satella being nice and actually helpful in this scene was such a huge plot twist, i never expected what i assumed the main antagonist showing up just to give subaru words of encouragement and telling him to take more value in his life

I haven’t read the novels, so I’m just speculating here, but it seems to me that by this phrase, Subaru may be making some kind of connection between Satella and Emilia… whether it’s just the resemblance or if Emilia somehow becomes Satella through some time travel shenanigans or something else. It could also be that Subaru is just a super-simp, and he’s willing to save any pretty girl who’s nice to him. It appears that Satella’s kind words this episode have changed Subaru’s attitude toward her.

Roswaal’s idea of a “perfected Subaru” is a person who can only “save one and no others”. Basically, to be a person who uses his life solely for Emilia and deciding what’s best for Emilia even if it tramples all over her will. Someone who’s excessively greedy.

In season one subaru was alone both mentally and physically. He was narcissistic and pushed people away from himself. In season two subaru has people who he cares about that feel the same way but he still FEELS alone. He thinks that the only thing he can give to his friends is his death with zero regard for his own wellbeing. Satella sees this and tells him to take more care of himself. This episode made me realize that we think of satella as the big bad villain, when in reality she like these other witches has desires to achieve something, but the method is like a genie wish where there are consequences, and they are just blind to them. Someone made the suggestion that the season 1 ending “please don’t let me die, waiting for your touch” song is from satella’s perspective to subaru. It doesn’t forgive all his deaths, but so much of his suffering is from him trying to save others, when satella is only concerned about saving him.

subaru needing to value himself more is the theme of this entire story. because he doesnt value himself, he starts to abuse his authority of RBD; he even says, 'lets get information before i die/reset' in one of the loops he just had, imlying that subaru has gotten used to using throwaway lives, which is NOT healthy. this moment is a step in the right direction, but the thing that makes me love re zero is that its not going to happen overnight. I think you completed rezero s2 Nd there is important cut content in this episode. 1) when subaru saw satella, he feel unknown feeling which intensifies subaru to touch and hug satella . 2) echidna mentioned satella was incompatible with envy/ jealous witch factor which created dual personality disorder to satella . Current Stella is kind one and Satella in s2 ep 9/10 is destructive one. But satella personality was the one who consumed half of the world 400 years back. 3) Daphne mentioned subaru as sage candidate ( recheck s1 ep 8 to know what sage means)

Thank you for noticing the mental health points in Re Zero! They’re genuinely so good, and the novels go into it even deeper. One of my fav scenes that was cut here was right after his talk with Roswaal, Subaru runs into Emilia still flustered. He talks a bit with her and cries in her arms a bit, then he tells he wishes he could do something for her. But Emilia tells him she doesn’t want him to do anything more for her. That simply being by her side is enough. This breaks Subaru and is the actual reason hes running thru the forest. Wanting to save Emilia was been his main driving force for a while, and realizing he never needed to and was imposing his “want” to save her when she was more than capable of doing so on her own made Subaru feel like he was already doing what Roswaal expected from him. Such an amazing scene and Im so sad they cut it. They also cut the reveal that Satella has a split personality, although that doesn’t make this any less confusing. Satella is a nice girl, the “witch of envy” personality is the one thats crazy. But back to my point on mental health, Subarus power is one that relies on his ability to sacrifice himself. He HAS TO sacrifice himself to save others, to give his life. So it makes sense he develops a complex where he does not value his own life. Its a surprisingly realistic and human outcome to such a fantastical power. I have seen other anime and manga/manhwa of characters with “looping” powers or the ability to die over and over. None of them ever touch on this (except steins gate) and instead give us a mindless power fantasy. The character writing is so strong for re zero. Even Emilia and Subarus relationship is… surprisingly moving in a realistic and HEALTHY direction. Roswaal wants Subaru to place Emilia above himself, but Subaru should value himself more than anything. Yet hes in a battle with someone who wants the opposite. Such a perfect villain for a naturally developed aspect of his character. Long ass rant done, I love Re Zero a lot and Subarus journey. He is a fantastically written character. The mental health and relationships are mostly done well, save a few. The lesson and meaning depicted in this show is beautiful… its not just about love for others but how love for yourself translates to love for those around you. It taught me such an important lesson

What was the intention of Subaru Natsuki when he decided in his heart to utilize "Return by Death"? It's something that's been depicted ever since the beginning of season two, but the truth of it is spoken here. Subaru made a huge mistake in arc three, and chose to borrow the strength of those around him to overcome the obstacles. The result of that was losing Rem, so the Subaru in arc four cannot think of borrowing the strength of his allies. He would hate to lose someone else like he lost Rem. Re: Zero is basically set up so that the method used to clear the previous arc won't work in the next. With his heart tormented by the plea of the "Witch of Envy", Subaru bites his tongue to flee from this situation. There are witches who agree with what he's done, and witches who disagree, is the setup. After her attack, Minerva's fist is broken by Typhon, and the follow-up attack is prevented by Sekhmet, who was supposed to have been laying on the ground. She can kill other witches while laying on the ground; that's Sekhmet. Arc one's clear method was Reinhard; he's not in arc two. Arc two's clear method was Roswaal, he's not in arc three. Arc three's clear method was Rem, she's not in arc four. I guess it's that sort of feeling. The voices resonating inside Subaru as he's on the brink of death are, as was seen in the first and second trials and in glimpses of in the world up until now, the voices of people that Subaru Natsuki has met up until now. Typhon's Authority has the power to break things based on the target's sense of good and evil, but Daphne's "Hundred-legged Casket" is a mabeast, and since it's like an insect in having no ability to think, it has no concept of good or evil, so it's Typhon's natural enemy. The voices sounding in Subaru's head are the effect of Carmilla's power "Faceless Bride" that shows one what they want to see. Carmilla said that the reason she sided with Subaru was 'Love', but "I got mad after being tricked by Echidna-chan" also played a big part. The reason he's become unable to enter the tomb that he could enter up until the last round is Echidna's reprisal. If he once more felt like contracting with her, most likely, she'd be willing to give him the qualification again. Witches don't understand the human heart. With the qualification lost, Subaru is no longer able to clear the 'Trials' in Emilia's place, Subaru tries to think of a way to save everyone, but Roswaal isn't willing to listen. Rowaal removed his makeup with his hand; that's because he's "lost the will to act.". Did you notice that the tone of his voice changed for a moment? Isn't Koyasu-san incredible? "There is life. Where there is life, there is the future. Where there is the future, there is hope. Where there is hope, there is possibility. ...Where there is possibility, people can be saved." And with that, although I think people with good intuition have already noticed, the truth of Elsa's employer has come to light. Setting aside whether it should be called the weak point of "Return by Death", in a case where two places are being attacked at once, Subaru is fairly powerless. That's the simple problem that causes the stalemate in arc four. Roswaal wants Subaru to become "An inhuman person who doesn't care for anyone except Emilia", doesn't he. Last time, if he'd contracted with Echidna, he'd more or less have become something close to that. Roswaal understands Echdina, so he doesn't despair even if the qualifications have been taken away. As long as Subaru doesn't give up, the way will open up. That's "Return by Death". "You are my hope.". That's Roswaal's groundless true intention. A~h, the performance here, I just love it. Facing off with Roswaal, and having his hope crushed, Subaru doesn't know what to do, and heads for the forest. Time is simply passing by... He worried himself all night, and morning has come. And, when Otto appears, he pulls himself together. That because when he depended on someone, Rem ended up like that. This is the real Otto-cancel, yea~h!!! The second half of the final episode of the first cour!!! Aside from Patrasche!! There were no girls!!!!! And with that, the first cour ends with Otto decking Subaru! Why did Otto deck Subaru? Could he have remembered when Subaru decked him in episode 17!? The answers are all carried over two the second cour in January 2021! There were likely various people wondering about where the first cour would end. I'm sure you wouldn't have thought it was here! At the stage where the episode count was being divided up, I, too, would never have guess that Otto would take up three months! Well then, with the vital role of bearing the unplanned three-month wait left to him, the radio show will welcome Amazaki-san on tomorrow's Re: Zero Radio broadcast! its not well explained in the anime, but envy and satella are functionally two different people in the same body. this is where the first impressions of it are made in the anime. the one in the sanctuary is envy and the one at the tea party is satella. the degree of their "separation" is unknown at this point though

That final scene was something I had been eagerly waiting for since the beginning of s2. One of my favorite scenes and I love and hated how it was the cliffhanger cour 2 ending.

It's explained a bit in detail in the LN, but Carmilla used Faceless Bride to make Subaru understand Satella's love for him, which was the sequence he was having pre-death. It's part of the ability to force people to understand another's feelings. Minerva then felt his desire to not want to die, and healed him with her headbutt.

Few fun revelations this episode. One is that the second trial where he saw that he was possibly abandoning different realities and not just resetting may have been meant to be about realizing that people grieve when he dies. Second, don't forget how Emilia reacts whenever Subaru says she saved him on his first life. It seems to mirror Subaru's response to Satella about him saving her and why she gave him her power. Really helps to convey how absurd those conversations/declarations have to be for Emilia.

This is a turning point.

The same thing happens in this episode, when Satella says that Subaru saved her. Also Satella said she loved him to show that there are people who cares about him.

Even though she looked and sound like Her.. I dismissed the fact that she's Emilia until this episode dropped and the conversation went to like Satella saying "You gave me everything" and Subaru saying "I do not understand you".. Is like going back to when Julius beat up Subaru and Emilia scolded him.. and Subaru saying how she saved him but Emilia saying she doesn't understand and she does not know any of that because those things happened in his past loops... So what I got from this episode was like... If we were all watching Emilia's POV instead and this random guy named Subaru kept on helping and pushing himself for her without us knowing why

I still don't understand why people are so shocked that the jealous witch looks just like Emillia they been saying it since the first episode. Not understanding why it's okay i do no either ( anime watcher) but we know she does that's a reason Emillia is hated by everyone in this country.

a lot of things about satella were cut from the anime for no reason at all, it starts with this meeting in ep 13 and it is revealed that there are two personalities in satella's body, the witch of envy (the bad one) always does things in the worst way possible , she planned to kill rem a few eps ago (out of envy) and also tried to trap the subaru in an infinite loop within her shadows, the satella is the one that appeared in this ep, she is the original satella and she is very good, If you remember in the first season when Subaru tried to tell about RBD she always stopped time, when WoE was in control she squeezed Subaru's heart, when it was Satella she at most only caressed him, it was supposed to have appearances from her in the first season but the director cut everything (note that these appearances are very important for the development of their relationship, in arc 6 Subaru makes several important statements related to Satella that if they were adapted into an anime it would be very strange, precisely because they cut the interactions of the two). Another important thing, Subaru loves Satella even more than Emilia, this black veil that he saw never actually existed, it was something he created in his head so he could avoid seeing her face precisely to try to deny his feelings (something which he couldn't do, in this ep there was supposed to be a monologue from him talking about the feelings he has about her and they cut everything...). Fun fact : Subaru heart always love Satella but his mind keeps denying it. Another fun fact : Satella's veil doesn't exist... Subaru is the only one can see it. He's always in denial that Satella and Emilia literally looks the same.

No matter how many times I watched re:Zero anime (both seasons 1 & 2), this episode is still the most confusing one. I feel it doesn't need all 7 witches to help Subaru realize his life's value and people care about him. Let all these witches appear in one episode raises many questions. But after this one, every episode is so good. Glad I didn't quit after this one.
