Well, my great uncle used to have some land up tween Beaumont and Dallas, bout an hour either way, and situated right in the Piney Forest. He's running traps(doing errands, checking fenceline, etc, catch all term for being busy) one day and doesn't show for dinner. Taking care of feral hogs, piney wood rooters, we call them, is an essential task to ensuring the conservation of the land and the health of the other wildlife and livestock in the area, because the holes they dig rooting for food kill many wandering animals through broken legs and ankles. There were some shots fired around mid day, nothing strange, that's one of the things he was out there to do, and maybe he's staying late to catch them when they're more active. Still isn't back at daylight, so they start looking. They found what was left of him in a copse of pines, looked like his boot got stuck and twisted his ankle and likely got gored in the femoral artery by a big boar, and bled out before they started eating him. Don't believe the BS you might hear about hogs only going after people if they're already dead, they're viscous, lethal, terroritorial beasts in their element. He took two out, they found 2 of them peppered with shot from his 10ga. I never got to meet the man, but I was passed this story, so there you go.

Oh, I just remembered, his ankle was twisted where his boot sole was stuck in one of the aforementioned holes they left. So they think he might have fallen before getting gored.

Wow! High praise, indeed! That's also one of my stories that I have a particular connection to. There's actually a story in the works right now that's directly related to this one.
