The other day walking down my street I heard a pleasant jingling of bells - rounded the corner and saw it was the pvc window guy holding a bunch of sash weights he'd just ripped out of an 1880s house near us which did - until then - have 100% original windows. Wasn't such a pleasant sound after all.

Always loved the wavy glass and imagined how many generations have looked through it.

Young people, like Andrew and the plasterer's daughter (Linda?), are the future of these historic preservation trades! We need the knowledge of older master craftsmen passed down before it is lost forever!

He knows how hot and humid it gets down here, and he's still willing to come down and live in Louise, during the HOTTEST months of the year and restore those windows? He is either getting paid A LOT or he is really, REALLY passionate about people keeping historic windows. Or both! Great info! I just hate seeing beautiful, historic homes with new vinyl windows. They have zero personality with their 1 over 1 lights.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you for saving those old windows. This is my all time favorite episode. The windows are one of the biggest character highlights in an old house. I remember being about 10 years old and being so intrigued with the old windows in our house with the latch and the side weights. I actually got to tour the little old house my father once lived in when he was 5. When he lived in it there was no electricity. There was plumbing but that was added before he moved in. It had it's own well and a pump house.

The main thing I love about old windows is the wavy glass. I find it so sad to see these beautiful old windows with broken panes that have to be replaced with new “flat” glass but I know there is no choice in the matter. Are there any salvage companies that have the old glass or windows for sell?

What sash windows I have left in my house. It’s cold as hell in the winter. It’s like having an open window. I think I need to get storm windows, and copper weather stripping.

was told to restore our old windows (not replace, but new glass if needed, sash, hardware) would be up to $1000 a window. Wow. We stand broken cords right now.

That's rough. I will say that new wood windows are also that expensive. If you only have broken cords, I think you could get a much better price. What state are you in?

@@OurRestorationNation Michigan. I think it included frame, sash/weight/pulley and glass- which the only one I know is completely in need of work is the corner round window- the frame is all rotted out and looks to be the worst in the house. probably because no one wanted to touch it. We are fixing the house as we go. Foundation was first!

New fake phony vinyl windows ruin the looks of homes in which they are installed. There is nothing more important to the architecture of any home than the windows. It amazes me to see people build or restore a fantastic house and then they ruin it by putting cheap vinyl windows. It destroy the beauty and takes away from the authenticity of the home. Please save your beautiful wood windows. If you install tight storm windows they will last for years and with the storm windows (which I always paint to match the trim) they become double pane windows.
