Satiety is the best diet you've never heard of.
Dr. Andreas Eenfeldt is a Swedish medical doctor specializing in family medicine. He is the founder and CEO of Diet Doctor, which has been the world’s most popular low-carb website for a decade. In the past few years, Dr. Eenfeldt has moved his company into higher-protein diets and an innovative higher-satiety approach. Recently they launched a new brand and website, Hava.co. They believe that the future of eating for metabolic health and body composition is satiety. At Hava, they aim to make satiety simple.
In this episode we discuss:
- Is it possible to have carbs in a healthy way?
- How you can use technology for better diet choices.
- What’s in the future for advancements in metabolic health?
- Why you should focus on the satiety of foods more than macronutrients.

When he says there's no conspiracy, that's not exactly true. Food scientists also attempt to addict people to unsatisfying food, as part of how they sell more. They don't tell the customer they're doing this. They even claim they're healthy sometimes.

People in Asia do eat more carbs in the form of noodles and rice but these carbs arent unlimited. They also eat lots of fish, beef and vegetables to go with their rice and noodles. They typically don't eat much sugar, sweets or junk food. They have a strong family and community structure, do lots of walking, meditation and even tia chi or martial arts. But those same Asians who come here, to the US, away from family, eat our processed foods, GMO grains, sweets, drive more, walk less and stop meditation, gain weight and develop diabetes.

All bodies do not process food the same. Metabolism is pretty complex, therefore there is no one diet that fits all. The one uniform reality is that all ultra-processed, high carb foods are not healthy. Body weight is not the only marker for good health. Start with a healthy baseline and adjust amount of protein, healthy fats, and healthy carbs as needed over time.

Congratulations Dr Lyon, you're amongst the rare diet thought leaders and authors to ask the alcohol question. Too many authors and speakers totally ignore it as if it does not exist. It is how a high % of adults self-medicate at the end of the day. The whole satiety area is fascinating as it is so nuanced. People could categorise foods as "appetite-stimulating" versus "appetite-calming". Comparing 3 low satiety foods (cream, butter and macadamias), the macadamias would be appetite-simulating (for many people) and so those people are better off no having them in their food environments (home, work & travel). It's a pity you did not get into the benefit of strength training during weight loss and beyond, but save that for interview 2. Another question is the role of a coach for guidance and accountability. We have a program where people are coached weekly for 15 minutes for at least 12 months. Habit change takes a lot longer than most believe.

I had heard of HAVA before this. It’s a really fascinating interview. I think what he says about lack of satiety in nuts and some dairy- and some of our inability to get enough of these… wow… this made so much sense. I was vegan most of my life and craved protein for decades. I would eat so many nuts!! Then when I added animal products almost 3 years ago (first eggs from my own hens and 1.5 later fish… and finally a meat/fat diet to treat cancer… Paleomedicina’s PKD diet)… well I started to experience actual satiety!! I broke my veganism with salmon and I felt better than I’ve ever felt. Salmon still makes me feel that way. Eggs and ruminant meat also feel really good. So there is a point to my comment… just that I started with high veggie Keto, then switched to PKD meat & fat diet. I felt exhausted (probably a lot of stress contributed) during this 8+ months of meat/fat PKD diet. I want to stay in therapeutic ketosis as much as possible to prevent cancer from returning. But I want to also just feel better and stronger. I have a very active job. I feel like my muscles and energy can’t keep up. I’ve seen many of your videos recently and other RU-vidrs talking about starting with 1 gram of protein per pound ideal body weight. I’m on my 4th day of this and it really is incredibly satiating!! I also thinks it’s fascinating and hopeful to think that I could potentially play with my macros and add some carbs down the line. It might be a few years as I want to keep cancer away. But it’s something to look forward to🙏🏽 I wonder why do you say that less active people need MORE protein? (That’s counter intuitive !). And last question… two meals a day works best in my schedule. Is there anything wrong with 100g protein at one meal? I’m shooting for 150 and usually get 50-60 for breakfast and 90-100 for dinner. Thanks 🙏🏽

@felipearbustopotd 7 месяцев назад
I do 2MAD, but I ensure that I eat a bigger % of protein in my 1st meal than I do in my second, basically 60 / 40 as a percentage. According to Dr Donald Layman, Dr Gabrielle Lyon mentor the 1st protein intake is key as that is the longest time you'd be in a catabolic state and the body will be that much more receptive for protein. Caveats apply.

@@Sarah, I’d check out Stephanie Person. She has been doing a high fat keto diet for 16 years and has worked with thousands of clients, and she values what she has _seen_ in her clients over studies, because sadly, not all studies are accurate, and many are based on profit. :( She says women should get 75 grams of protein daily or less (no more than 20-25 per meal or it may spike your blood sugar), and at least 200 grams daily of fat. She achieves this by adding lots of butter to her 3-4 meals. Not only is high fat great for fighting cancer, but it’s also very healing for the body-especially for the adrenals, thyroid and balancing hormones. Best to you in figuring out your journey. ❤

While i myself am a proponent of low carb diets, and find that i can stay satiated easier than on a high carb low fat diet, that isn't what he said at all, and the fact all you have to look at the majority of bodybuilders of the 80's and 90's who were low-fat proponents and ripped, plus you say your protein and fat needs, the reality is a person has an essential fatty acid need, which is quite low, and a person could easily eat high protein and carb and low fat and meet those needs. Just because you personally don't like or want to follow that diet doesn't make it true. Also, there are several groups that are hunter-gatherers still that are very high carb low fat, but again they aren't vegan.of course and they are incredibly healthy. But again they are real food

When people talk about grams or percentages of carbohydrates, they almost never specify "net" or "total" carbohydrates. This matters because fiber matters, in terms of energy one can utilize (and of course, not all fiber has the same effect.)
@missygee6155
@missygee6155 11 месяцев назад
Net carbs were designed by marketing teams for packaged food makers to sell so-called "health" or "keto" foods. Counting net carbs instead of total carbs is just your way of allowing your body to eat more total carbs without the guilt. But in the end, you're still eating X amount of total carbs, which is all your body recognizes. Throwing fiber on poison or sugar doesn't negate the negative effects of the poison (sugar). Just like popping prylosec before pizza, junk food, or wheat products doesn't stop the destruction in the gut, but only masks the symptoms for a while.

This was not only not as enjoyable as other interviews you do, but the thumbnail message of the video is still very confusing. Even after watching the whole thing. Why are whole foods unhelpful? This is not only inconsistent with the video (like when the doctor says that spinach, which is a whole food, is high on the satiety scale) but it’s just not factual to make the bogus claim. This video is inconsistent and confusing is many ways.

I think he's saying most important thing is to eat whole foods and it's ok to bring flexible in eating carbs but also include protein fiber and fat for satiety and keep the processed junk away. I just wouldn't eat nuts cause of omega 6. I'm okay with low oxalate grains, vegetable, fruits, seeds and beans personally. I wish I could tolerate higher total carbs and oxalate foods but need to fix my gut first.

The problem with too many nuts is the type of fats. Omega 6 fatty acids need to be balanced with omega 3 fatty acids. In moderation, they are a good food for a low carb diet.

Ya for me I have problems with oxalates which is a gut health problem. I'd be eating tons of a variety of beans and tofu, tiny bit of seed fats, lots of fiber, and fruit and local grown honey, if I wasn't sensitive to oxalates. With oxalates, I can only eat chickpeas, mung beans which I can't find, butter beans, cow peas. I'd prefer being vegan just because I want to be kinder to animals but harder to get in all the protein only because there's only those few beans/peas I can tolerate. The fake meats are junk food. But I also struggle to eat enough beans for protein maybe because of the protein on top of the fiber. Beans must be very high on the satiety list. I need to fix my gut. It's so bad. I think I may give up being vegan just to try to squeeze in more protein until I can heal my gut

Please tell me how low a low carb high fat diet is healthy when I'm a whole food plant based vegan with excellent labs. I have found no consistent studies that proves your contentions. It sounds too rigid and assumes all people will respond well in the long hall . I do agree that in the short run it works but I question the diet long term. There is plenty of protein in a vegan diet. Vegan fats such as avocado and nuts provide all I need. I do stay away from processed foods, salt, processed fats and sugar.
@hunterscollectors673

There's not enough complete protein in plants, hence the reason why vegans have such a low muscle mass. Just look at the vegan doctors such as Greger and mc Dougal. They suffer from sacropenia and look like skeletons. No modern human being in the history of planet earth has ever been vegan. Veganism is a religious cult.

I admit to being a little disappointed in doctor Eenfelt because low-carb living is the only way for some people to lose weight. I don't care if he thinks you can be thin on a low-carb diet it won't work for me, and it won't work for millions of us, but one thing that always works is a low carb diet.To see him "moderate" his stance on low-carb eating seems a bit odd as though he's throwing in the towel by not agreeing with his own basic premise when originally he was spot-on and it was true. Nothing works for most people like a ketogenic diet. Many poeple under eat protein as Gabrielle knows well. So yes you can lose weight on a high carb diet, but if you prioritize for protein intake, and get the nessary fat that we need, there is NO WAY that cam happen on a " High Carb diet". To my mind he was more "science based" before his current incarnation.
@cyclamen831
@cyclamen831 11 месяцев назад
I am not disappointment, he is just rethinking the premises of low carb diets based on new evidence, just like any reasonable doctor or scientist would. If you look at the study he mentioned =DIETFITS study by Dr C. Gardner on JAMA- the protein intake was essentially the same ( 21% vs 23%) in the two randomized groups.The study simply demonstrated that both approach worked over 12 months. As a scientist/ doctor it would be foolish not to take note of it. Ultimately on an individual basis, there will be some people doing better with one approach vs the other.
@jamesatkinson5805
@jamesatkinson5805 11 месяцев назад
You keep making absolute statements where you state " NO WAY" that can happen on a high carb diet, but there are countless examples for decades of people following high carb diets and succeeding! I mentioned before that i actually prefer a low carb diet myself, but you are the one denying " science". People turn all of this into a religion when you turn this into a religion or an identity instead of a tool in a toolbox, and adapt what is useful oftentimes people aren't going to have the health benefits that they could accomplish

Be careful in getting to lean in your 40’s. despite what these so called experts say, getting to lean is not good for you and only puts extra added-stress on your body which also makes you look much older. For optimal health or males 15-17% body fat and females 20-30%. As we get older the body stores more fat for a reason, this is for survival. Don’t full yourselfs in believing it’s healthy being to lean. End of the day, do what you like
