I bought (another) Schaublin 13 Milling Machine. With some rust and a lot of dirt it took me three days to get the machine clean and ready for the first test run.

Bart you should be proud of your self for rescuing such a fine machine. You can move in on to someone later who will appreciate it if space is a problem. Christopher from Down Under

Nice purchase! You should have seen mine when it came: so filthy! It was working in the last 49 years, owner(s) probably never cleaned inside it. Lube system was dry, and all those years of oil dripping (that’s meant to be like that, variable pulley for the speed selector works by pulling oil by gravity, speed variation also drips some) it looked like a Chinese restaurant chimney! I’m cleaning it for a month now, then only I’ll be able to switch motors wiring to use in 380v mains (previous owner had it at 220v). Mine came with the drilling head (don’t know if it’s the high speed one), two original Schaublin vises and a broken mortising attachment, missing the rear rotary/angular assembly. The original tooling is not beat up and my oil tank was cleaned already. Will try to post a video on mine and share with you.

Great find and the condition was not bad at all. Much better than the one Ca Lem just took apart. Love that vise! Low profile with large opening, what I've been looking for!

You did a good job restoring this mill. Whom ever had this before you had no clue how to maintain such a precision machine. The flood coolant and the broken mills is a good example of not knowing how to use this machine. Looks like it's in good usable condition now.

Thanks. And yes, it was really misused. It still needs some work and I will take it further apart. But for now it is running and in good hands.

The machine, it is a nice find for the ready to use. It does not look too bad you we hope can get it going again and start making some parts, we like you have a mill a Barker Mill in parts ready for reassembly but if something comes up we cannot wait either, thank you for sharing it with us. Good to see that there are more of us out there (nut cases, i mean). I bought my second Schaublin 22 just before summer. I however, has a perfectly good 22 that I use every day in the shop. I was contacted through a youtube comment, a guy who had one. He was not into machining, and was happy to get rid of it, and get payed. I will restore the last one to the best of my ability.

I was originally looking for this model but I had to "settle" with a model 51. Coolant tanks seem to have the habit to become really messy. I think Your's, however messy, was from the easy end as it is removable. Mine is integrated into the bottom of the pedestal and it was filled up to brim with metal porridge. These Schaublins are great machines. Persistence paid off for You :)

Bart hi posted in the reply below but not sure you get this flagged so hence the note here. If and only if you ever decide to sell on a Schaublin 13 then please let me know, I'm after one and have been looking for a while, in the UK they are rare sadly and as I have recently restored a Schaublin 135 lathe I wanted the mill to complete my dream machine workshop. Yes I could buy one from an dealer which has been fully restored but I want a machine that is used and not in showroom condition. Love to hear from you some time and keep up the fantastic videos. If you hear of a Schaublin 13 for sale in your community please let me know as this could also be a possibility ...

Thank you Gary. I'm from the Netherlands (near Groningen). I studied metalwork when I was young. My grandfather was a blacksmith and my dad also did metalwork / toolmaking at a University. I worked as a tool / instrument maker in a Dutch aerospace center for 6 years. At that time I did a lot of sports (martial arts) as a hobby and decided that I wanted to teach more. I stopt with all the metal work an studied Physical Education. Now I work at the Hanze University for PE, teaching the new teachers. I did do that fulltime but missed the metal work. Started Blacksmithing again and building my own shop. Two years ago I decided to combine the two. So know I work three days as a teacher and 2-3 days as a alround metalworker in my own workshop. Just rented a bigger place because I needed more room to work and take this more serious as a business. I also plan to do a more on YT so thanks for the compliments and stimulation. Greetings from the Netherlands, Bart

Hi Bart) I have also Schaublin 13 in my shop, now I have problem with one of conical gear in vertical milling head, some of teeth are litle bit damaged. Where do get the spare parts for Schaublin 13? I guess you faced with this problem, when you restored your machine. Please share your expirience.

Bart sorry to dig out an old post but I wanted to ask should you decide one day to sell one of your Schaublin 13's I would be interested to buy. I restored a Schaublin 135 lathe last year after three years hunting for one and now would like to complete my workshop with a Schaublin 13 mill. I love the engineering and build and whilst I know they are not ideal being expensive to source parts etc owning one would complete my mission. They are not popular here in the UK and are hard to find, I do not want a super restored machine from one of the German or Swiss machine dealers hence my reach out to you as your machines look 'honest' and whilst used still serviceable for many years. Great channel and hope to hear from you one day.

@@bartharkemametalworks2299 Hello Sir, This Old Tony has the same or similar Mill in his shop. His videos are hilarious. I'm sorry that you will have to spend a lot of money on tooling to replace what was destroyed. I looked up the electrical tools your Dad or you were using and couldn't believe how expensive they were. Maybe the costs in the Netherlands is high and believe me there are a lot of places here that jack the price of any and all things up. No such thing as a fair price any more or a hand shake to make a deal. I don't have a mill and I don't honestly know if I will be able to keep what I have. It all depends if I can get past the physical issues that I am dealing with. Your machine is looking great, it looks like you can tackle anything that comes in the door. Can't wait to see you put the SCHAUBLIN 13 through the paces. Good speaking with your Bart

@@paulgreenlee190 Yes I know about TOT his video's, there great. And yes, tools and machines are expensive (or to low quality). I don't buy cheap ones but can not affort new high quality ones. Most of my tools and machines are second hand. Better old quality then new with low quality. And the second hand tooling is also expensive if you need it in short time. But I'm patient and have been collecting the tools and machines over many years. Hope your health will be a little better in the future so you can do some machining again! Bart
