Nice upgrade. Thanks for covering this Taryl. You’ll be a plumber soon! A recommended upgrade, get a quick disconnect for your gas cylinder for quick changes. Remember, propane and natural gas is less energy dense so your generator won’t be able to reach maximum output.

You lose around 10% of maximum power on propane and another 10% on natural gas, roughly, assuming your motor is matched to the gen head. If the motor is oversized then you might not lose as much or any. For example, you need around 10 hp for a 5kw gen but on NG your 10 hp motor is now an 8 hp motor so now you have a 4kw gen. If your 5kw gen comes with an oversized 12 hp motor (most don't) then you wouldn't lose anything.

pipe sealant needs to be spread around the entire fitting before screwing them together. It’s really used as a lubricant more so than a sealant. pipe threads are tapered they’re gonna get tight eventually. Pipe sealant is more like extra insurance. notice that the sealant that’s already on the fitting goes around the entire threaded surface Notice Taryl dud put sealant all the way around that last fitting quite liberalll

@brnmcc01 Год назад
@@dandearman2871 Yup 10% less on NG versus LP.
@brnmcc01
@brnmcc01 Год назад
It depends on the engine. Newer overhead valve engines have higher compression ratios than the old school flathead engines and don't lose as much power on LP versus gas. However it is 5-8% less, and that's mostly because in order to run the most efficiently on LP gas, the compression ratio needs to be slightly higher, as well as more spark advance. LP gas has an equivalent octane rating of about 110, so it burns slower, and needs more time to get the fire going, so that's the reason for more degrees of advance. You need to fire that spark plug well in advance of the piston reaching TDC, or the main reason you're losing power is you're sending unburned propane right out the exhaust, it didn't have enough time to complete combustion. It's also more resistant to detonation, so you can increase the compression ratio. There is a point of rapidly diminishing returns however, because without some sort of forced induction like a turbocharger, increasing the compression ratio increases the pumping losses of the engine, plus increases the stress on the internals. Very high compression engines come with very heavy pistons and rods etc like a diesel engine, so with a small engine like this you can't go crazy with the compression ratio or you might pop the cheap head gasket or stretch the head bolts, these small engines aren't built like a nascar engine... lol

It's better if you have one of those cheap kilowatt plug in meters. They tell you the voltage and the frequency of loads that you plug into them. You want to adjust the speed of a generator so that you're getting around 60 cycles (hz). The RPM of the engine determines the frequency and also the voltage. You can do it by ear but a meter is better.

Where I live propane refills are around $4/gal at U-Haul ($17 for a #20 tank) and propane has around 80% of the energy so it works out to around $5/gallon gasoline equivalent. Could be more (if you do the tank swap thing at the grocery store where they only give you 15 lbs.) or less in some parts of the country - some guy in TX told me that he pays $12 for a fill. $5/gal sounds high but if you are using this for emergency backup and only going thru a tank or two, paying a couple of bucks extra is nothing compared with having the gen start and not having to deal with dirty carburetors.

I asked the salesman at Century that question when I bought my kit. So how long your unit runs on a gallon of gas would be abought the same for a gallon of propane. A 20# LP tank is not quite 5 gallons. So you can do the math if you know that gasoline/ hr rate for your unit.

One word of caution. If someone is converting a Honda generator or other power equipment, and it has electric start, a different flywheel may be required as the timing is different for LP or CNG. We had two new pressure washers that we had converted to propane, and the mechanic couldn't get it to run properly. He's done lots of small engine repairs, but this was a first for him. After purchasing new flywheels, the engines actually ran well, and have been doing well since. This mostly applies to Honda engines less than 10 years old, and possibly engines that have had an electric start kit installed. The difference between the two is the location of the keyway on the flywheel. We thought about getting new keyways broached in, but opted for new flywheels. Our pressure washers did not have two regulators in the kit, but all of our pressure washers use forklift LP tanks and high pressure hose assemblies to the regulator.

@throwbo

Electric start has nothing to do with the timing. On gens, it doesn't seem like propane changes the timing enough for you to need to change the flywheel. You can get offset woodruff keys so you don't have to actually change the whole flywheel to advance the spark. Some ppl say you should reduce the spark gap by about 25%, so if you are running 0.030 then down to 0.023.

Wow, this brings back old memories. Back in the 60's When I worked for the City of Tampa repairing parking meters, we had one similar to the the one you showed here. We used it to reset parking meter posts that had been bent or broke off. The attachments we had were an electric pavement breaker, and a rotating rock drill. We would throw the propane powered generator in the back of our Cushman Truckster along with a small mixing tub, hoe, shovel, some Sack Crete, water and we were in business. The unit worked flawlessly for years with only routine maintenance. No propane issues. We had a safety device ( 3" pipe coupling with 2 pieces of angle iron, one welded on each side of the coupling. You would place one foot on each side of the coupling on the angle iron and insert the rock drill into the coupling before pulling the trigger) for the rock drill to keep you from pounding your foot instead of the payment. Ha Ha BTY my buddy found out the hard way. OUCH! Thanks again for the memories.😊

If it's electric start, yes, but the alternator may not make enough electricity to power them to a useful brightness. Also, you'd probably be sacrificing charging the battery in the process. The alternator might be swapped-out with a higher-output unit, but more engine power used to make electricity is less available to spin the blade. If it's pull start only, you'd need to add an alternator, which is a stator, new flywheel and probably some sort of regulator/rectifier (which may or may not be included with the stator). The flywheel should be a straight swap, but there's a good chance the engine will need modification to mount the stator. A rectifier should just tuck under the flywheel while a regulator is easily mounted just about anywhere. Finally, incandescent lights are pretty agnostic and forgiving about the electricity you feed them, so long as the voltage is relatively close to rated. However, they use 7-10x the power as LEDs for the same light output. LED's on the other hand, depending on the support circuitry running them, may require DC only at a pretty consistent and stable voltage. I wouldn't run LEDs with just a rectifier unless the support circuitry was specifically designed to handle the output. Of course, there's always just slapping some battery-powered/rechargeable lights on it.

But when it come to flammable gas plumbing and the application of pipe thread sealant I would NOT trust you to plumbing an outhouse which has NO flammable gas supplied from external sources. Apply the sealant evenly all the way around ON ALL THREADS skipping the the first 1-3 threads as you mentioned to prevent introduction of tape or paste style sealant into the gas system. If those threads on the pipe do not leak it will be a miracle and probably just a matter of time before vibration and weather changes do not cause them to leak a little to a lot. You hillbilly from Podunk Iowa, I think. I’m a hillbilly from Mississippi and the main reason I know about pipe fitting is my dad, a graduate of the 3rd grade and a man with an insatiable desire for knowledge taught me and doing all my on maintenance on several homes with gas heat and 29.5 years in the commercial nuclear power industry where you find out that tubing fitting that will not leak under pressure may leak under a vacuum. @@throwbo what planet are you from, after you shut valve there's still propane in the lines which allows it to keep running until all the propane is used up.
@throwbo
@throwbo Год назад
@@Mazel_Tov_888 Have you actually tried this? Even if there is propane in the line once you close the valve it loses pressure and can no longer come out. If you actually had a propane generator you would see that it dies almost instantly. Even if you don't have a gen, try this on your gas grill (if you have one of those) and let me know how long the flame burns after you shut the tank valve.
@Mazel_Tov_888
@Mazel_Tov_888 Год назад
@@throwbo Yes, I've done it with my dual fuel gen. That's why I'm saying what I'm saying. When you close the valve, the line is still pressurized and still has propane in it. Same as when you shut the petcock, the line is still pressurized and fuel is still in the line. It runs until the fuel is burnt up.

@@Mazel_Tov_888 A carb has a bowl with liquid fuel and one carb bowl full of liquid gasoline equals a bunch of gas vapor. Gases are very light so one lineful of propane is not nearly as much. My results may be skewed because I have one of those Chinese dual fuel carbs where the demand regulator is the size of the palm of your hand. Maybe a bigger full sized Garretson holds more gas. The regulator has a diaphragm and will act like a bellows and store a little bit of gas under pressure. It's not unlike the vacuum reservoir on your power brakes which stores enough vacuum for you to pump the brakes a couple of times.
@TheGoodVibrations
@TheGoodVibrations Год назад
I am thinking that unless one of the valves (the one the propane tank - or the one at the second regulator) needs to be off even when the engine is only shut OFF for a short time because I bet the propane will seep past valves and rings when not running.

When not in use, yes you do want to turn off the gas at the tank (fuel source). However, these systems are touted to be "on-demand" setups - the gas will not flow unless engine vacuum is drawing it in, hence the reason for the purge/primer button to initiate flow of gas into the engine intake to get the motor started.

My in-laws live 'Up North' as we call it. They have a small generator skid, but if it doesn't get started regularly, which it hasn't, the gas and anything that touches gas goes bad...I seriously could have used this video about a year ago. They junked the generator, and purchased a new one that can run on propane, and had a line installed off the propane line that already goes into the house. Could have saved a ton of money with this video and the help of me, their no-good son-in-law, heh.

The only issue I've seen with a propane powered generators is in freezing temperatures, the regulator at the tank iced up and the generator shut down . The fix was to set the propane tank 5 feet away from the exhaust to keep the tank and regulator warm.

Was it a small tank? normally they only freeze if you are over drawing the tank not because of temperature. When it’s cold out the small tank will not produce gas as fast as the equipment is using it.

The one thing about propane is that when the generator is running for almost an hour the tank will start to freeze up, to fix that u just put it in a little container of water, & or have it in the sun on a hot day if u live down south.
@brnmcc01
@brnmcc01 Год назад
Or what my dad does is he has a little gated area to keep it out of the wind, and just point the exhaust and hot air from the generator at the tank. Not right up against it obviously but like a foot or so away, then that hot air keeps the tank warm enough to compensate for the chilling effect of vapor withdrawal

I converted my mower duty tractor to propane. It's as convenient as fuel injection but it did cost alot as the 18hp engine would freeze vapor draw tanks and requires liquid draw forklift tank and extra vaporizer with 2nd stage regulator. I'm saving $0.40 per gallon equivalent gasoline and service cost is down as well so it'll pay for it self in about 4-5 years. The oil delusion and contamination is a fraction compared to gasoline. It is a dry fuel so there will be some more valve seat ware but ohv service isn't too difficult. So far I have 700 hours on my model 35 Vanguard last 180 hours on propane no issues yet. I did overhaul the engine at 500 hours but never had the block apart. The shaft seals, valve covers and dipstick seals were leaking because the engine is over 20 years old. Tractor is a bit of a mix mash of craftsman gts between 1986 gt18 and 1992 gt6000 with all the extra options aside from the bigger headlight but still have the metal grill of course.😉

Natural gas has about 1/2 the BTU rating of propane, thus half the power per measured volume. The metering orifice will need to be opened more if running on natural gas. Less with propane.

As long as you have a Regulator on your Propane Hose (say from an old Gas Grill). You can put a PVC Elbow fitting in the back of the Air Filter housing. Then hook up the Propane to the fitting. Works exactly the same, just cheaper. No need to buy the elaborate "Conversion Kit". (Another Pro Tip)
