the Black Sapote, which is a kind of persimmon.

I still didn't get a chance to try this fruit nor I think I've had any fruits from this variety. However, I've had Egg fruits few years ago and I wonder if Egg fruits are related to this Sapodilla fruit. I'm so glad to know how dangerous this fruit is, sometimes I don't really mind chewing some fruit seeds. Heh..

I'm in Malaysia right now and bought some from a supermarket. First one was very sweet and tasty, the next two were just...not pleasant. Like you describe, dries out your mouth and I couldn't stomach more than the tiniest amount. Came to your channel to see if there's a trick to eating them
@WeirdExplorer
@WeirdExplorer 8 месяцев назад
Look for a big one (compared to the others for sale) that is nice and soft. They soften off the tree too. In Malaysia you can find the round ones like in this video, but also a variety that is more oval shaped with light smooth skin. Enjoy Malaysia

Bought a few at a Hispanic market recently. Had too much of that horrible beet flavor for me to enjoy. The seeds did indeed have rather sharp hooks.

the ones I had at El Salvador were soo good, tasted like caramel cake and were absolutely smooth textured! I don't specifically remember but I don't think the seeds were sharp. There is so much variability between each fruit variety, saying one fruit type is inferior, is like saying all apples are gross after just trying a red delicious.

You are right and i apologise for being rude. It was not my intent to be, however, my initial thought about your video was that "this must be a joke"! In my country we call this fruit naseberry and i have never heard or consider it to be dangerous. So, to hear the reasons you gave as to why it is dangerous was somewhat laughable.

Maaaan, i have eaten them in karachi Pakistan they taste like chocolate why are you scaring the people watching this? i have eaten the ripe chikoos and non ripe ones as well.... yes the non ripe ones taste bitter but just spit it away, you are making it sound like as if it hazardous for human organs.. stop that. Folks, eat these Chikoos i have had 100s of them in Karachi Pakistan, they taste like chocolate caramel , we have had milk shakes in the juice shop too, they are super tasty, any fruit which is not ripe tastes bitter, common sense.

These are really popular near me. One or two children die every year by accidentally swallowing the seeds, usually while playing and eating at the same time. Neighbors kid had to get her throat cut open a few years back because she tripped while eating one. Yeah, can be dangerous.

Prashant Brahma NOT EVERYONE GREW UP WITH THESE
@WINJARA1
@WINJARA1 5 лет назад
@@elmikeomysterio5496 Anyone, especially a small child, can choke and die eating just about anything. That doesn't make any food "dangerous" in and of itself. Children can choke on grapes, cherries, orange seeds...anything. So, parents have the responsibility to remove seeds/cores/pits (and any other parts that might present choking hazards or that are inedible/poisonous) before giving it to children. They should also teach the children how to prepare the item for eating and, as much as possible, supervise them. Adults have to be careful as well, because we can also choke on food, if not careful. Bottom line...the naseberry (sapodilla) is not more dangerous than any other fruit. It's certainly safer for a child than a grape...just remove the seeds.
