The 2506 in my opinion is the best deer rifle on the planet. My longest kill shot was with a Weatherby 2506 with a 100 grain Remington core lock. 644 yards the deer was dead before the bang was over. My dad kills elk with the 87 grain bonded bullets. He blew the heart out of a cow elk at 350 yards with that 87 grain. All in all its a great rifle.
I think the 111FCNS has a lighter, shorter (22") barrel as compared to the 111LRH which sports a 26" barrel, however, 2" of that is muzzle brake. There is a weight difference as well with the LRH being about 1.5 pounds heavier. Which is better would depend on the country your hunting and your style of hunting. The 7mag would be a better caliber if game is larger than muledeer or range exceeds much more than 500 yards.
How would you compare Savage 111 Long Range Hunter to Savage 111 FCNS? How thick is the barrel for Savage 111 Long Range Hunter? Would you think it is better to chamber this in 7 mm Rem Mag?
I just received my LRH in 7mm 2 weeks ago and it is incredible!!! One thing I'd like to mention is about the accustock being free floated except at the end it is touching the barrel. Many people write in to forums and complain about it. I believe it is for barrel harmonics and acting as a node for the play in the muzzle brake. I am shooting half MOA with my handloads after break in and 40 rounds of copper/powder fouling built up. Kevin
Great shooting! Thanks for the hard work and info. Savage has done a great job with accuracy. The 25'06 is a great round. My Mom has used a 250 Savage all here life she just took a deer with it she is 82 years old and took a Elk at age 79. The 25 caliber is fast and will do the job.
Thanks Ryan and yes, Savage has come a long ways. I actually have 2 different rifles chambered in 250 savage, a sav. 111 and a ruger #1. Great little round. Thanks again for the nice comments. Alan, Shedhorn Sports
Monsterman, it depends on the game hunted. From deer on down it would be hard to find a better long range caliber. However, up close the 25-06 is very destructive and can ruin lots of meat. I've taken 2 elk with the 25-06 and it did a great job but there are certainly better calibers for that purpose as well. For all around use including elk, I'd go with a 7mag or one of the 300 mags. If recoil is an issue I'd opt for a 270 with a premium bullet.
ShedhornSports Ive shot a 30-06 ,recoil is there but is manageable. Ive shot 375 H&H a few times but nothing to me seems harder recoiling than a 12gauge 3-1/2 mag loads for turkey. Im sure the 10 gauge would thump the shoulder too. Ive thought about getting a 270, and a 243. The 6.5 creedmoor has got my attention too.
Gotta tell you that I bought one of these after seeing reviews like this. Mine will not group less than 1..75 inches with any ammo I have tried in it. Sent it to Savage anf they say it's all good. They only guarantee 1.5 inches at 100 and were lucky enough to have got that when they shot it. Worst performing piece of junk I own and near the top of the price range. Buyer beware!
David, sorry for your trouble, I have heard of others with similar problems. If I were to guess at a solution, I would say the thing to try is bullet seat depth but you or someone you know would have to reload to try this. The easy answer is to trade off the gun if you feel comfortable doing this. There's a rather long list of things to try as well, its just dependent on how much time, money and effort you are willing to expend. Good luck.
I will most likely try to load something for it in the future but expected better from Savage. Their customer service and overall quality seems to be slipping from what I have heard recently. Even if I get this to shoot well it will be my last dealing with them. Thanks for your response.
