This scene is honestly brilliant in my opinion. He’s making a selfless choice to preserve a happy family, and its echoing Clark’s own life. He realizes Richard will be a great father, even if he’s raising a son that isn’t his. Clark has become Jor-El and Richard became the Jonathan Kent to Jason’s Clark. It’s honestly brilliant

"Where the great hero abandons his own son." I guess you missed the part of this scene where he tells the kid "you'll never be alone" and tells Lois "I'm always around." I guess your definition of abandonment is quite different than Webster's lol.

people here is my take on this: superman just learned he has a son and like the honorable and humble man he was raised to be by the Kents he understands that Jason has a family and knows they'll raise him like he was and when Jason's powers start to fully manifest he will be there to teach him to control them.

I think this scene is unfairly disliked. Superman did not abandon his son; he saw Lois is happy with her new family. He said he will always be around. He is humble and doesn't want to intrude on that simply because they had a kid together. He needs to win her back the "right" way. I'm sure all this would have been addressed in the sequel if not for all the unreasonable hate that killed it.

This movie doesn’t get enough credit. At the time, people wanted what MOS gave us but instead we received a film that dealt more with Superman’s personal relationships than fighting long time villains. Not every Superman film needs to be complete action to be good.

Jason has an earth father who is a great dad and he needs that. When he is ready Kal-EL will be there.

"Abandoned?" What was he supposed to do? Impose himself in the boy's life without invitation and mess up an existing family dynamic as if only his feelings count? What a ridiculous, inaccurate, clickbait title for a sweet scene.

What we see here is Superman putting the needs of his son above his own. He doesn't take the boy's family away from him by getting together with Lois or telling him that Richard isn't his dad (presumably the kid knows he's not normal but he doesn't seem to think his Richard isn't his real dad). He knows that the kid will be brought up well by L & R and will presumably be there to offer him guidance when it comes to his powers despite ultimately probably ending up alone, without Lois.

Well this Lois died to Jokers' antics YEARS later, as Clarks' wife. So by proxy, marrying Lois: Clark did NOT abandon his son. *CWs Crisis on Infinite Earths 2019*

Very underrated movie, trying to fill Christopher Reeve's shoes is beyond an impossibility because Reeve will be the best Superman of any lifetime...but as a standalone film it's pretty good..you have to watch it twice to really appreciate it..I did the second time around

I totally disagree with this assessment of Superman as a deadbeat dad... He wouldnt be around his son because until he grew into his strength, it would be dangerous for any enemy to know that Superman had a son. As far as Lois being case as a whore, well I mean I dont agree with the whole having a kid out of wedlock, but it happens all of the time either way.

I thought Bryan Singer did a great job on the movie. They also inproved the soundtrack, the Superman theme, when Lois flew w/Superman to prove how much the world needed a Savior. Thought that was beautifully done for the soundtrack.

Superman loves his son...so much so that he realizes the best and safest place for Jason is with Lois and Richard for the time being. And since the fact that Jason has super powers is still a secret to everyone, save Lois and Superman, Jason will be able to have a normal life sans the pressure that would come with being a superhero, as well as the threat of danger from any enemies of Superman. This is not a perfect analogy, but I think of it as a temporary adoption. And when a child is adopted, the parents of said child rarely stay in contact with the adopters...let alone the adoptee. Thus, it's not abandonment. It's love.

Did CW crisis mention Jason in passing? He should be almost grown by now, maybe with Richard and Clark dividing jobs... Richard raised him as a normal child while Clark taught him how to use his powers wisely with trips to the fortress of solitude. That would have been nice to see.

Superman is in a world where he does not belong, he is an alien, an outcast and always will be. His son has a chance to live a life that superman could never truly live. Not to mention the protection he is giving his son and Lois Lane by leaving them behind.

Though Superman would be a better option to help Lois raise Jason, and teach/train him how to use his powers, Richard is all the boy knows and Clark doesn't wanna complicate things. He was gone for 6 years. Lois gave up hope and thought he was dead so she moved on. Its like staying loyal to a deadbeat father who is serving 7 years in prison... You aint gonna see him for a while so you might as well end things or cheat on him while he's locked up. She got lonely and didn't think she'd ever see him again. The title of this vid is funny but not entirely true. Superman knows that he doesn't have time to raise a kid anyway since his hands are always tied saving the world and everything so he leaves Lois and her boyfriend Richard alone to provide for the boy. Its putting his needs before his wants. As bad as he wants to hop into Richard and Lois' relationship and get his woman back, he can't because Richard just so happens to treat Lois right and if he makes her and his son happy then thats all that matters.

Your synopsis says that you didn't actually pay attention when you watched this movie. You just wanted to hate it. The flawed flavor text you left on this video makes that clear. Superman was gone from Earth for FIVE YEARS. He didn't know Lois was pregnant when he left. Not knowing he's got a kid because he's not even in the same galaxy is not the same as a 'deadbeat dad.' If a guy doesn't know he's got a kid, he doesn't know he needs to be a dad. Now, I reiterate that he was gone for FIVE YEARS. Two men in five years does not make her a whore. She was in a stable relationship and didn't go running back to Superman the moment he showed back up in public. Lois stayed loyal to her new-found love. Next time, pay attention to the damn movie. Not doing so is just a waste of time.

This movie was perfect and the romance was chivalrous poetic justice What he does here is beautiful. He chose to give his soon the same life he had... he didnt have to. But in hind sight as aman. A true good man of justice.. protecting those whom may not protect them selves and a man so selfless he didnt shake up the whole world of a person who had to let go and start over. He the definition of the perfect movie magic man. And nailed the comics to a period. Lexus Luthor was brilliant. Except for the not being rich and prison and the old lady haggling for billions.

Batman Begins and Superman Returns should’ve started the DC Cinematic Universe. Warner Brothers made a mistake not combining the two worlds together. Both movies were one year apart from each other. Both movies were fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with fans and critics. Both movies looked and felt like they could’ve been in the same universe. Both movies brought the two most popular superheroes back on the big screen after a long hiatus. Superman Returns referenced Gotham City. Not to mention, it grossed more money at the box office than Batman Begins whose sequels went on to hit the one billion dollar mark. I Am Legend teased a crossover between them for May 2010. The billboard in Times Square had Bale’s Batman logo and Routh’s Superman logo merged together.

Singerman Repugnant was released 28 June 2006. Becuase I work so much in Summer I neever saw it in the theaters. The DVD was released in December 2006 but I never saw it until March 2007. Finnally learning how to extract videos from DVD I did so and posted that clip in Novemeber 2007. If you look at the dates on the comments you'll notice that this video went unnnoticed even by me for over two years. WEll ... until you came along.

Believe it or not that was done in mass before the while the movie was in early production. And has continued since. It reminds me of that old axiom "Don't tug on Superman's cape."

When Lois pulls back from kissing Superman atop the Daily Planet, she makes a principled stand against returning to things as they were before Superman left: namely, that "Richard's a good man...and you've been gone a long time." It is here, that we see Superman's most iconic virtue: veneration of his bond with Lois in accepting his rejection from the only person who ever completed him.

@deelow83 I think you might be right. I loved the film. I think Brandon Routh did a superb job. I think he captured the spirit of Chris Reeves, and at the end, what a tribute to Chris and George Reeves in the final flight scene.

In the comic books when that happened people did complain about it and that was changed like 40 years ago. But to answer you question more specifically, that was not in this movie.

I've made it crystal clear in this dialogue between you and I that it is the direction Bryan Singer chose for this movie that I have contempt for and his work I have criticized.

@youangeltube I think the general plot twist of Superman leaving for 5 years to take a look at the wreakage of Krypton was the biggest plot problem to be had. Everything else was secondary. Either way, I think the producers were tired of still building on the original storyline with Christopher Reeve, which is what this film did. Not to say that Singer didn't evidently get into some facts, such as Superman sleeping with Lois in Superman II impregnated her, but yeah, the storyline was overused

Don't you think it would have more to do with thinking of others? First, he chooses not to break up the relationships around Lois and his son that already exist. Second, he chooses not to reveal to anyone that he has a son, or his enemies will try to hurt the boy. Third, he establishes that he loves his son and will always be around to protect him, but does it in such a way that the boy will not be hurt (he'll be happier and safer not knowing). Sounds pretty selfless to me.

As for the rest of your enlightening, the problem with it is there is no reason to put a costume on or give the characters names because that is the real life story of every selfish man and woman seeking to satiate there own desires while seeking some redemption in defining it as a modern era relationship. I.E. That's not Superman and Lois Lane.
