I saw Sarah Kay tonight #IBMexico2012. She did a number of poems, this one among them. I was inspired, humbled, awed, and left breathless. She used words to paint pictures in my mind. It was one of the most refreshing experiences I have had in years. Bravo.
i thought about this poem every day for about a month after it aired. and here i am about however long after googling it, and thank god, finding it on youtube. for this, i love the internet. she is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING.
briefly and obviously brilliant, what I like about sarah's poems the creativity, bringing up new subjects not just the standard I love you, I miss you.... blah blah, I am poet myself and I do understand how difficult it is to write something beautiful like this piece, something that won't just capture your ears it will rather reach your soul, and whats really helping sarah is the way she perform, her innocent look, and of course her lovely voice, nicely done.
I am glad that you are having an intellectual conversation about poetry, but I will say the commentor providing and backing up argumenents with evidence is on point. Besides that, I had the pleasure of meeting this wonderful soul at a my college. She inspires and makes you wonder infinite possibilities and that's all that matters: live to discover hidden wonders in the smallest and simplest mediums-the ability to speak with ones' heart
Spoken Word Poetry... It is an intense literary work that expresses ideas with rhythm. Just because YOU didn't write this type of poetry in the 5th Grade, doesn't mean it isn't poetry. Please, do yourself a favour, watch some more of Sarah Kay's poetry. If not that, read the description.
Poems do not have to rhyme. All that matters is quality because I wouldn't call a shit piece of poem that rhymed as real poetry. This performance was beautiful!
i meant what TheLittlemissmayhem wrote sounded like poetry -.- lol i know sarah kays work is poetry!!! i flippin love her to death! i hate when people say it isnt poetry and what Thelittlemissmayeh wrote sounded like poetry to me xD thats wut i was trying to say lo
This is not poetry?! No. Do you know Sarah's work. She is arguably the most talented spoken word artist alive. This IS poetry. I don't mean to get unnecessarily passionate, but if this DOESN'T sounded like poetry to you, I'm afraid you don't know what spoken word really is.
sarhj kay i know this girl from highschool she goes to brown now.. she's soooo freaking talented and so very beautiful .. oh no ... i think i have a girl crush! lol

Poetry - Literary work in which special intensity is given to the expression of feelings and ideas by the use of distinctive style and rhythm. This is definitely poetry, sarah kay is one of the best poets on here. you're confusing rhyming with rhythm. I know they have similar spelling but they mean different things. I don't expect you to understand, but everyone else does. Its alright.
You may not LIKE this type of free verse poetry, but it IS poetry. Poetry is defined as "Literary work in which special intensity is given to the expression of feelings and ideas by the use of distinctive style and rhythm". Calling spoken word "not poetry" is like calling a van "not a vehicle" because you don't think it qualifies. They wrote a TYPE of poetry. Spoken word is another TYPE. That doesn't mean it isn't poetry. How can you call this "not poetry": Example: /watch?v=ipfqKyxm5Hc
Someone whom I trust about serious poetry called this "glib harangue," and I quite agree with it. These are times of counterfeit stuff and Sarah is no different
"Rules to poetry". That's funny. I didn't know poetry had a rule book. There is a definite rhythm to Sarah's poems. If you don't believe me: /watch?v=0snNB1yS3IE Look me in the eye and tell me you don't think that is poetry.
